Reclaim your Christmas: Navigating the festive season with Emetophobia

In this festive episode, Coaches Michelle Johnson and Joy Ferguson discuss specific strategies for managing emetophobia during Christmas gatherings. They emphasise the importance of understanding that emetophobia is not actually about sickness, but rather an interplay of limiting beliefs and thinking styles that can be tackled without exposure.  The conversation covers practical tips for setting boundaries, managing expectations, and focusing on positive experiences. The hosts encourage listeners to use their imagination to visualise a successful gathering, challenge catastrophic thoughts, and practice self-compassion. Ultimately, the episode aims to empower emetophobia sufferers to enjoy the festive season despite their fears. Takeaways: Social anxiety is a significant factor in emetophobia. Setting boundaries is crucial for managing emotions during gatherings. It's important to take the pressure off yourself during events. Focusing on positives can enhance your experience. Using your imagination powerfully prepares you for a successful gathering. Challenging catastrophic thoughts is essential for coping. Catching and praising yourself when creating anxiety is key. You have the right to take breaks during social events. You are enough; you don't have to prove anything. Hope for the most 'complex' cases of Emetophobia: Sophie's self-led journey to freedom

We have had lots of incredible guests on the Emetophobia-Free podcast but today's guest Sophie is truly exceptional.  Sophie's Emetophobia started at a young age and was so severe that she spent the full 7 years at CAMHS. Sophie's Emetophobia was so debilitating that she was unable to leave the room without the assistance of someone else and at one point she made an attempt to end her own life.  The professionals involved in her care held case study meetings about her as she was so 'complex and complicated'. When she was discharged at 19 she was told there was little to no help in adult services and her long term prognosis was poor... Despite being told this and armed with multiple diagnoses including Autism, ADHD, IBS, an eating disorder, severe OCD and depression, Sophie persevered in her mission to get herself over Emetophobia.  With consistent effort, dedication and focus, Sophie got herself over her fear using the Emetophobia-Free manual alone.  Sophie's story is absolutely invaluable to anyone going through the programme as she shares useful insights from her long journey through the programme.  With regards to her ASD, Sophie explains; "Its not about being like other people, its about celebrating me. If I was sick, I would cope with it... Being over emetophobia doesn't mean you ‘look the same as someone else’, its about being able to live the life you want to live. Emetophobia Has No Gender: Kane's Journey to Emetophobia-Free

Research suggests that the majority of Emetophobia sufferers are female but Kane's inspirational story shows that it can affect anyone. Kane developed emetophobia while serving in the royal navy in his 20’s and the phobia got progressively worse over the years.  In Kane’s words, his life with emetophobia was ‘bland’. He didn’t get excited, didn’t enjoy partaking in experiences and didn’t know who he had become. Kane avoided social events, created excuses and restricted his life to such an extent that he didn’t look forward to anything whatsoever. Kane discusses how covid worsened his phobia by allowing him to completely limit his experiences. The catastrophic thinking and high desire of control he was experiencing just increased his desire for control further. After hitting rock bottom, Kane realised he was experiencing emetophobia. After many talks with his wife, Kane found the Emetophobia-free programme and the rest is history! The breakthrough  Kane began listening to the Emetophobia-free podcast and was able to listen to real stories from real people! Suddenly, his questions began to make sense and Kane knew something had to change, and fast. During the programme, Kane learned about himself as well as the phobia. He improved his self esteem, confidence and what was ‘all consuming’ anxiety. Kane recognised the importance of completing the actions to prove his own power despite this initially feeling quite overwhelming. In his own words, Kane trusted the process and completely changed his life. In Phillipa’s words, Kane knew what he wanted to fix, and just did it! He applied himself, took responsibility and trusted the process. He understood that he was creating the phobia, and despite it not being his fault, knew it was his responsibility to overcome it In Kane’s words ‘since grabbing the programme by the horns, I’ve never looked back’ Life after Emetophobia Since completing the programme, Kane is confident, resilient and completely over his emetophobia. Who knows what the future has in store but we couldn't be happier for him! Why Chronic Illness Won’t Stop You from Overcoming Emetophobia

