More Time for Mom

Dr. Amber Curtis

Are you a worn-out mom who used to be the star of the office, spend 45 minutes doing your hair and makeup, and take romantic getaways before you had kids…but now you’re constantly behind and out of PTO at work, there are three days’ worth of dishes piled in the sink, the kids scream when tablet time is over, and you’re so touched out by 8pm that you scroll Instagram instead of spending time with your husband?   Welcome to the club. If you’re paralyzed by what to do first whenever you miraculously find 15 free minutes and fall asleep in tears because you’ve always tried to do everything right but now it feels so wrong, you are NOT alone. I went crazy trying to “balance” it all and believing other experts who tell you to just wake up earlier or manage your time better. Turns out you’re not the problem; toxic productivity culture has led you to equate your self-worth with what you have to show for your time.   I’ve spent years applying my PhD research skills to find scientifically proven strategies for keeping up without burning out—then tailoring them for busy mamas whose hands, hearts, and schedules are fuller than they ever imagined. Now I’ve helped dozens of other women discover the hidden causes behind your stress so you can reclaim your time, restore your energy, rediscover your identity, and look back in 20 years with pride instead of regret.    Join me, Dr. Amber Curtis—certified life coach, behavioral science professor, public speaker, devoted wife, and mom of four—every Tuesday for real, raw stories and actionable advice on productivity, organization, time management, and that elusive thing we call work-life “balance” so you can be the happy, present wife and mom you dream of without sacrificing the talents you’re meant to share with the world.   Ready to make more time for YOU? Hit play and make sure to tune in for new episodes every Tuesday. It's time to take back your life for who and what you love. You’ll soon realize “time” was never the problem after all.

    What ACTUALLY Overcomes Victim Mentality

Send us Fan Mail A 1:1 coaching client recently said one of the most transformational parts of our work together is that I validated painful things she'd experienced that other people had minimized, dismissed, or told her to get over. For years, when she expressed her feelings, needs, or struggles, people she loved responded by criticizing her for having a “victim mentality.” Now, having someone acknowledge her felt experience is what allowed her to STOP living like a victim. Most people think “victim mentality” is complaining or blaming everyone else for their problems. In this episode, I reveal five much more sneaky ways it shows up. In this episode, I’m unpacking the hidden ways victim mentality gets wired into your nervous system…and why trying to “get over it” is the surest way to stay stuck and disempowered.   BY THE TIME YOU FINISH LISTENING, YOU'LL DISCOVER: Why feeling validated is the first step to overcoming victimhoodHow being told your emotions or needs are wrong makes you disconnect from yourselfWhy incredibly capable, high achieving women often feel powerless underneath it allHow victim mentality looks different depending on your default stress responseWhy acknowledging your pain is NOT about blaming anyone elseHow to move from helplessness toward greater agency, choice, and self-trustAnd more!    PRIOR EPISODES MENTIONED: Ep. 6: Martyr Mentality: https://www.buzzsprout.com/2471152/episodes/17083616Ep. 53: The Fight, Flight, & Freeze Stress Responses: https://www.buzzsprout.com/2471152/episodes/18778797Ep. 54: The Fawn & Fix Stress Responses: https://www.buzzsprout.com/2471152/episodes/18831735   FOR SO MUCH MORE: Take my FREE quiz to find out your default stress response: https://solutionsforsimplicity.myflodesk.com/stress-response-podcast  Grab my on-demand “Nervous System Fundamentals” masterclass to finally understand your brain and body like never before: https://solutionsforsimplicity.thrivecart.com/fundamentals/   Join my 6-week Moms Made New program so stress no longer sabotages you—or your relationships: https://momsmadenew.com   Book a free consult with me: https://tidycal.com/solutionsforsimplicity/free-consult    HOMEWORK: How much have you let victim mentality run your life? Why Little Things Bother You SO Much

Send us Fan Mail Why do the towel on the floor, the shoes kicked off everywhere, your husband's plate left on the table, or your kid doing that annoying thing over and over make you snap? You can know it's no big deal while your body reacts completely the opposite. In those moments, you typically decide THEY are the problem and exhaust yourself trying to get the chaos under control…or you make YOURSELF the problem and try to “just relax” and care less. What if neither blame nor shame is warranted? In this episode, I'm taking you inside a ridiculous recent moment where I got triggered seeing my husband’s sunglasses out of place. The truth is, your reaction is never just about the present moment. It’s your nervous system patterns trying to protect you from something that feels unsafe. Understanding these “protective adaptations” has completely changed the way I respond to clutter, stress, my husband, my kids—and myself. I may still get triggered, but how I HANDLE things is so, so much better than the past. I want that for you, too!   BY THE TIME YOU FINISH LISTENING, YOU'LL DISCOVER: Why tiny, objectively harmless things can create surprisingly BIG reactionsWhat hypervigilance is and how it can show up in everyday lifeWhat repeatedly getting triggered by the same kinds of things is actually telling youHow understanding your unique stress response can transform the way you handle everyday stressThe question to ask yourself the next time something seemingly insignificant makes you lose your coolAnd more!    FOR SO MUCH MORE: Find out your default stress response with my FREE quiz: https://solutionsforsimplicity.myflodesk.com/stress-response-podcast  Sign up for my “Nervous System Fundamentals” masterclass to finally understand your brain and body like never before: https://solutionsforsimplicity.thrivecart.com/fundamentals/   Join the next round of my Moms Made New program so stress no longer sabotages you—or your relationships: https://solutionsforsimplicity.myflodesk.com/mmn-waitlist  Book a free consult with Dr. Amber 1:1: https://tidycal.com/solutionsforsimplicity/free-consult    HOMEWORK: Recall a recent time you got triggered. Emotional Decluttering: Drop the Baggage You Don’t Realize You’re Carrying

