Welcome to Gen Wars – the podcast where generations collide over cinema and media…and not everyone’s impressed. Hosted by Nick, Stephen, Cam, and Katherine, this is where Gen X nostalgia gets dragged into the cold, harsh light of Millennial judgment, and occasionally survives the roast. Occasionally. Nick and Cam (Team Gen X) are your classic movie die-hards, who grew up on VHS tapes, mall theaters, and movie soundtracks on cassette. Stephen and Katherine (Team Millennials) are catching up on the classics and are here to ask the real questions, like: "Was this actually good?"

BIG | 80s Moral Whiplash and It's WAY Wilder As An Adult | Gen Wars Review

What happens when a 13-year-old makes a wish to be “big” and the universe says, say less? Pure, unfiltered, 1980s. This week on Gen Wars, Nick, Stephen, Cam, and Katherine jump headfirst into BIG (1988),  the Tom Hanks coming-of-age fantasy that somehow managed to be heartfelt, hilarious, deeply uncomfortable, and a toy commercial all at once. Directed by Penny Marshall and starring Tom Hanks, Elizabeth Perkins, and Robert Loggia, and featuring the most iconic toy-store moment since…well, any toy store has ever existed, BIG follows Josh Baskin, a kid who makes a wish at a carnival fortune-telling machine to be “big.” He wakes up in a 30-year-old body, panics appropriately for about five minutes, lands a corporate job in New York like it’s a casual Tuesday, and somehow nobody in the entire tri-state area thinks to ask even ONE follow-up question. Gen X nostalgia hits HARD, Millennials start asking very loud questions, and Stephen absolutely spirals as the gang debates whether this movie “holds up,” what the movie is actually trying to say, and why no one calls the cops in 1988. Expect arguments about nostalgia bias, toy companies, Zoltar lore, Beast Wars conspiracies, piano scenes, and whether this movie accidentally invented the phrase “blurred morals.” Yes, Stephen is forced to go first, immediately reveals he doesn’t “do cringe” (which is hilarious because this movie tries to KO him in the first round), and spends the episode hovering somewhere between “this was fun” and “my skeleton is entering pre-rigor mortis.” 💥 In this episode, we cover: The Zoltar/fortune teller machine situation (and why this thing shows up in more places than this movie) The FAO Schwarz piano scene (yes, it rules; yes, Stephen only knew it from TikTok… we continue the beatings) The toy company fantasy where being “childlike” gets you promoted in six weeks (corporate America really said: “You seem fun, here’s a corner office.”) How the movie is shockingly wholesome for long stretches and then suddenly hits you with “WAIT… HOLD ON…” The very real “this is a rom-com???” debate (Nick is ready with legal definitions, Stephen is ready to combust) We break it down using our patented Gen Wars criteria: nostalgia, production value, spirit, rewatchability, and overall thoughts, then fight about it anyway. Listen if you love: • 80s movies • FAO Schwarz & Giant floor pianos • Gen X vs Millennial debates • Snarky movie podcasts • Questioning your childhood favorites  …this episode is for you. The Fifth Element | What if Die Hard…but louder…and French? | Gen Wars Review

Welcome back to Gen Wars, the generational movie podcast where Gen X drags Millennials kicking and screaming through cinema history and calls it education. This time, Nick, Cam, Stephen, and Katherine tackle the aggressively weird, wildly stylish, and completely unhinged The Fifth Element, aka Luc Besson asking, “What if Die Hard… but louder… and French?” Directed by Luc Besson, this 1997 sci-fi spectacle stars Bruce Willis as Korben Dallas, a future New York cab driver whose day goes from “traffic sucks” to “a genetically engineered supreme being just fell through my roof.” Enter Milla Jovovich as Leeloo, the literal Fifth Element, who can absorb all human knowledge instantly… yet still talks like she just rebooted Windows 95. Throw in Gary Oldman chewing the scenery as Zorg (a villain who looks like a melted crayon with corporate ambitions), Chris Tucker detonating the movie’s tone as Ruby Rhod, and Ian Holm doing priest stuff in space—and you’ve got a movie that absolutely refuses to calm down. This episode gets chaotic. We break down: - Why this movie could never be made today (and why James Gunn is the only man brave enough to try) - Practical effects that still slap vs CGI that politely asks for forgiveness - Opera aliens, magic stones, questionable age gaps, and rehydrated turkey dinners - Stephen declaring war on New York… again - Nick going full Reddit detective We score it using the sacred Gen Wars criteria: nostalgia, production value, spirit, rewatchability, and overall vibes, and somehow land in “this movie is ridiculous… and we love it.” Is it perfect? No. Is it subtle? Absolutely not. Is it a cult sci-fi classic that just sends it for two hours? MULTI-PASS. Available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and everywhere podcasts live Watch, like, subscribe, and embrace the chaos. Tombstone | The Mustache Olympics of Western Cinema | Gen Wars