We receive many emails from people who are suffering from Emetophobia alongside a diagnosed medical condition (IBS, Crohn's disease, POTs, Celiac disease to name but a few). Many are concerned that their diagnosis will stop them from overcoming the Emetophobia and so are reluctant to engage in the programme.  In today's episode, Sam Marker and Michelle dive into why a medical condition is not a barrier to you overcoming Emetophobia and how the programme will ultimately help you to manage the symptoms of your condition.  Sam herself is diagnosed with a nervous system disorder that shares some of the symptoms of Emetophobia. By going through the programme, Sam was not only able to completely overcome her Emetophobia but is now able to confidently manage the physical symptoms of her disorder.  Before the programme, Sam was unable to differentiate which physical symptom was Emetophobia/anxiety induced and which was a medical condition but since overcoming her phobia she has gained true clarity.  Sam discusses the nervous system condition which affects all parts of her body; her temperature, heart rate, digestive system, limbs and various other areas. When experiencing emetophobia panic attacks, Sam would struggle to regulate any part of her body and assumed all of her symptoms were caused by her anxiety. Since overcoming her fear, Sam can comfortably navigate her physical symptoms in a resilient and powerful way. Sam highlights her thought processes pre-programme, and how she felt completely catastrophic, helpless and black and white. Since learning what tends to induce her physical symptoms, she is able to prepare appropriately and give her body what it needs rather than allow her thinking to spiral. The way Sam processes her physical symptoms has become empowering and proactive and she now fully understands the importance of solid mental health on her ability to manage any medical diagnosis effectively and powerfully.  Michelle and Sam discuss the fact that despite a medical diagnosis, the Emetophobia-free programme will enable you to effectively manage your thinking which in turn, enables you to manage your physical symptoms! Why Thriving Parents Are Key to Helping Kids Beat Emetophobia

Coach Chloe joins Michelle Johnson on this week's episode to discuss her tumultuous journey through the programme with her daughter Ava who was suffering with Emetophobia. Despite supporting Ava as best she could through the programme, Chloe was struggling to see the progress in Ava. It was only once Chloe turned the spotlight inwards did she discover the barriers that were preventing herself and therefore Ava from thriving and overcoming Ava's phobia.  Ava was 11 when she finally began the Emetophobia-free programme. Sadly her motivation, engagement and belief in the programme had been impacted by her previous therapies such as exposure therapy, which had increased her fear about anything working for her. She has created and maintained the belief that she was the 1 person this wouldn’t work for.  Despite Chloe believing she was coping well at the time of supporting Ava through the programme ,she now recognises that her personal attitude was not ‘thriving’, which was having a direct impact on Ava’s progress (little to her knowledge at the time!).  Once Chloe recognised her own lack of self-belief, she understood that despite being 100% committed to Ava’s learning, she was completely neglecting her own thoughts, coping skills, and attitude. Because of this, Ava was struggling to see the benefits. Chloe was encouraging her daughter, whilst being completely catastrophic inside. Chloe was putting in maximum effort to encourage Ava to partake in school trips, plays and school activities despite the Emetophobia holding her back. Despite this being successful in some areas, Chloe wasn’t able to process these wins in positive way which was preventing Ava from doing the same The second Chloe began to Thrive herself, there was a complete breakthrough for both herself and Ava! Chloe now recognises her own worth, prioritises her own needs and has found a whole new level of respect for herself and her daughter Ava is thriving and loving life Emetophobia-Free! Chloe’s top tips: Parents, address your own social anxiety! Recognise your hypervigilance! Recognise blips as a positive learning opportunity!Spot your catastrophic language!Find out more: https://www.emetophobiafree.org https://linktr.ee/emetophobia Connect with us at the links below: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/emetophobiafree/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/emetophobiafree TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@UCF6vCMhoF98TKKe7DKBlfgw Thanks for watching :) ------------------------ Emetophobia is the fear of vomiting/sickness: either yourself, other people, or both.