Send us Fan Mail What if exhaustion, overwhelm, people-pleasing, guilt, and emotional reactivity aren't really about what's happening in your life today...but from emotional clutter you accumulated years ago?  Clutter isn’t just the stuff piled on your counter, shoved into closets, or preventing you from parking in your garage. There’s another, more serious type of clutter that desperately needs to be let go: unprocessed experiences, responsibility for other people's feelings, and old belief systems about what emotions are/not acceptable. Unlike the junk drawer, you can't declutter your emotions by simply throwing uncomfortable feelings away. In this episode, I walk you through a powerful process for examining your own emotional history so you can learn to remain safe, grounded, loving, and present without immediately fixing, appeasing, apologizing, dissociating, or shutting down.   BY THE TIME YOU FINISH LISTENING, YOU'LL DISCOVER: Why feeling bad about feeling bad creates even more sufferingHow your childhood shaped what emotions you can tolerate todayWhy someone else's anger, sadness, or disappointment can feel physically threateningWhy emotional health does NOT mean feeling happy all the timeHow to begin naming, validating, feeling, and processing emotions you've been avoidingAnd more!    FOR SO MUCH MORE: Find out your default stress response with my FREE quiz: https://solutionsforsimplicity.myflodesk.com/stress-response-podcast  Sign up for my “Nervous System 101” masterclass to finally understand your brain and body like never before: https://solutionsforsimplicity.thrivecart.com/ns101/  Join the next round of my Moms Made New program so stress no longer sabotages you—or your relationships: https://solutionsforsimplicity.myflodesk.com/mmn-waitlist  Book a free consult with Dr. Amber 1:1: https://tidycal.com/solutionsforsimplicity/free-consult   HOMEWORK: Set aside to write out your personal answers to the questions posed in this episode. What If Clutter ISN’T the Problem? How to Finally Get Organized (with Tracy Hoth)

Send us Fan Mail If you’re an overwhelmed mom who can’t seem to get the shoes on the floor, piles of paper, and messy counters (let alone the people responsible for them) under control, this episode will completely change how you think about home organization.  I'm joined by professional organizer and life coach Tracy Hoth for a refreshingly different conversation about clutter, decluttering, organization, perfectionism, procrastination, and the mindset underneath it all. Contrary to what you think, clutter isn't evidence that you're lazy, incapable, or failing. Tracy and I talk about why even incredibly high-achieving women struggle to get—and stay—organized, the crucial difference between a skill gap and a mindset gap, and how to overcome the negative thoughts that keep you stuck no matter what home organization system you try.  BY THE TIME YOU FINISH LISTENING, YOU'LL DISCOVER: Why overwhelmed moms accumulate so much clutter (and the resentment that accompanies it)The surprisingly simple definition of what it actually means to be organizedWhere to start decluttering when everything feels overwhelmingWhy perfectionists often struggle with home organization the mostWhen organization crosses the line from helpful into controllingHow organization can support more rest, peace, and presenceWhy getting organized isn't ultimately about having a perfect house—it's about creating a life that supports what matters most And more!  AS MENTIONED: Grab Tracy’s 15-Minute Decluttering Challenge: https://simplysquaredaway.com/declutter Connect with Tracy Website https://simplysquaredaway.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tracyhothThe Organized Coach podcast: https://pod.link/1687840766   FOR SO MUCH MORE: Find out your default stress response with my FREE quiz: https://solutionsforsimplicity.myflodesk.com/stress-response-podcast  Sign up for my “Nervous System 101” masterclass to finally understand your brain and body like never before: https://solutionsforsimplicity.thrivecart.com/ns101/  Join the next round of my Moms Made New so stress no longer sabotages you—or your relationships: https://solutionsforsimplicity.myflodesk.com/mmn-waitlist  Book a free consult with Dr. Amber 1:1: https://tidycal.com/solutionsforsimplicity/free-consult   HOMEWORK: Send me an email or tag me on Instagram @solutionsforsimplicity to share a picture of the most cluttered space stressing you out these days. Your Teen is Changing. So Are You: Individuation in Teens & Midlife Moms

