Our Mission- Luke 10:1-12- Rev. James Delanty on 20th Sept 2026

Why does God care about saving sinful people? As we prepare for Spring into Life, we step back from the practical question of inviting someone to church and ask a deeper one: Why does God care about mission in the first place? From Genesis to Jesus, the Bible tells the story of a God who seeks to restore His broken relationship with humanity. Jesus is sent to accomplish that mission through His death and resurrection, and then sends His disciples—including us—to announce the good news. In Luke 10, Jesus sends out 72 disciples and gives them a motivation, a warning, and the resources they need for the mission. Two thousand years later, that mission continues. So what does it mean for us? One person. Inviting one person. Regardless of the response. Join us as we explore God’s mission, the disciples’ mission, and our mission—and discover why when God’s heart captures ours, His mission becomes ours.

Taking up the Mantle- 2 Kings 2- Rev. James Delanty on 13th Spet 2026

Taking Up the Mantle — 2 Kings 2 What happens when a faithful servant of God comes to the end of his ministry? In 2 Kings 2, Elijah is taken up by God and his mantle falls to Elisha. The baton is passed, but the mission of God continues. In this sermon, we trace Elijah’s final journey, his dramatic departure, and Elisha’s call to take up the mantle. But the story points beyond Elijah and Elisha to Jesus—the greater Joshua, whose death, resurrection and ascension accomplish the great exodus of salvation. And when Jesus ascends, his mission is entrusted to his people. We have God’s Word, Christ’s gospel, the Holy Spirit and the mission. We don’t need a new plan—we need to faithfully carry on God’s Plan A. After 128 years of gospel ministry at St Alban’s, the question is the same for us: Will we take up the mantle? Will we faithfully carry the gospel forward for the generation that comes after us? Elijah went up. The mantle came down. The work continued. And so it will do so, until Christ returns.

No Plan B- 1 Kings 19- Rev. James Delanty on 6th Sept 2026

What do we do when life doesn’t go according to plan—and we begin to wonder whether God’s plan has failed? After the dramatic victory on Mount Carmel, Elijah finds himself exhausted, afraid and deeply disappointed. He wants answers from God. But God’s response is surprising. There is no new plan, no spectacular sign, and no secret revelation. Instead, God reminds Elijah that his purposes are still unfolding and sends him back onto the road. In this sermon from 1 Kings 19, we explore what it means to trust God when we are disappointed, confused or discouraged—and why we don’t need a Plan B when God has already revealed his ultimate plan in Jesus. He is enough.

Fire on the Mountain- 1 Kings 18- Rev. James Delanty on 30th August 2026

Can we really be certain about God? In 1 Kings 18, Elijah stands alone against 450 prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel and challenges Israel to stop wavering between two gods. As fire falls from heaven, the people are forced to decide: Who is truly God? But the story points beyond Elijah to Jesus. The fire that fell on the sacrifice becomes a picture of the cross, where Jesus becomes the sacrifice in our place. In a world that often treats certainty as arrogance, this sermon asks: Is there truth worth standing firmly upon? And where do you stand before God? “If the LORD is God, follow him.”

Elijah and the Widow- 1 Kings 17- Rev. James Delanty on 23rd August 2026

What happens to our faith when life falls apart? In 1 Kings 17, Elijah and an unlikely pagan widow face three impossible situations: the brook runs dry, the flour and oil run out, and the widow’s son dies. Yet through each crisis, God teaches them to trust Him—not simply because of what He can provide, but because of who He is. This sermon explores how God grows our faith when we reach the end of ourselves, why suffering doesn’t necessarily mean God has abandoned us, and how the resurrection of the widow’s son points forward to the greater resurrection of Jesus. When the rains come, don’t just look at the strength of your faith. Look at the faithfulness of your God.

Elijah Overview- 1 Kings 17- Rev. James Delanty on 16th Aug 2026

What happens when God’s people follow the wrong king? In 1 Kings 16, Israel’s leadership spirals further and further from God as Ahab takes the throne and leads the nation into idolatry. This sermon explores the danger of being shaped by the people and priorities around us, the idols that can quietly take God’s place in our lives, and the importance of choosing whom we will follow. But the story ultimately points us to a better King. Where Ahab used his influence to lead people away from God, Jesus uses His authority to bring sinners back to God—and gives His life to make that possible. Who is shaping your life? And who is really your King?
