    Building Futures One Queen at a Time

    In this milestone episode of To Hum is Human, I sit down with Ang Roell—beekeeper, educator, and co-leader of They Keep Bees, a 300-hive queen breeding and honey production operation dedicated to ethical beekeeping, biodiversity, and workforce development. Ang is a 2021 Grist 50 Fixer, a founding member of the Adaptive Bee Breeders Alliance, co-founder of the Northeast LGBTQ+ and BIPOC Beekeepers Network, and a certified instrumental insemination practitioner working to conserve and strengthen honeybee genetics. Through Queen School, Ang has helped train dozens of BIPOC and LGBTQ+ farmers and emerging professional beekeepers, creating more equitable pathways into agriculture. Together, we explore the remarkable intelligence of the hive and what bees can teach us about leadership, resilience, stewardship, and community. Sherryla shares how a return trip to the Philippines after ten years away awakened a deeper appreciation for her roots and inspired her to introduce Filipino cuisine to a community that had little exposure to it. What began as festival pop-ups and a food truck has grown into Ginger Love Cafe, a beloved local business that serves more than food.     In this episode, I sit down with artist and curator Dean Brown for a rich and grounding conversation about belonging, creativity, and the courage to share your voice. Dean is an artist and the Director of PULP, a contemporary art gallery in Holyoke, Massachusetts. His work spans sculpture, photography, and drawing, and has been exhibited nationally and reviewed in The New York Times, Art in America, and Paper Magazine. His recent series transforms discarded materials—objects found on the street and vintage book covers—into deeply resonant works exploring memory, resilience, and reimagined possibility. We talk about his journey from serving as Chief Photographer at the Brooklyn Museum to founding PULP in 2019, a vibrant hub that now hosts exhibitions for local, national, and international artists, and participates in the Outsider Art Fair in New York City. What unfolds is a conversation about intuition in the creative process, the stories held within materials, and how community is something we actively create together.