Send us Fan Mail Why is your once-sweet child pulling away, rebelling against your rules, and acting like someone you barely recognize—at the exact midlife moment you’re asking, "Who even am I anymore?" There’s a connection: you’re both going through individuation—the normal psychological process of developing your own distinct identity.  In this episode, I break down the multiple life stages where individuation naturally occurs and underscore 10 huge takeaways that normalize why it feels sooooo threatening to your nervous system. Individuation doesn’t mean you’ve done anything wrong; nor does it have to sever your connection with those you love. Your teenager is simply asking, “Who am I apart from my parents?” Meanwhile you're being invited to (re)discover who YOU are apart from what you do who everyone else has always needed you to be.    BY THE TIME YOU FINISH LISTENING, YOU'LL DISCOVER: Why your toddler or teenager pulling away is actually a GOOD thingWhy parent-child conflict can actually signal healthy developmentHow secure attachment helps children become more independent How your default stress response affects the way your nervous system gets triggered by your teen’s individuationWhy people-pleasing women experience midlife differentiation especially intenselyAnd more!  AS MENTIONED: Find out your default stress response with my FREE quiz: https://solutionsforsimplicity.myflodesk.com/stress-response-podcast Episode 47: The 4 Attachment Styles Every Mom Must Know: https://www.buzzsprout.com/2471152/episodes/18536271    FOR SO MUCH MORE: Sign up for my “Nervous System 101” masterclass to finally understand your brain and body like never before: https://solutionsforsimplicity.thrivecart.com/ns101/  Join the next round of my Moms Made New so stress no longer sabotages you—or your relationships: https://solutionsforsimplicity.myflodesk.com/mmn-waitlist  Book a free consult with Dr. Amber 1:1: https://tidycal.com/solutionsforsimplicity/free-consult   HOMEWORK: What if your child's job isn't to become the person you think they should be, but to discover the person they actually are? Is Life Coaching Worth It? A Real Client’s INCREDIBLE Before and After (with Lauren Schneider)

Send us Fan Mail What really happens inside life coaching? Is it worth the investment? And does it truly change things for the better? In today's special episode, my former client Lauren Schneider speaks candidly about the transformation she experienced after working with me 1:1 for a year. As a busy working mom of two young boys, Lauren thought she just needed help with productivity and time management. What she didn't expect was how deeply childhood experiences, nervous system patterns, people-pleasing, anxiety, body image, and self-worth were shaping every area of her life. You’ll be AMAZED to hear how much changed because she invested in herself through life coaching. Lauren especially opens up about: Why she originally hesitated to invest in coachingHow coaching differed from the counseling and online courses she’d tried in the pastHow she went from chronic anxiety to successfully coming OFF her anxiety medication, as well as from not running in 14 years to qualifying for the London Marathon!!!The nervous system tools that made so much difference she still uses every week How making time for herself paid huge “dividends” for her marriage and motherhoodWhat her husband, coworkers, and family have had to say about it all And MORE!   If today's conversation resonates with you, I'd LOVE to support you, too. The Most Unhinged Things I Used to Do As a People Pleaser

Send us Fan Mail Ever said "yes" when you desperately wanted to say "no"? Changed who you were just to fit in? Stayed silent when someone crossed your boundaries because speaking up felt too terrifying? In today's deeply personal episode, I'm sharing some of the most unhinged things I used to do as a people pleaser—including stories I've never told publicly before. I now know that none of these behaviors were personality flaws; they were protective nervous system adaptations. Through my examples, you'll learn why people pleasing isn't just “being nice". It’s the telltale sign of a fawn response—a subconscious survival strategy developed in childhood to maintain safety, approval, and connection. If you've ever struggled with perfectionism, overfunctioning, conflict avoidance, weak boundaries, or constantly putting everyone else's needs ahead of your own, I hope this episode helps you finally understand why. I’m proof that healing is SO possible! If you're ready to stop people pleasing and start living as your authentic self, be sure to sign up for a free consult call below.   BY THE TIME YOU FINISH LISTENING, YOU'LL DISCOVER: Why people pleasing isn’t a personality trait; it’s a default stress response How people pleasing can show up in marriage, parenting, friendships, and work The hidden cost of always striving to make everyone else happy Why boundaries feel so threatening for recovering people pleasers How people pleasing and overfunctioning actually grow out of fear, not generosity And more!  AS MENTIONED: Find out your default stress response with my FREE quiz: https://solutionsforsimplicity.myflodesk.com/stress-response-podcast Episode 53: The 5 Stress Responses, Part I: https://www.buzzsprout.com/2471152/episodes/18778797 Episode 54: The 5 Stress Responses, Part II: https://www.buzzsprout.com/2471152/episodes/18831735 Episode 47: The 4 Attachment Styles Every Mom Must Know: https://www.buzzsprout.com/2471152/episodes/18536271    FOR SO MUCH MORE: Sign up for my “Nervous System 101” masterclass to finally understand your brain and body like never before: https://solutionsforsimplicity.thrivecart.com/ns101/  Join the next round of my Moms Made New so stress no longer sabotages you—or your relationships: https://solutionsforsimplicity.myflodesk.com/mmn-waitlist  Book a free consult with Dr. Amber 1:1: https://tidycal.com/solutionsforsimplicity/free-consult   HOMEWORK: Reach out to me via email or on Instagram @solutionsforsimplicity to share the craziest thing YOU’VE ever done as a people pleaser.
