Series: Holy Week 2026 Scripture: Matthew 21:1-11 Pastor Caleb King ABOUT THIS MESSAGE: Hail the King who humbly comes to save us! For 1700 years the church has celebrated this festival opening Holy Week with hosannas and palm branches. The time for Christ’s glory has come. But he will not gain his glory in the manner of other kings. Rather, he would humble himself in great acts of love for us to save us. His choice of a donkey to enter Jerusalem was humble, but his actions were not. With his actions, he proclaimed, “I am the Lord’s Servant, the Messiah long promised. Today the church is reminded to remember and treasure the value of that truth. One day, Jesus will defeat the last enemy and life will reign again in our new Eden with God. On our Lenten walk to Calvary, the church sees the Savior come face to face with death and defeat it completely. Because Jesus did, the Son of God can offer us resurrection, the crown jewel of Christianity. One day, Jesus will give our dead back to us – body and soul, living and laughing and walking and talking in the new heavens and the new earth. Today, we see the Messiah heal the physically blind and the spiritually blind. We were all born in the blindness of sin, and without the light of Christ we cannot find a way to safety. Christ comes to us to shine his light into our darkened eyes so that we might see him and live. For those who refuse to see Jesus as their Savior, the blindness of unbelief remains. He gives gracious sight to those who trust in him and displays the work of God in the lives of those who now walk in the light of Christ. We long for a good relationship with God and for everlasting life. The problem is not with the thirst, but where we often go to satisfy that thirst. We often go to the things of the world to find satisfaction, which is a strategy doomed for failure because our sights are set far too low – solutions for our worldly problems. We come to the right place when we realize that our thirst is satisfied only by the one who has come to give living water that wells up to eternal life. When Jesus said, “No one can enter the kingdom of God,” he rightly condemned humanity as a whole. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. But God’s promise is just as universal. “All are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” Clearly God’s gift of salvation is for all people! But that does not mean all will be saved. This gift of God comes by faith to all nations – “Whoever believes in him.” Paul tells us true children of Abraham receive this promise by faith – not by acts of obedience, but by simple trust in the promises of God. Though human beings were called to worship the Lord and serve him only, they did not. Adam worshiped himself and the forbidden fruit and, by doing so, he condemned the world to darkness, sin, and death. But God so loved them! So, he made a promise: I will send forth my champion, my Son. What you could not do, he will do in your place. Because man could not live perfectly and serve God faithfully, the Son of God would become a man to do it in our place and win the victory. Can you imagine facing that dilemma? What should I value – the things of this world or the things of God? In God’s Word this morning we see someone faced with that exact dilemma, and he prays that God would equip him to carry out the duty entrusted to him to lead God’s people. He asks for a discerning heart – one that listens to God’s voice, heeds God’s Word, and follows where he leads. He asks for a heart that is after his Savior Jesus. Our prayer this morning is the same, that God would give us that same heart through the gospel – a heart that invests in what truly lasts because it invests in what Christ freely and fully gives. This morning in God’s Word we see that God is able to bless us abundantly, in ways that we can’t even calculate the whole and sum of how rich he makes us. Not so that we can become rich ourselves or achieve a status we desire, but so that we can abound in every good work and be generous on every occasion.
