    In 2010, Dr. Sandrine Galliard-Kenney and Dr. Brianna Kent attended a day-long human trafficking seminar and noticed that not one healthcare professional had been included on any panel. They left thinking their field had more to contribute. In Season 3 of Behind the Scenes: How Faculty Bring Learning to Life at NSU, the focus is community in action and how NSU faculty serve, partner, and make an impact. Dr. Marti Snyder talks with Dr. Galliard-Kenney and Dr. Kent about CREATE, the Coalition for Research and Education Against Trafficking and Exploitation, now in its 16th year of connecting survivors with free clinical services across NSU's health colleges. They discuss how photovoice research gave survivors control over how their experiences were documented and shared, how trafficking awareness has been built into health curricula from the undergraduate through doctoral level, and what this work has changed in them personally.     S3 Ep 6 - Behind the Scenes: Community in Action - Tiny Tots, Big Impact: Building Community and Parental Confidence in the NICU

    Leaving the NICU is supposed to be good news. For many families, it is also one of the most disorienting moments of their lives, arriving home with a medically complex infant and a discharge plan that cannot fully prepare them for what comes next. Dr. Raquel Garcia saw that moment clearly and decided to do something about it. In Season 3 of Behind the Scenes: How Faculty Bring Learning to Life at NSU, the focus is on community in action and how NSU faculty serve, partner, and make an impact. Host Dr. Marti Snyder speaks with Dr. Raquel Garcia, Clinical Supervisor and Assistant Professor of Speech Language Pathology in the Dr. Pallavi Patel College of Health Care Sciences, about the Tiny Tots Transition to Home program, a faculty-led initiative she co-founded with neonatologist Dr. Daphna Barbeau. Together they discuss how the program grew from a single conversation over coffee into a four-year initiative offering NICU families education sessions, peer connection, nutrition support, and developmental resources before discharge. Dr. Garcia reflects on the unexpected power of peer-to-peer support among parents, the interprofessional learning opportunities the program creates for NSU students across health sciences, law, and beyond, and what this work has fundamentally changed in her own clinical perspective.     Most students are told to think globally and act locally. Far fewer are given a real structure for doing it. The Razor's Edge Global Scholars Program builds that structure, moving students from a genuine community need to a fully realized project, and asking them to reflect on what changed along the way. In Season 3 of Behind the Scenes: How Faculty Bring Learning to Life at NSU, the focus is Community in Action: How NSU Faculty Serve, Partner, and Make an Impact. Host Dr. Marti Snyder talks with Dr. Barbara Packer and Dr. Drew Wofford about the Hochberg-Miniaci Razor's Edge Global Scholars Program, a highly selective scholarship that leads to a minor in global engagement.     When Dr. Terry Morrow Nelson agreed in 2012 to pull together a team for an American Diabetes Association walk on NSU's campus, she had one thought leaving that event: a university with this many health professions programs and this many students hungry for real-world experience could do far more than fundraise. The Interprofessional Diabetes Education and Awareness (IDEA) Initiative was born from that question, and it has been running, growing, and evolving ever since. In Season 3 of Behind the Scenes: How Faculty Bring Learning to Life at NSU, the focus is on Community in Action: How NSU Faculty Serve, Partner, and Make an Impact. Host Dr. Marti Snyder is joined by Dr. Morrow Nelson, a professor of Health Sciences at the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine, to explore how the IDEA Initiative has grown into a year-round program involving 15 health professions, 10 interprofessional teams, and 70 to 80 students annually. They discuss what students gain by moving from simulation to real community settings, how a strengths-based leadership model shapes the work, and what it takes to build community partnerships that last.     What does it take to help a high school girl see herself as a future scientist, engineer, or neurosurgeon? According to Dr. Angie Su and Dr. Jia Borror, it starts with recognizing that the gap between these students and STEM careers has never been about talent.     In this episode of Behind the Scenes: How Faculty Bring Learning to Life at NSU, Dr. Marti Snyder sits down with Dr. Stephen Bronsburg, Associate Professor and Director of the Health Informatics programs in the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Bronsburg discusses leading both the bachelor’s and master’s programs while supporting accreditation, mentoring students, and collaborating with national partners on research focused on artificial intelligence policy in health informatics education. He shares insights into what faculty should understand about academic leadership, the evolving role of AI in the field, and the value of experiential learning. The conversation also explores his work building a regional mentor–mentee network through the South Florida chapter of the Health Information Management and Systems Society, as well as his contributions to developing digital medical record systems used during international medical outreach trips. Faculty listeners will gain practical guidance on balancing responsibilities, supporting students in using AI responsibly, and exploring leadership opportunities with confidence.
