'Cockroach Ka Ilaaj..': How Hindutva Goons Took Over Jantar Mantar 2.0 Amid Police Presence

The right-wing goons assaulted protestors, brandished lathis, and harassed media persons. Four of the accused have already been let out on bail. The Quint was the first to bring forth from the ground the right-wing hooliganism and hypocrisy of police arrangements. Did the police detain them like they did with the protestors? Who were these men spreading hate openly in Central Delhi amid police presence? Journalists Rosy, Gajendra Singh Talk Sexual Harassment FIR Against Delhi Cop, Counter Cases & More

Journalist Rosy has accused Delhi Police ACP Vivek Bhagat of sexual assault during protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Delhi. While Rosy has been seeking an FIR against the police officer, a counter-FIR alleging caste-based discrimination and other offences has been registered against her and others following a complaint by ACP Vivek Bhagat. The case has since reached the Supreme Court, which has granted Rosy interim protection against coercive action in the counter-case. In this interview with The Quint, independent journalists Rosy and Gajendra Singh speak about the alleged sexual assault, their arrests and detention, the counter-cases, their fight for justice and the challenges of reporting on protests in the national capital. Rosy has alleged that ACP Vivek Bhagat assaulted her while she was covering protests against the Election Commission of India's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. Despite her efforts to seek legal action, her complaint has become the subject of a prolonged battle for justice. Protests were held outside the Parliament Street Police Station in support of Rosy, with Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) leaders Saurav Das and Ratna Singh among those who backed her demand for accountability. Rosy, Gajendra Singh and 16 others were arrested in connection with the protests and subsequently released from prison. Their release, however, did not end the legal proceedings or the difficulties they faced. Rosy and her colleagues were questioned by the Crime Branch in connection with her complaint, while the Delhi Police transferred her complaint for what it described as an “impartial investigation”. A counter-FIR filed following ACP Vivek Bhagat's complaint has further complicated the case, raising questions about the use of criminal proceedings against journalists, allegations of caste-based discrimination, police accountability and the protection available to journalists reporting on protests. The Supreme Court's intervention has brought renewed attention to Rosy's case and the legal challenges she faces. In this conversation, Rosy and Gajendra Singh discuss the alleged sexual assault, the demand for an FIR against ACP Vivek Bhagat, the counter-FIR, their experience of arrest and detention, and the risks faced by independent journalists covering protests in India. They also speak about the particular challenges confronting women journalists reporting on police action, public demonstrations and allegations of state excesses. The interview examines the broader questions raised by the case: press freedom, police accountability, the safety of women journalists, the criminalisation of dissent and the difficulties independent reporters face while seeking justice. Rahul Gandhi Leads INDIA Bloc Protest. Can He Defeat PM Modi in 2029? | Baaghi Reporter | The Quint

Rahul Gandhi and other Opposition leaders marched towards the Election Commission in Delhi on 6 October, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The INDIA bloc protest came amid its campaign against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and allegations over the functioning of the Election Commission. But today's protest also raises a much bigger political question: Can Rahul Gandhi actually defeat Narendra Modi and the BJP in 2029? In the second episode of Baaghi Reporter, we examine three things Rahul Gandhi and the Congress are getting right, and three weaknesses that could stand in their way. Rahul Gandhi has helped keep the Congress largely united through one of the most difficult periods in its history. He has remained consistent on questions of secularism, gender equality and cronyism, and has increasingly positioned himself at the centre of the Opposition's challenge to the BJP. But there is a major electoral problem. While Narendra Modi's popularity has shown signs of declining in recent surveys, Rahul Gandhi has so far struggled to convert that decline into equivalent gains for himself. Then there are questions around Congress' political tactics: its messaging, handling of state elections, factional battles and Rahul Gandhi's own involvement in crucial state-level contests. So what would it actually take for Rahul Gandhi and the Opposition to challenge the BJP in 2029? Does Congress need to return to an economic campaign focused on unemployment, inflation and agrarian distress? Can Rahul persuade voters who have previously backed Modi? And can Opposition mobilisation around issues such as the Election Commission, SIR and Gyanesh Kumar translate into wider electoral support? We break down Rahul Gandhi's strengths, weaknesses and the political road to 2029. This is Episode 2 of Baaghi Reporter, The Quint's series of political deep dives. Reality of India's Schools: Deadly Mid-Day Meals, Broken Buildings & Shortage of Teachers |The Quint

