🎙️ Episode 145: The Power of Sleep

I just got back from a 10-day trip where my sleep was TERRIBLE. And even though I was still eating plenty… my body felt absolutely wrecked. * My recovery sucked. * My energy was low. * My digestion was off. * My body felt tight and sore. * My workouts felt harder. It was one of those experiences that reminded me just how much sleep affects literally everything. Because sleep isn’t just about whether you feel tired the next day. In this episode, I break down: * How poor sleep affects training, performance, and recovery * How sleep impacts when you’re body composition * Why keeping a consistent sleep/wake schedule can make such a big difference * The 3-2-1 sleep rule * How your bedroom temperature can impact sleep quality One of the biggest things my trip reminded me of is that you can be doing a LOT of things “right” with your nutrition and training… But if your sleep sucks, eventually you’re going to feel it. You don’t need another biohack before you’ve mastered the basics. Don’t sleep on sleep. 😴 🙌🏻 Let’s Connect 📱 Instagram: @fit.habit.emma🌐 Website: www.fithabit.club🎧 Don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast so you never miss an episode! 🎙️ Episode 144: Menopause Isn’t a Metabolic Death Sentence

A lot of women believe that once menopause hits, their metabolism suddenly breaks and fat loss becomes impossible. But that isn’t the full story. Menopause comes with very real hormonal changes that can affect your sleep, energy, stress resilience, cravings, ability to maintain muscle, and where your body tends to store fat. But your metabolism isn’t broken, and you are not doomed. Often, menopause happens alongside years of putting everyone else first, moving less, losing muscle, sleeping poorly, eating inconsistently, and dealing with major life stress. Those factors can create a cascade that makes your body feel completely different. In this episode, I break down: * Why maintaining and building muscle becomes even more important * How hormonal changes and poor sleep can influence cravings, recovery, and energy * Why daily movement and strength training matter more than extreme cardio * How nutrition awareness can help you regain control without following another restrictive diet * Why stress management and setting boundaries are part of improving your body composition * Why you probably don’t need the expensive “menopause metabolism” supplement stack being marketed to you * Where hormone replacement therapy may fit into the conversation with a qualified provider Menopause may mean your body needs more support, intention, and consistency than it did before. But it does not mean you can’t lose fat, build muscle, improve your energy, or feel confident in your body again. You have far more control than the wellness industry wants you to believe. 🙌🏻 Let’s Connect 📱 Instagram: @fit.habit.emma🌐 Website: www.fithabit.club🎧 Don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast so you never miss an episode! 🎙️ Episode 143: You’re Not Overtraining, You’re Under-Recovering

You probably don’t need to stop exercising. You may just need to start recovering from it. When I was a Division I athlete, I trained for more than four hours a day, walked 15,000+ steps, and still recovered well enough to do it again the next day. But training, eating, sleeping, and going to school were essentially my only responsibilities. Most adults are trying to train while also managing demanding jobs, kids, relationships, poor sleep, chronic stress, and years of under-fueling. The problem isn’t always that you’re doing too much. It’s that you’re asking your body to perform without giving it what it needs to adapt. In this episode, I break down: * The difference between overtraining and under-recovering * Why sleep can influence your cravings, performance, body composition, and risk of injury * Why eating more especially more carbohydrates may help you train and recover better * How work, relationships, health, and emotional stress affect your training capacity * Why adding more exercise while cutting more food can become counterproductive * Why muscle isn’t built during your workout—it’s built while you recover from it Recovery isn’t something you earn after working hard enough. Recovery is part of the plan. Before adding another workout, cutting more calories, or assuming your body is failing you, ask yourself: Am I actually giving my body enough fuel, sleep, and support to recover? 🙌🏻 Let’s Connect 📱 Instagram: @fit.habit.emma🌐 Website: www.fithabit.club🎧 Don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast so you never miss an episode! 🎙️ Episode 142: You Can’t Biohack Your Way Out of Bad Habits