Grab your mustache wax and pour yourself a stiff whiskey—this week on Gen Wars, hosts Nick, Stephen, Cam, and Katherine take on the legendary 1993 Western film Tombstone. In this episode of Gen Wars, our multi-generational crew breaks down one of the most iconic shoot-‘em-ups of the ’90s to see if it still holds its ground in cinematic history. Spoiler alert: someone says “I’m your huckleberry”. Directed by George P. Cosmatos (with heavy influence from screenwriter Kevin Jarre), Tombstone stars Kurt Russell as the stoic lawman Wyatt Earp and Val Kilmer in a scene-stealing performance as the infamous gunslinger Doc Holliday. The film also features a powerhouse ensemble including Sam Elliott, Bill Paxton, Powers Boothe, and Michael Biehn. Set in the lawless town of Tombstone, Arizona, the story follows the legendary Earp brothers as they try to leave their gunfighting days behind—only to be dragged into a violent conflict with the ruthless outlaw gang known as THE Cowboys. Based on real historical events, Tombstone reimagines the famous Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and delivers unforgettable one-liners, stylized shootouts, and rich Western atmosphere. In this episode:• Is Tombstone the greatest modern Western, or just riding on star power?• What works, what doesn’t, and who in the Gen Wars crew had never seen it before? (we can make a pretty educated guess) • We ask the hard questions…Who is bad and who is good?• Face blindness runs rampant. Can you tell them apart? Stargate | Is Space Egypt still as fun as we remember it? | Gen Wars

Join hosts Nick, Stephen, Cam, and Katherine as they fire up the wormhole and travel back to 1994 to review the cult classic sci-fi adventure film Stargate! In this episode, the Gen Wars crew dives deep into the intergalactic mythology, the film’s impact on '90s science fiction, and whether it still holds up today. Directed by Roland Emmerich, Stargate stars Kurt Russell as the hardened Colonel Jack O’Neil and James Spader as the brilliant but eccentric Egyptologist Dr. Daniel Jackson. The story begins when a mysterious ancient artifact—unearthed in Egypt—turns out to be a portal to another world. What follows is a journey through space and time, ancient alien civilizations, and high-stakes rebellion. Though it inspired a massive franchise including Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, and Stargate Universe, this 1994 original was the movie that launched it all—featuring iconic visuals, military sci-fi action, and themes of language, myth, and colonization. In this episode: Is Stargate underrated or overhyped? Which host connected most with the movie—and who was left cold? Did the film age well, or is it a relic best left buried? The Substance | Clone Me, Daddy: The Substance Is Your New Body-Horror Nightmare | Gen Wars

In this episode of Gen Wars, your favorite generational movie podcast, the battle lines are drawn over Coralie Fargeat’s body-horror spectacle The Substance (2024). Hosts Nick and Cam (Gen X) square off with Katherine and Stephen (Millennials) in a heated, hilarious debate on whether this feminist fever dream deserved more recognition during awards season, or if it should’ve been left in the lab. Starring Demi Moore in a bold career-defining performance alongside Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid, The Substance is a satirical sci-fi horror film drenched in 1980s aesthetics, practical effects, and Hollywood venom. When aging aerobics star Elizabeth Sparkle injects herself with a mysterious biotech formula promising a better version of herself, her world splits—literally. Inspired by genre icons like The Fly, Psycho, and The Shining, the film explores identity, vanity, and societal expectations around aging and beauty. Based on original screenplay work by director Coralie Fargeat (Revenge), this A24-esque fever dream is both grotesque and gorgeous, drawing rave reviews—and a fair share of confused stares. Cam thinks it’s all style, no soul. Katherine and Stephen argue it’s rich with symbolism and biting commentary on gender and Hollywood hypocrisy. And Nick? Let’s just say literacy may not be his strong suit this week. Topics covered: - Oscars snubs and wins (Best Makeup, anyone?) - Demi Moore’s surprising comeback - The body horror hall of fame - Hollywood ageism and feminist commentary - The roach motif... and 4 pounds of shrimp - Whether it’s actually rewatchable or just repulsive Is The Substance cinematic brilliance or a self-indulgent mess? Let’s just say there are some strong opinions—and even stronger walk-offs—in this one. Die Hard | Yippee-Ki-Yay: Blowing Millennial Minds and Brings the Christmas Spirit | Gen Wars

