What I Wish I Knew at 18: You Don't Have to Have It All Figured Out

If you could sit down with your 18-year-old self on the day you graduated high school, what would you tell them? Not about grades or test scores—but about life. In the first episode of our new series, “What I Wish I Knew at 18,” we look back on the lessons we learned through careers, relationships, successes, failures, and eventually becoming parents ourselves. We start with a message every graduating senior needs to hear: You don't have to have your entire life figured out yet. We talk about the pressure young adults feel to choose the “right” career, college, or path before they've had enough life experience to even know what they want—and why changing direction isn't failure. We also explore a few lessons we wish we'd understood sooner: How you treat people matters. Your character, reputation, kindness, and ability to build relationships will follow you much further than you realize.Education doesn't have one path. A traditional four-year degree can be incredibly valuable—but so can trade schools, certifications, community college, entrepreneurship, apprenticeships, military service, and learning on the job. It's okay not to know yet. You don't need a perfect 20-year plan. You need enough courage to choose a direction, start moving, learn, and adjust along the way.Graduation can feel like you're supposed to have all the answers. You aren't. At 18, your job isn't to have your entire life mapped out. It's to start becoming the person who will be ready for wherever that life takes you.

The Lost Art of Civil Disagreement: Lessons from America's Founding Fathers

Disagreement has always existed. Division doesn't have to. In this episode, we explore one of the defining principles of a free society: the ability to hold deeply different beliefs while still respecting the inherent dignity and rights of one another. Drawing inspiration from the Declaration of Independence and the lives of America's Founding Fathers, we examine how Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and Alexander Hamilton approached disagreement, persuasion, and public discourse. Their debates were often passionate. Sometimes deeply personal. Yet they also understood that a republic depends on people who can argue vigorously without abandoning the shared commitment to liberty and human dignity. We discuss: Why Benjamin Franklin intentionally changed the way he communicated to become more persuasiveHow John Adams' certainty sometimes strained important relationshipsThe difference between tolerance, respect, and genuine acceptance of another person's humanityWhy disagreement is inevitable—but contempt is optionalHow leaders create environments where ideas can be challenged without diminishing the worth of the people expressing themWhether you're leading an organization, raising a family, or simply trying to navigate today's increasingly polarized world, this conversation offers timeless lessons on humility, empathy, conviction, and the courage to listen. Because perhaps the strength of a society is not measured by how often its people agree... ...but by how well they treat one another when they don't.