Cold plunges. Red light therapy. Peptides. NAD IVs. Weighted vests. Expensive supplements. Fancy functional testing. The health and fitness industry is constantly convincing people that the next biohack will finally fix their energy, body composition, hormones, gut health, or performance. But here’s the problem: You can’t biohack your way out of consistently ignoring the basics. A cold plunge won’t replace quality sleep. A supplement won’t compensate for barely eating throughout the day. Red light therapy won’t build the muscle you’re avoiding lifting weights to build. And peptides won’t magically undo chronic stress, excessive alcohol, poor nutrition, or a sedentary lifestyle. In this episode, I break down: * Why biohacks only provide meaningful benefits when your foundation is already strong * The health basics that will move the needle more than any supplement or trendy protocol * Why people waste money trying to optimize the final 5% while ignoring the first 95% * When functional testing and advanced interventions may actually be worthwhile * The questions you should ask before following health advice online * Why what works for an advanced athlete or fitness professional may not make sense for you This doesn’t mean every biohack is useless. It means you need to earn the right to optimize the small things by consistently doing the big things first. Sleep. Eat enough nutrient-dense food. Strength train. Walk. Hydrate. Manage your stress. Pay attention to how much you’re actually eating. Then, if you’re still struggling, it may be time to dig deeper. 🙌🏻 Let’s Connect 📱 Instagram: @fit.habit.emma🌐 Website: www.fithabit.club🎧 Don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast so you never miss an episode! 🎙️ Episode 141: From Couch to Ragnar - How I’m Training for a 48-Hour Trail Race in 5 Weeks

Last week, a friend asked me to join a “fun group trail race.” Naturally, I said yes. What I didn’t realize was that I had signed up for a 48-hour Ragnar relay where I’ll be running roughly 17 miles across three different trail loops with elevation and uneven terrain. Oh, and the race was only five weeks away. The slightly concerning part? I’m not a runner 🙃 I’ve only recently started running again after years of associating it with burning calories, losing weight and punishing myself for eating too much. This time, my mindset is completely different. I’m not training for this race to change how my body looks. I’m doing it to see what my body is capable of and to learn whether I can continue getting stronger while also building the endurance needed to survive 17 trail miles. In this episode, I break down: * How I’m gradually increasing my running mileage without overloading my joints * Why trail runs and hikes are a major part of my preparation * How I’m continuing to lift four days per week * Why I’m increasing my calories and carbohydrates instead of eating less * How I’m practicing different fueling strategies before race day * Why recovery is just as important as the training itself * How my relationship with running has shifted from punishment to performance This past week, I ran three times, lifted four times and completed a nine-mile hike. But I didn’t try to “earn” my food. I ate more because I asked more of my body. The goal isn’t to do the most exercise possible. The goal is to train hard, fuel adequately, recover well and arrive at the starting line healthy enough to enjoy the experience. Will everything go perfectly? Probably not 😂 But I’m excited to see what my body can do. 🎯 Have a performance goal and need help properly fueling your body, optimizing your training and recovering from it? 🙌🏻 Let’s Connect 📱 Instagram: @fit.habit.emma🌐 Website: www.fithabit.club🎧 Don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast so you never miss an episode! 🎙️ Episode 140: How to Fuel Your Body for Hikes, Runs & Endurance Events

