If I Could Talk to the Woman I Was Then

If I Could Talk to the Woman I Was Then Show Notes What would you say to the version of yourself who was just trying to survive? In this deeply personal episode of Rooted Resilience, Wendy reflects on the woman she was eight years ago when life felt like it was crumbling around her—and the small, intentional choices that eventually became the foundation for the life she's building today. There wasn't one giant breakthrough. There wasn't a morning when everything suddenly became easy. Instead, there were small routines: prayer, gratitude, movement, paying attention to her thoughts, focusing on what she could control, and getting up the next day to do it again. Those practices eventually became the foundation of the Rooted Journal, created first because Wendy needed something simple and realistic to help herself move forward—not because she ever imagined she'd publish it for anyone else. Pasted markdown In this episode, Wendy talks candidly about resilience, grief, mindset, routines, personal growth, and why acknowledging that things aren't okay can coexist with gratitude and hope. You'll hear about: - Why resilience isn't about avoiding pain—it's learning that you can move through hard things. - How small routines can become anchors when the bigger circumstances of life are outside your control. - Why personal growth doesn't need an elaborate 4:30 a.m. morning routine to work. - The difference between positive thinking and denying reality. - How repeated small choices build trust with yourself over time. - Why you don't have to reach the destination before you're allowed to acknowledge your transformation. - The story behind the Rooted Journal and why Wendy created it in the first place. - A powerful question to ask yourself: If you could sit across the table from the version of yourself who was struggling, what would you tell her today? A thought to take with you Don't become so focused on the distance between where you are and where you're going that you forget to turn around and see how far you've already walked. And if you're in a season where you don't know where to start, don't try to change your entire life tomorrow. Start with tomorrow morning. One thought. One thing you're grateful for. One thing you can control. One thing your body needs. One goal. One promise to yourself that you're actually going to keep. Then get up tomorrow and do it again. Stay rooted. Stay wild. Stay well. Keep going.

Why does it take us so long to finally stop worrying about what everybody else thinks?

Why does it take us so long to finally stop worrying about what everybody else thinks? Maybe the goal isn't to stop caring at all. Maybe it's learning **who actually gets a vote in your life.** In this episode of *Rooted Resilience*, we're talking about why approval and belonging matter so much to us, how other people's expectations can slowly turn into self-abandonment, and why life experience often changes the way we think about being liked, accepted, and understood. I'm sharing some of my own journey—from growing up knowing that simply hearing “I'm disappointed in you” could crush me, to learning that I don't have to suppress parts of myself to make other people comfortable. We talk about boundaries, over-explaining, criticism, authenticity, faith, and what happens when you finally realize that peace feels better than constantly trying to prove yourself. Because here's the truth: **An expectation is not automatically an obligation.** **You can be misunderstood and still know who you are.** **You can love people without being controlled by their opinions.** **And not everybody gets a vote.** In this episode, we talk about: * Why humans naturally seek approval and belonging * The difference between social awareness and self-abandonment * How we collect other people's “shoulds” * Why over-explaining yourself is exhausting * What happens when you begin setting boundaries * How to receive criticism without automatically accepting or rejecting it * Why knowing your values makes decisions clearer * Choosing peace over approval * Faith, identity, and Galatians 1:10 * Learning to live your one life without constantly auditioning for other people's approval ### Questions to sit with Where in your life are you still asking for permission? Whose opinion has more power over you than it probably should? What are you doing—or not doing—because you're afraid of what somebody might think? **What is your need for approval costing you?** Maybe the goal isn't getting to a place where you don't care what anybody thinks. Maybe it's getting to a place where you know yourself, know your values, know your God, and understand that **not everybody gets a vote.** 🌿 **Rooted Journal:** If you're in a season of reconnecting with yourself, reflecting on your values, and figuring out what you actually want your life to look like, you can find the Rooted Journal through the links in my social media or at Willow & Oak Resilient Wellness. Until next time, stay rooted, stay resilient, and protect the peace you worked so hard to find.

