    Iron Pillar Delhi: 1600 Years. Open Air. Zero Rust. The Mystery That IIT Kanpur Scientists Finally Solved

    Leave a piece of iron in the open air. Within weeks it rusts. Within years the rust penetrates deep into the structure. Within decades the metal is compromised. This is so universal and so well understood that the entire modern steel industry is built around preventing it, through alloys, coatings, galvanisation and paint. And yet. In the courtyard of the Qutb Complex in Mehrauli, Delhi, a pillar of wrought iron 7.2 metres tall and weighing over six tonnes has been standing in the open air, exposed to Delhi's monsoon rains and summer heat and winter dew, for over sixteen hundred years. It has not rusted. Not virtually rust free in the sense that it is well preserved for its age. Virtually rust free in the sense that the surface of this pillar looks, to a casual observer, like iron that has been standing for a few decades rather than sixteen centuries. There is even evidence that it was hit at close range by a cannonball which merely put a dent in it. For most of those sixteen hundred years, the explanation was mysterious. Theories ranged from a lost alloy to divine protection to the specific spiritual energy of the site. Then in 2000, a metallurgist at the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur named R. Balasubramaniam published an analysis in the journal Corrosion Science that finally solved the mystery. The answer was not supernatural. It was not a lost technology. It was phosphorus.     On the morning of August 24 in the year 79 CE, Mount Vesuvius erupted. By the following day the Roman city of Pompeii was buried under four to six metres of volcanic ash and pumice.     In 1855 three engineers in Leeds, England, built a steam locomotive for the East Indian Railway Company. They named their firm Kitson Thompson and Hewitson. The locomotive they built was designated East Indian Railway Number 22. It weighed 26 tonnes. It produced 130 horsepower. Its maximum speed was 40 kilometres per hour. That locomotive is still running today. One hundred and seventy one years after it left the Kitson Thompson and Hewitson factory in Leeds, the engine that became known as the Fairy Queen is still hauling passengers from Delhi Cantonment Station toward Alwar in Rajasthan on its seasonal heritage runs. In 1998 it was certified by the Guinness Book of Records as the world's oldest steam locomotive in regular service.     God Particle India: The Kolkata Physicist Whose Rejected Paper Made the Most Important Discovery in Physics Possible

    On July 4 2012 scientists at CERN in Geneva announced one of the most significant discoveries in the history of physics. After a quest spanning nearly half a century, physicists had found the Higgs boson. The God Particle. The particle believed to give all other particles their mass. The particle without which there would be no atoms, no chemistry, no stars, no planets and no people. Rousing cheers and a standing ovation broke out as CERN Director General Rolf Heuer declared they had reached a milestone in their understanding of nature. The world's newspapers celebrated Peter Higgs, the British physicist who had theorised the particle's existence in 1964. Almost nobody mentioned the other name in the particle's full title. The Higgs boson. Two names. Peter Higgs. And Bose. Bose is Satyendra Nath Bose. Born in Kolkata in 1894. Student at Presidency College on College Street, where he sat in the same classroom as Meghnad Saha and was taught by Jagadish Chandra Bose and Prafulla Chandra Ray. Professor at Dhaka University in 1924, where he wrote a paper that the British Philosophical Magazine rejected without much thought. So he sent it to Einstein instead. The letter he sent began with the words Respected Sir, I have ventured to send you the accompanying article for your perusal and opinion. Einstein replied on a postcard dated July 2 1924 saying he had translated the paper himself and submitted it to Zeitschrift fur Physik, the leading physics journal in the world, and that it signifies an important step forward and pleases me very much. Imagine being so good at physics that the man who invented relativity becomes your personal translator. Einstein then extended Bose's work to atoms and predicted a new state of matter, what we now call a Bose-Einstein condensate. Every particle that follows Bose's statistical framework is called a boson. The photon is a boson. The gluon is a boson. The W and Z bosons carry the weak nuclear force.     Ancient Indian Philosophy and Quantum Physics: What Three Nobel Laureates Proved and What the Upanishads Said Two Thousand Five Hundred Years Earlier

    In October 2022 the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to three scientists for proving something that most people find genuinely difficult to believe. Two particles, once they have interacted, remain connected regardless of how far apart you separate them. Measure one and the other responds instantly. Not because they are sending signals. Not because one is physically affecting the other. But because, at some fundamental level, they are not actually separate at all. Einstein spent the last decades of his life insisting this could not be true. He called it spooky action at a distance and argued there must be hidden variables, some undiscovered mechanism that would restore common sense to physics. Alain Aspect, John Clauser and Anton Zeilinger spent fifty years proving Einstein wrong. What they established is that the universe does not satisfy what physicists call local realism. The assumption that separated things are fully independent of each other and have definite properties whether or not they are being measured. That assumption, which feels obviously true to anyone who has ever touched a table, is not a property of the universe at the quantum level. Advaita Vedanta, the non-dual school of ancient Indian philosophy associated with the 8th-century philosopher Adi Shankaracharya, proposes that the apparent separateness of individual things is a feature of perceptual experience called maya rather than a feature of ultimate reality.     Kanada's Atomic Theory: The Ancient Indian Philosopher Who Discovered the Atom 2600 Years Before John Dalton

    John Dalton is credited with discovering atomic theory in 1808. He was 2600 years late. In approximately 600 BCE, on a dusty road near what is now Dwaraka in Gujarat, a philosopher named Kanada was eating grain and thinking about division.