Welcome to Gen Wars, the only movie podcast where Gen X and Millennials gather to lovingly bully each other and review iconic films. This week, we’re tackling the 1988 cinematic fever dream Die Hard, aka The Christmas Movie Stephen Wasn't Prepared For But Has Opinions About Anyway. Your hosts: Nick - Die Hard Superfan #1, owner of more special editions than Nakatomi has floors. Cam - Die Hard Superfan #2, brings chaotic jolliness and questionable life advice. Katherine - Millennial with taste, carrying the responsibility of knowing how to summarize movies. Stephen - Has seen nothing, yet somehow has the spiciest hot takes. The Movie (In Case You're One of Stephen’s People):Directed by John McTiernan, starring Bruce Willis, Alan Rickman, and based on the novel Nothing Lasts Forever, Die Hard follows NYPD officer John McClane as he tries to reconcile with his wife and instead ends up in a barefoot hostage situation led by Hans Gruber, a man so classy he could commit tax fraud and you’d still thank him. McClane then proceeds to single-handedly ruin the terrorists’ meticulously planned Christmas party using only grit, sarcasm, a machine gun, and the worst pair of feet in cinema history. In this episode, the Gen Wars squad dives into: - Whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie (Stephen said yes, and Nick hasn't stopped celebrating). - Hans Gruber’s villainy vs. his impeccable fashion sense. - Bruce Willis' commitment to crawling through vents like a disgruntled raccoon. - Katherine trying to keep this podcast on the rails (unsuccessfully). - Cam and Nick gushing like they’re starting a Die Hard church. - Stephen’s extremely bold statement that Holly “didn’t deserve it,” guaranteeing angry comments. We also break down nostalgia, production value, rewatchability, and the exact moment McClane achieves peak unhinged energy (“Now I have a machine gun. Ho ho ho.” Pure poetry.) If you love 80s action movies, Christmas debates, Alan Rickman’s smirk, or watching Millennials slowly lose their faith in humanity—you’re in the right place. LIKE. SUBSCRIBE. Alien Romulus | Does Alien Romulus carry the torch for the franchise into the future? | Gen Wars

IN SPACE, NO ONE CAN HEAR YOU SCREAM, BUT THEY CAN HEAR GEN WARS ARGUE FOR 90+ MINUTES. This week on Gen Wars, Nick, Stephen, Cam, and Katherine climb into a derelict space station, trip over corporate negligence, and absolutely lose their minds reviewing Alien: Romulus (2024), the latest chapter in the iconic Alien franchise that boldly asks: What if Alien…but also a requel…and also Gen Z…and also WAY too much goo? Directed by Fede Álvarez (Don’t Breathe), Alien: Romulus is set between Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986) and follows a group of young space colonizers who make the extremely bad decision to scavenge an abandoned station and immediately meet the galaxy’s worst roommate: the Xenomorph. Starring Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu, this film delivers brutal kills, stunning practical effects, nightmare fuel visuals, and enough lore to make Nick yell at clouds (and space jockeys). - Is this the Rogue One of the Alien franchise or just another Wayland-Yutani HR violation? - Is it a prequel? A sequel? A requel? A soft reboot? A goo-based science experiment gone wrong? - Why does auto-aim exist now but NOT later? - Should the Alien franchise PLEASE stop making hybrids? - And who approved this many facehuggers in one room?! The Gen X side is tired. The Millennials are vibing. Everyone agrees the visuals slap. No one agrees on literally anything else. Your Hosts: Nick - Gen X rage incarnate Cam - Gen X disappointment but louder Stephen - Millennial optimism powered by chaos Katherine - Millennial logic, receipts, and zero fear If you love Alien, Aliens, sci-fi horror, movie podcasts, practical effects, xenomorph lore, unhinged debates, and generational chaos, this episode is for you. Tommy Boy | Does Chris Farley's Tommy Boy still hold up after 35 years? | Gen Wars

Did someone say Tommy Boy? Because Gen Wars just slammed the brakes, ripped the door off, and went full road-trip chaos on the 1995 comedy classic that defined a generation. This episode pits Gen X vs Millennials as Nick, Cam, Stephen, and Katherine argue, quote, cry-laugh, and emotionally overshare while reviewing Tommy Boy, starring Chris Farley and David Spade at maximum power. Directed by Peter Segal and produced by Lorne Michaels, Tommy Boy follows the lovable, underachieving Tommy Callahan as he teams up with sarcastic accountant Richard Hayden to save the family auto parts business after Tommy’s father dies. What follows is a Midwest road trip fueled by bad decisions, flying car doors, deer-related trauma, quotable one-liners, and pure physical comedy. Also starring Dan Aykroyd, Bo Derek, Brian Dennehy, and an uncredited Rob Lowe, because of course. Born out of the Saturday Night Live era (but not based on a specific SNL sketch), Tommy Boy flopped in theaters and then became a VHS/DVD cult classic, which makes it extremely Gen Wars-coded. In this episode we cover: - Fat Guy in a Little Coat (obviously) - Why this movie still slaps (or doesn’t) - Pre-9/11 movie zaniness that will never exist again - Buddy comedies, SNL movies, nostalgia bias, and unhinged scoring - Why Chris Farley was lightning in a bottle If you love ’90s comedies, Chris Farley, David Spade, SNL movies, cult classics, movie podcasts, generational debates, and absolute chaos—this one’s for you.