    Embracing Seasons of Resilience

    # When One Season Ends and Another Begins As summer begins to wind down and a new school year approaches, life naturally shifts into a new rhythm. Whether you're packing backpacks, starting a new job, stepping into a season of change, or simply wondering what's next, this episode is for you. In this heartfelt conversation, Wendy shares how an unexpected week of illness became a reminder that we don't always get to choose the pace of life—but we can choose how we walk through the seasons we're given. Drawing from more than 20 years as a school psychologist, she explores why transitions can feel overwhelming, even when they're exciting, and how understanding our minds can help us navigate change with greater grace. Together, we'll talk about: * Why life is made up of seasons—not just on the calendar, but in our hearts. * The psychology behind why transitions create stress. * Finding peace in the "messy middle" instead of rushing to the next destination. * How gratitude can help us close one season before stepping into another. * Three powerful questions to help you prepare for what's ahead. Wendy also announces that **guest spots are now open** for the Rooted Resilience Podcast! If you have a story of resilience, faith, healing, parenting, entrepreneurship, or personal growth that could encourage others, she'd love to hear from you. No matter what season you're entering, remember this: Seasons change. God's faithfulness doesn't. ### Reflection Questions * What am I grateful for from the season that's ending? * What do I need to leave behind? * Who do I want to become in this next season? Finding Your Backroad

    # Episode 17: Finding Your Backroad Sometimes the road that takes a little longer is the one that finally brings you home. In this deeply personal episode of *Rooted Resilience*, Wendy shares how losing her brother, unexpectedly losing her job, and ultimately coming back home changed her life in ways she never saw coming. What first felt like heartbreak and detours became God's way of bringing her back to herself—to familiar faces, quiet backroads, Friday night football, family, and the kind of healing that only comes when we slow down long enough to remember who we are. If you've ever felt like life has become one long interstate of deadlines, responsibilities, and constant hustle, this episode is an invitation to take the scenic route. Together, we'll explore why peace isn't found by moving faster but by living with greater purpose. In this episode, we'll talk about: • Why grief has a way of making us crave our roots • The unexpected healing that comes from coming home • What losing a loved one and a career taught me about God's timing • Why our identity is so much more than our job titles • How slowing down helps us reconnect with what truly matters • Practical ways to find your own "backroad" in everyday life **Favorite Quote:** *"Sometimes the road that takes a little longer... is the one that finally brings you home."* If this episode encouraged you, I'd love to hear from you. Mindset and Mindfulness

    # Rooted Resilience Podcast ## Episode: Why Mindset Matters: What Are You Feeding Your Mind? Our mindset isn't about pretending life is perfect or forcing ourselves to "just think positive." It's the lens through which we experience the world. It shapes how we respond to stress, interpret challenges, build relationships, and make decisions every day. In this episode, Wendy shares a simple lesson inspired by a day at the beach: peace often comes after the work. Just as carrying chairs, coolers, and beach gear comes before enjoying the waves, healing, growth, and confidence require intentional effort. You'll also learn: * Why your mindset influences every area of your life * How our brain's negativity bias can keep us focused on fear * Why protecting your mind isn't avoiding reality—it's choosing what deserves your attention * The importance of the "tables" you sit at and the people who influence your thinking * How surrounding yourself with encouraging, growth-minded people can change your future * Why motivation usually follows action, not the other way around * Practical ways to renew your mind and create lasting change ### Key Scripture **Romans 12:2** "Be transformed by the renewing of your mind..." ### This Week's Challenge Take inventory of what you're feeding your mind. Ask yourself: * What am I watching? * What am I listening to? * What conversations am I participating in? * Who am I allowing to influence my thinking? Choose one small change this week: * Turn off the news for a day. * Spend five minutes in prayer or devotion. * Put your phone away after dinner. * Sit outside and enjoy God's creation. * Spend time with people who encourage and challenge you to grow. Remember: Whatever you feed will grow. If you feed fear, fear grows. If you feed comparison, comparison grows. If you feed gratitude, faith, hope, and truth, those things begin to grow as well. ### Connect with Willow & Oak Resilient Wellness 🌿 Website: [www.willowandoakresilientwellness.com](http://www.willowandoakresilientwellness.com) 📧 Email: [wendy@willowandoakresilientwellness.com](mailto:wendy@willowandoakresilientwellness.com) Don't forget to subscribe, leave a review, and share this episode with someone who needs the reminder that lasting transformation begins by renewing the mind. Joy, Peace and Rooted Resilience

