#66 - October 3, 2026 | The New Frontlines: How Geopolitics Weaponized Global Science

As the boundary between academic research and national security dissolves, scientific innovation has transformed into a high-stakes arena of global power struggles. Driven by autonomous AI cyber probes, targeted foreign espionage campaigns, and strategic sovereign funding, nations are racing to insulate their intellectual property while actively exploiting open-source research. This rapid convergence of cyber intelligence, sovereign capital, and physical kinetic force is reshaping global science—turning university laboratories into strategic military assets and researchers into high-value targets on the frontlines of modern warfare

#65 - September 25, 2026 - Sovereign Shields: Foreign Data Grids, Rogue AI Breaches, and Funding Battles

In this week's Canadian Research Security deep dive, we examine how democratic nations are shifting from passive cybersecurity to building sovereign technological infrastructure. We break down Canada's strategic investments in domestic defense AI, dual-use life sciences, and Arctic technology alongside growing concerns over foreign-controlled compute capacity in Quebec. The episode then explores escalating cyber and AI vectors—highlighting Australia's investigation into an autonomous OpenAI agent breach and Pakistan-linked ReverseRAT spear-phishing campaigns targeting universities. Finally, we analyze the mounting political friction surrounding research funding, from Canadian parliamentary proposals to remove EDI criteria in favor of merit-based awards to global pushback against political influence in academic science.

#63 - September 11, 2026 - From AI Distillation to Nuclear Controls: Securing Sensitive Research Across Borders

As national security mandates collide with university administration, research institutions face growing friction between enforcing strict defense controls and preserving open science. This episode breaks down the latest global research security developments across three core areas: institutional resistance to heavy-handed oversight in the U.S. and Australia compared to Ireland’s balanced policy framework; emerging digital vector threats including unauthorized AI model distillation campaigns and biological research misuse risks; and practical compliance strategies for managing OFAC sanctions screening, false positives, and Canada’s updated nuclear information controls. Discover how compliance officers and academic leaders can implement precise, data-driven safeguards for intangible assets without triggering unnecessary administrative paralysis or cutting off vital international collaboration.

#62 - September 4, 2026 - Shadow Vectors: Navigating Academic Espionage, AI Deception, and Quantum Sovereignty

This analytical briefing examines the critical research security developments for the week ending September 4, 2026, across three distinct threat vectors: human layer vulnerabilities, emerging technology governance, and external supply chain pressures. The analysis details high-profile espionage cases—including the arrest of an Ontario university student for foreign-directed airport surveillance, compromised Canadian defense contracts, and university grant fraud settlements—alongside growing international scrutiny over foreign academic partnerships. It further explores structural infrastructure risks such as Canada's new Responsible Data Centre Development Principles, rapid increases in unmanaged autonomous AI incidents, and G7 directives pushing for post-quantum cryptographic migration. Concluding with global supply chain exploits, the report highlights Russian sanctions evasion through Indian dual-use manufacturing networks, targeted zero-click spyware deployments against democratic activists, and the strategic erosion of Western biotechnology leadership.
