Though human beings were called to worship the Lord and serve him only, they did not. Adam worshiped himself and the forbidden fruit and, by doing so, he condemned the world to darkness, sin, and death. But God so loved them! So, he made a promise: I will send forth my champion, my Son. What you could not do, he will do in your place. Because man could not live perfectly and serve God faithfully, the Son of God would become a man to do it in our place and win the victory. Can you imagine facing that dilemma? What should I value – the things of this world or the things of God? In God’s Word this morning we see someone faced with that exact dilemma, and he prays that God would equip him to carry out the duty entrusted to him to lead God’s people. He asks for a discerning heart – one that listens to God’s voice, heeds God’s Word, and follows where he leads. He asks for a heart that is after his Savior Jesus. Our prayer this morning is the same, that God would give us that same heart through the gospel – a heart that invests in what truly lasts because it invests in what Christ freely and fully gives. This morning in God’s Word we see that God is able to bless us abundantly, in ways that we can’t even calculate the whole and sum of how rich he makes us. Not so that we can become rich ourselves or achieve a status we desire, but so that we can abound in every good work and be generous on every occasion. This week we see that even though God entrusts his gifts to us, they belong to him. As Christians wait for Jesus to return, we are commanded to faithfully use the gifts that God has entrusted to us. That word “faithful” is a nebulous word, yet a beautifully broad word. To be faithful means to be trusting, trusting that God has given the gift for us to put to use. And because God is the Giver of the gifts, there is no room for pride or despair when it comes to considering our gifts. It is the second oldest festival celebrated by the church, dating back to the second century. Epiphany means “revealed.” So, in the season of Epiphany we learn how it is that God reveals himself to us. The infant King begins to draw all nations to himself and reveal the mystery that had been hidden – all people would be heirs of salvation through faith in him. God unveiled the mystery that salvation came through Israel for all nations, and the Magi were the first in a long line of Gentiles who would join Israel in worshiping Jesus as King. You and I, too, follow that long line of Gentiles who now worship the King. That same question can sneak its way into the heart of a Christian to make them hesitate and doubt as to whether following Jesus and leaving behind the sinful things our hearts love is truly better than what might have been if we clung to them. Today, God’s Word makes it clear for us. John pointed to the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, the Lamb born to us in the manger on Christmas. And where sin is taken away, real and lasting hope is ours. It’s so much better than what might have been!