    # Episode Show Notes ## You Asked for Joy, Happiness, and Peace... But Are Your Choices Supporting Them? Have you ever prayed for joy, happiness, or peace and then wondered why you still didn't have it? In this episode of the Rooted Resilience Podcast, Wendy shares a deeply personal reflection on what she's learned through one of the most challenging seasons of her life. After losing her brother to brain cancer, losing her grandmother, being laid off from her corporate job, navigating family challenges, and facing uncertainty about the future, Wendy found herself experiencing something unexpected: more peace than ever before. This episode explores the differences between happiness, joy, and peace, why they are not the same thing, and how our daily choices can either support or sabotage the very things we're asking God to give us. Through honest storytelling and practical reflection, Wendy discusses how surrendering control, setting healthy boundaries, letting go of toxic relationships, prioritizing gratitude, and trusting God's timing transformed her perspective and helped her discover a deeper sense of peace. ## In This Episode We Discuss: * The difference between happiness, joy, and peace * Why happiness is often tied to circumstances * How joy can exist even during difficult seasons * What true peace actually looks like * The loss of Wendy's brother, grandmother, and corporate career * How God provided opportunities before they were needed * Letting go of control and surrendering what isn't yours to carry * The impact of boundaries on emotional well-being * Why comparison steals joy * How negative content affects your mindset * The importance of forgiveness and releasing old hurts * Walking away from toxic relationships and environments * The connection between gratitude and peace * Why peace doesn't eliminate ambition—it reduces anxiety ## Key Takeaways * Peace is not the absence of problems; it is confidence that you'll make it through them. * Joy is deeper than happiness and can exist even when circumstances are difficult. * Comparison is one of the quickest ways to rob yourself of joy. * Healthy boundaries create space for peace. * God is often working behind the scenes long before we recognize it. * Sometimes the greatest source of peace comes from releasing what was never ours to control. ## Reflection Questions * What am I praying for right now? * What choices am I making each day? * Do my daily choices align with what I'm asking God to do in my life? * Am I creating space for joy? * Am I protecting my peace? * Am I consuming peace or consuming chaos? ## Resources Mentioned * The Rooted Journal * Willow & Oak Resilient Wellness * Rooted Resilience Podcast * Podcast+ ## Connect with Wendy Website: Willow & Oak Resilient Wellness Follow along for more conversations on resilience, faith, mindset, personal growth, and creating a life that feels rooted, peaceful, and aligned with your values. Who is leading your home?

    # Who Is Leading Your Household? ### Rooted Resilience Podcast with Wendy Golden In this episode of Rooted Resilience, Wendy explores what leadership really looks like inside our homes. Leadership isn't about titles, power, or being the loudest voice in the room—it's about influence, character, and the example we set every day. Through personal stories, reflections on marriage, parenting, faith, and self-awareness, Wendy challenges listeners to consider a powerful question: **What is it like to live on the other side of me?** Whether you're a spouse, parent, caregiver, leader, or simply someone striving to grow, this episode invites you to examine the culture you're creating within your home and relationships. ### In This Episode: * The difference between leadership and control * Why humility is a strength, not a weakness * How pride can damage relationships * The influence parents have on their children * Lessons learned through marriage, growth, and faith * The importance of self-awareness in healthy relationships * Why leadership begins with how we treat those closest to us * What it means to lead through service, compassion, and love ### Key Takeaway: Every household is being led by something. Is your home being led by peace or fear? Grace or criticism? Humility or pride? Faith or frustration? The culture of a home is built one conversation, one choice, and one act of leadership at a time. ### Reflection Questions: * What is it like to live on the other side of me? * What is it like to be loved by me? * What is it like to work with me? * What is it like to be my spouse or my child? * If someone walked into my home today, what would they say is leading it? ### Scripture Reflection: "Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant." — Mark 10:43 ### Connect with Willow & Oak Resilient Wellness: Website: willowandoakresilientwellness.com Email: [wendy@willowandoakresilientwellness.com](mailto:wendy@willowandoakresilientwellness.com) ### Enjoying the Podcast?
