Welcome to Episode 97 of Laser Insights China! This episode of Laser Insights China focuses on a CO2-to-fiber retrofit project in North Carolina. The customer owned an AMADA LC3015F1NT 4kW CO2 laser cutter whose frame, bed, linear motors, drives, rigidity, and motion system were still in excellent condition. Instead of replacing the whole machine, the project kept the valuable mechanical platform and upgraded the cutting system to 12kW fiber laser power. Key points: l The main problem was the aging CO2 laser system: slower cutting, heavier optical-path maintenance, less stable piercing, and higher operating cost. l The retrofit removed the CO2 optical path and integrated a 12kW fiber laser platform, cutting head, cooling system, assist gas, electrical interfaces, height following, and safety logic. l The project took about 5 days for retrofit work, 3 days for commissioning, and 1 day for operator training. l Trial cutting covered stainless steel from 2 to 8 mm and carbon steel from 4 to 25 mm, showing faster cutting, more stable piercing, cleaner sections, and reduced slag. l The key technical challenges included the closed original control system, Z-axis and cutting head adaptation, capacitive height following, signal interference, shielded cable routing, and alarm integration. The larger message is that a retrofit is not a simple component swap. It works best when the machine structure and motion system are still strong, and when the customer can provide the model, year, CO2 power, material range, thickness range, maintenance issues, machine photos, cutting head photos, and electrical cabinet photos for evaluation.
