    Episode 30: 1985 - Part 2

Send us a text Since we had so much to say, this week we're presenting the second part of 1985!  But first, here is a reminder of this years list of Oscar nominees: Out of AfricaThe Color PurpleKiss of the Spider WomanPrizzi's HonorWitnessAs if that wasn't enough, we added a few other categories to the Oscar list like The Best Grandma Moment, The Independent Darling, and Who Did It Best! Was Rocky IV the sequel of the year? Is Dario Argento's Demons the kind of horror movie that sticks with you? We also discuss a couple of the brat pack movies, The Breakfast Club, and St. Elmo's Fire, and how they catapulted the careers of the brat packers. But which one was better? Don't worry, we tell you. We also discuss some of the best action movies and their muscular heroes, of not just 1985, but of the whole decade of the 80s! Who had the best one-liners; Schwarzenegger? Stallone? Norris? And which of their movie franchises came up on top? All this and more as we close on the stellar movie year of 1985. Want to be part of the excitement, listen and find out who we think could have been added to the Best Picture list! Was the Academy right?  Do you agree with our correct assessments? Episode 29: 1985 - Part 1

Send us a text This week we go "back in time" to 1985! Wow, it was such an enjoyable trip to a time of our tumultuous youth to watch the movies that were so essential to our formative years, and boy did we find a lot to talk about!  So much so, we decided to split the show into two parts! Part one is available now, Part 2 will be available next week. But first, we are so excited to discuss this years list of Oscar nominees: Out of AfricaThe Color PurpleKiss of the Spider WomanPrizzi's HonorWitnessAs if that wasn't enough, we added a few other categories to the Oscar list like The Best Grandma Moment, The Independent Darling, and Who Did It Best! With all the great action, adventure, comedy, scifi and fantasy movies that were produced in 1985, why did the Academy choose to be so SERIOUS with their nominees and exclude all of the mentioned genres from the list? We talk about that. Not only do we talk about it, we created our own Oscar's list with blackjack and hookers! Ok, no blackjack or hookers, but we made a 10 slot "Pop Oscars" list containing all the genre movies that got snubbed by the Academy. Who did we think would win? Back to the Future? Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome? Pee Wee's Big Adventure? Well, you'll have to listen to Part One and find out! Plus Comedy Gold, the amazingly competitive Comedy Lead, and we discuss what Carlos really thought of Prizzi's Honor! Want to be part of the excitement, listen and find out who we think could have been added to the Best Picture list! Was the Academy right?  Do you agree with our correct assessments? Episode 27: 1939

Send us a text This week we go back, way back, to 1939! It was a fascinating dive into an era of movies we didn't know that much about. But we learned! Oh, we learned... Here are the ten movies nominated for Outstanding Production (what they called "Best Picture" back then): Gone With the WindDark VictoryMr. Smith Goes to WashingtonGoodbye, Mr. ChipsLove AffairNinotchkaWizard of OzOf Mice and MenWuthering HeightsStagecoachAs if that wasn't enough, we added a few other categories to the Oscar list like Comedy Gold, The Independent Darling, and Who Did It Best! Why didn't Crashing Thru get nominated for being an exciting movie with a banger theme song for a tight 55 minutes while Gone With the Wind needed close to four hours to accomplish!? Over 50 movies were Westerns in 1939, Stagecoach was the shining pinnacle of the golden age of westerns. Should the doctors tell you if you're dying of brain cancer? Would you tell your husband? If not, why? And Humphrey Bogart in a non-private investigator role!? What kitchens have 15 foot ceilings!? Dark Victory covers all this weirdness and so much more. Want to be part of the excitement, listen and find out who we think could have been added to the Best Picture list! Was the Academy right?  Do you agree with our correct assessments? Episode 26: 2008 Intermission

Send us a text Sorry for the delay, we were on a brief marketing sabbatical! This week we look back at our 2008 episode and see if it needs any mistakes rectified or omissions told. But probably not. But probably, we're not always that accurate... In this episode: We made some mistakes. We hold ourselves accountable for those mistakes! Even if we have to make fun of each other for making those mistakes. Except this time! No mistakes, maybe a few omissions... This week we talk about 2008 being the "year of redemption" for three popular actors who rose to prominence, stumbled and rose again brighter and more popular! Brendan Frasier, Robert Downy Jr., and Mickey Rourke all had great movies in 2008 that brought them back to high Hollywood status. We talk about that. Maura Rooney? Rooney Maura? Who were they? Are those names correct? Are they actually sisters or one actress who plays both by changing clothes quickly between red carpet runs? Are they scions of a great NFL family, or three racoons in a fedora and trenchcoat? Never have a couple of talented actresses brought up so many weird questions. This intermission's outro music, Low by Flo-Rida; a song like a black hole that was impossible to escape from in the late 2000s! It was found in many movies throughout the years, but in 2008 was featured prominently in Tropic Thunder, The Women, and Step Up 2: The Streets. All this and more, in a compact thirty minutes! Our technical issues have been mostly addressed and we both sound pretty good if we do say so ourselves even if we were a little sniffly and under the weather this week. Episode 25: 2012

Send us a text This week we look at the Best Picture nominations of 2012 and noticed something different! This year the Academy went with a ten movie list. Not to be daunted, we dove right in: ArgoAmourBeasts of the Southern WastesDjango UnchainedLes MiserablesLife of PiLincolnSilver Linings PlaybookZero Dark ThirtyAs if that wasn't enough, we added a few other categories to the Oscar list like Comedy Gold, The Independent Darling, and Who Did It Best! Did Argo deserve the win? Did Les Miserables and Life of Pi deserve the nominations, or did they take up space that The Hobbit and Iron Sky could have had? Why did John Carter of Mars fail so spectacularly even with all the money and effort put into it? We have some ideas. This was a banner year for franchises! Sequels abound, and movies like American Pie and Underworld were on their fourth installments!  Want to be part of the excitement, listen and find out who we think could have been added to the Best Picture list! Episode 23: 1967

Send us a text This week we go back in time and look at the Best Picture nominations of 1967 and we are really excited to talk about them: Bonnie and ClydeThe GraduateIn the Heat of the NightDoctor DoolittleGuess Who's Coming for DinnerPlus a few other categories we felt needed to be added to the Oscar list like Comedy Gold, The Independent Darling, and Who Did It Best! This week we discuss Carlos nearly crashing out because he didn't understand that the first two and half minutes of Doctor Doolittle which only had a black screen and music was an entr'acte and wasn't actually a broken or corrupted version of the movie on Amazon he spent money to watch. Side-note, Carlos didn't like Doctor Doolittle. We also discuss the prevalence of Western movies during this time period despite their fading popularity, Anne Bancroft's angry reaction to Dustin Hoffman's "romantic" wedding crashing in The Graduate, and our love for King Kong Escapes, the Inoshiro Honda kaiju masterpiece where King Kong fights a mechanized version of King Kong...and other monsters.