If you’re asking your body to run, climb, hike, or race for hours, you can’t fuel it like you’re spending the day sitting at a desk. In this episode, my friend and fellow coach Laura Savino joins me to talk about what it actually takes to fuel challenging activities properly. Laura recently completed the 22-mile Presidential Traverse in New Hampshire and is preparing to hike the Tour du Mont Blanc. Meanwhile, I somehow signed myself up for a Ragnar trail race with only five weeks to prepare. 😅 So naturally, I asked her to help me create a fueling strategy. In this episode, we break down: * Why trail runs and hikes should be fueled based on time and intensity—not mileage alone * How many carbohydrates you may need during longer activities * Gels, liquid carbohydrates, hydration and electrolytes * Why you need to practice your fueling strategy before race day * How to train your gut to tolerate carbohydrates while exercising * Why waiting until you feel hungry can put you in a hole you might not be able to climb out of * Why you may need to continue eating more carbohydrates after the event to properly recover * The biggest mistakes people make when preparing for hikes, races and endurance challenges We also talk about the fear many women have around eating carbohydrates, even while asking their bodies to perform at a high level. Eating carbs during a hard run isn’t going to suddenly make you gain body fat. Your body is going to use that fuel to perform, recover and prepare for whatever you’re asking it to do next. The biggest takeaway? If your gut can tolerate it, slightly overfueling a demanding activity is usually much better than underfueling it. 🎯 Planning a hike, race or endurance challenge and unsure how to fuel for it? 🎙️ Episode 139: The Biggest Red Flags to Watch Out for when Starting HRT

Hormone replacement therapy can be life-changing when it’s prescribed and monitored appropriately. But the wrong provider can leave you with extreme hormone levels, worsening symptoms, and an ever-growing list of medications and supplements without ever asking why you’re struggling in the first place. I recorded this episode after working with a woman whose testosterone had reached 1,200 while under the care of an online hormone clinic. For context, that wasn’t just slightly elevated. It was a massive red flag and her concerns weren’t being taken seriously. In this episode, I break down: 🚩 The biggest red flags I see with HRT clinics and med spas🚩 Why “let’s increase your dose” shouldn’t be the automatic answer🚩 Why your provider should ask about your sleep, stress, digestion, nutrition, and training🚩 Why treating lab numbers without looking at the whole person can create more problems🚩 The difference between supporting your hormones and simply prescribing more hormones🚩 When lifestyle changes may help—and when you need support from a qualified medical provider HRT itself isn’t the enemy. But it also shouldn’t be treated like a one-size-fits-all shortcut for low energy, stubborn weight gain, poor sleep, or every symptom associated with aging. You deserve a provider who listens to your concerns, monitors your response, considers your entire health history, and adjusts your treatment responsibly. ⚠️ This episode is for educational purposes only and does not replace individualized medical care. Never start, stop, or change a hormone medication without speaking with the qualified provider who prescribes it. 🎯 Struggling with low energy, poor digestion, inflammation, or stubborn fat loss despite feeling like you’re doing everything right? 🎙️ Episode 138: Is Your Body Overburdened? The Hidden Stressors Blocking Your Progress

I started a mold protocol a little over a week ago, and this week, my energy completely crashed. Not “I could use another cup of coffee” tired. I’m talking about struggling to stand, talk, train, or do basic things that normally require very little effort from me. And it made me realize that my body had probably been trying to communicate with me for a long time. The lower energy. The irregular cycles. The lack of sweating, even during hard workouts and sauna sessions. The skin rashes and histamine reactions. The digestive changes. Individually, these symptoms may not seem connected. But sometimes they’re signs that your body is under more stress than it can currently handle. In this episode, I break down: * Why extreme fatigue can occur when your body is already overburdened * The subtle symptoms I experienced during a year of mold exposure * How skin reactions, cycle changes, poor digestion, and low energy can be signals, not random inconveniences * Why treating the symptom doesn’t always address the underlying problem * The foundational habits you should assess before assuming you have mold exposure, a stealth infection, or another deeper health issue ⚠️ Having these symptoms does not automatically mean you have mold, parasites, Lyme disease, or another hidden infections. If you’re sleeping poorly, undereating, overtraining, barely moving, dehydrated, or chronically stressed, start by addressing those basics. But if your habits are genuinely dialed in and you still feel like something is seriously wrong, it may be time to stop dismissing your symptoms and investigate further. Your body communicates through symptoms. The goal isn’t to become afraid of every symptom, it’s to start paying attention when your body is repeatedly asking for help. 🎯 Feeling like you’re doing everything “right,” but your body still isn’t responding?
