ADA Rooms Don’t Mean What You Think: The Truth About Accessible Travel

Send us a text  “This place is fully accessible and I’ll be able to use my mobility equipment without a problem.” LISTEN: On The Medical Equipment World & Healthcare. Get to Scoop! Unfortunately, that’s not always true — and for many travelers with disabilities, mobility limitations, or medical equipment needs, it becomes a painful discovery after they arrive. At CFS Medical Equipment, we’ve seen this first-hand — not just as advocates, but through real calls from patients who booked an ADA room only to find out: Their wheelchair couldn’t clear the bathroom doorTheir power scooter couldn’t turn inside the roomTheir shower chair couldn’t roll over a 2.7” thresholdTheir Hoyer lift couldn’t be positioned for a safe transferTheir hospital bed didn’t even fit in the roomIn one case, a traveler came to the U.S. from another country, and still wasn’t able to access basic bathroom needs — even though the property was legally labeled accessible. So What Does ADA Actually Mean? The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a civil rights law that prevents discrimination and requires businesses — including hotels and rentals — to meet minimum accessibility standards. That means things like: Wider doorwaysGrab bars in bathroomsRamps instead of stairsAccessible switches and handlesLower countersSpace to maneuverBut here’s the key: ADA guarantees basic access — not personalized access. And it definitely doesn’t guarantee that your medical equipment will work. Where ADA Falls Short ADA doesn’t account for: Hospital bedsHoyer liftsBariatric wheelchairsRolling shower commodesPower scootersCaregiver spaceTurning radiusAdjustable transfer heightThreshold-free bathroom flooringSo while a room may legally qualify as ADA compliant, that doesn’t mean it’s functional for every disability — or every mobility device. Real Examples From Our Patients We’ve seen: 🛑 A Hoyer lift delivered successfully — but it wouldn’t fit into the bathroom. 🛑 A shower commode chair blocked by a raised threshold, leaving the guest unable to bath safely. 🛑 A scooter too large to maneuver inside the room — it had to stay parked outside. 🛑 A hospital bed delivered — but the room was too small for the patient to maneuver with the hospital bed in it. The customer had to move to another hotel. In every case? The room was labeled ADA. And the guests still didn’t have what they needed. Why This Happens Hotels and hosts often believe: “We have a ramp and some grab bars — so we’re ADA accessible.”But they often:❌ Don’t measure doorways properly❌ Don’t consider turning radius❌ Don’t account for large equipment❌ Don’t allow furniture to be moved❌ Don’t understand medical needs❌ Don’t offer photos or measurements And travelers are the ones who pay the price. What You MUST Ask Before Booking Even if the listing says “ADA accessible,” request: ✔ Photos of the actual room and bathroom✔ Doorway width (bathroom and entry)✔ Threshold height✔ Space beside the bed✔ Shower dimensions✔ Whether a lift can fit beside the toilet✔ Clearance for a scooter or chair to turn✔ Permission to rearrange furniture if needed Music by: Fallen #AccessibleTravel   Support the show Contact: www.cfsmedicalequipment.com or www.cfssolutionsdbs.com

✨ WEEKLY SERIES: Grace for Caregivers & Grievers

Send us a text 💛 Grace for Caregivers & Grievers New Series on The Medical Equipment World & Healthcare. Get the Scoop. Podcast! A space for real stories, reflections, and encouragement for anyone caring for a loved one, navigating grief, or holding quiet pain while trying to stay strong. You are not alone, and you deserve grace too. Today’s Reflection: Finding Strength in the Quiet Moments (Dedicated to my grandmother, Elmonia) Good morning 🌞💛 This morning, I woke up thinking about how weekends and quiet moments still feel heavy for me. My husband’s passing was sudden and unexpected, and even though it’s been almost five years, the loneliness still shows up. I stay busy — maybe too busy sometimes — just to avoid feeling the weight of the quiet. Some days it’s not tears… just a deep ache. Other days, it’s a reminder that I’m carrying so much on my shoulders. And even though people see me as strong, I’m still human. I still have moments where it hurts. But as I sat with those feelings this morning, something else came to my heart — my grandmother, Elmonia. She passed from Alzheimer’s and cancer, and we were so close. This month is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, and it feels like the perfect time to honor her. She was a spiritual counselor to people from all over the country… a woman of deep wisdom, faith, and compassion. Somehow, people always found her — and she always knew how to guide them with love. This morning, I realized something: 🌿 The same way she poured into others… I find myself doing the same. Even with my own pain, I still encourage families. I still give hope. I still sit with caregivers in their hardest moments. And when they say, “Thank you, Tara… I needed that,” it reminds me that her legacy lives in me. I think I inherited that from her — the ability to support others even while healing myself. So today, as I share this first reflection, I dedicate it to my grandmother Elmonia, whose strength, spirit, and compassion continue to guide me. And I share it with anyone who needs this reminder: 💛 You can grieve and still give hope. 💛 You can feel lonely and still be a light. 💛 You can miss someone deeply and still show up for others. 💛 You don’t have to be perfect to be a blessing. 💛 Your pain does not disqualify your purpose. Grief doesn’t follow a timeline. But neither does grace. This is the beginning of Grace for Caregivers & Grievers, a series honoring caregivers, grievers, and anyone carrying quiet strength through difficult seasons. If you’re reading this and you’re hurting, overwhelmed, caregiving, grieving, or just trying to make it through the weekend… You’re not alone. I see you. And I walk this journey with you. 💛🙏 #AlzheimersAwareness #AlzheimersAwarenessMonth #HonorTheirMemory #EndALZ #AlzheimersCaregiver #CaregiverSupport #GraceForCaregiversAndGrievers #YouAreNotAlone #HealingInGrief #StrengthInTheQuiet #HopeForTheHurting #GriefAndGrace Support the show Contact: www.cfsmedicalequipment.com or www.cfssolutionsdbs.com