On 15 August, while India celebrated Independence Day, Sheikh Mohammad Mafik died in West Bengal’s Bankura after allegedly being assaulted while trying to protect his son, Abdul Hafiz. Hafiz had been documenting the poor condition of a government school as part of the Cockroach Janta Party’s ‘School Theek Karo’ campaign. But Mafik’s death raises a larger question: what happens to those who expose the failures of India’s education system? From journalist Pawan Jaiswal’s reporting on children being served roti and salt in a UP government school to collapsing school buildings, contaminated mid-day meals, teacher shortages and school closures, this episode looks at the state of government schooling in India. In the first episode of The Quint’s new series Baaghi Reporter, we examine the numbers, the human cost and the politics behind India’s education crisis. Two Attacks in a Week: How Hindutva Chaos Unfolded in SRFTI, Kolkata | The Quint

Violence broke out on the campus of the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) of Kolkata after some students on campus, including members of the SRFTI Student Union, objected to an organizational event held by the Akhil Bharatiya Grahak Panchayat (ABGP) inside the Main Theatre of the institute. Essentially a consumer forum, the ABGP has links with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Following the confrontation, ABGP members allegedly attacked the students, injuring many. While ABGP claimed the aggression was initiated by the students, a week later on 4 October, yet another mob, allegedly linked to Hindutva groups, showed up at the gates of SRFTI with sticks, pelting stones inside campus and storming the gates, despite police presence. Students told The Quint that they are being "targeted" by Hindutva groups, simply for opposing their ideology. Deal Maker Modi? Veteran Diplomat Vivek Katju Decodes NYT's Sudden Praise for PM

In a recent article, The New York Times, known to be a critic of the Narendra Modi government, heaped praise upon the Indian Prime Minister's foreign policy choices, especially Modi's "deal-making" spree.  Former Ambassador and veteran diplomat Vivek Katju feels that the NYT article or jubilation over the successful hosting of BRICS fail to articulate the challenges the Indian foreign policy faces, especially in the age of tech and AI, an epoch that Western nations have already crossed with China fast catching up. In this interview with The Quint's Rakhi Bose, Katju talks about India's foreign policy options, the American conundrum, and whether Modi government's "deal-making" and "Vishwa Guru" policies are enough to tide India over to the next phase of global geopolitics. 6 Years in Tihar Jail: Umar Khalid Narrates His Day in Prison in a Letter to Friends & Family

What does life inside Tihar Jail look like when every day follows the same routine? In this video, we bring you Umar Khalid’s first-person account of a day behind bars, as he completes six years in prison. From the early morning “ginti” (prisoner count) to the final lock-up at night, Umar Khalid describes the sounds, routines, friendships, restrictions and small moments that define life inside one of India’s most well-known prisons. “Khalid utho, haath hilaao. Khalid, abbay zinda hai?” — these are the words that begin his day inside the prison ward. Umar Khalid has remained in custody for six years while the legal proceedings continue. His supporters have called his incarceration an example of the challenges faced by dissenters and political prisoners in India, while authorities have maintained their allegations against him. In his prison diary, Umar Khalid writes about waking up to the sound of wardens counting prisoners, sharing space with more than 100 inmates, waiting in lines for basic facilities, receiving censored newspapers, making limited phone calls with family, and helping fellow prisoners with legal applications. Watch this detailed account of one day in Umar Khalid’s life inside Tihar Jail — a prison diary about time, isolation, survival and the human stories hidden behind prison walls. #UmarKhalid #TiharJail #DelhiRiotsCase #PrisonDiary #UAPA #IndianJudiciary #CivilLiberties #DelhiNews #IndiaNews #TheQuint From exposing misinformation to delivering impactful human rights reporting, our newsroom has relentlessly pursued stories that drive change.
