    Hurricanes have power and so do words. Guest author is Steve Shiflett an independent woodworker and custom artisan based in the Appalachian Mountains of Western North Carolina, USA, North America. In an unflitered, raw, honest conversation he reveals his personal experience in the Hurricane Helene tragedy and what he did to heal his neighbors, his mountain and himself through the power of words and action. THE NATURAL DISASTER AND HUMAN TOLL What did nature do? Nature can take everything—or give you everything. The same natural world capable of unleashing hurricanes, earthquakes, wildfires, and floods can also create breathtaking beauty, sustain life, and bring unexpected connections. Hurricane Helene became one of the most destructive natural disasters in recent U.S. history. After making landfall in Florida as a Category 4 hurricane with winds reaching 140 mph, Helene unleashed catastrophic flooding, storm surge, extreme rainfall, and destructive winds across multiple states. In western North Carolina, already-saturated mountain soils could not absorb the deluge, triggering record-breaking flash floods, raging rivers, mudslides, landslides, washed-out roads, destroyed bridges, power outages, and widespread infrastructure damage. The devastation was staggering: homes and businesses were destroyed, entire communities were cut off, communications failed, and thousands of people required rescue or emergency assistance. More than 200 people ultimately died across the disaster zone, while the damage reached an estimated $78.7 billion, making Helene one of the costliest and deadliest hurricanes in decades. Its aftermath became a story not only of catastrophic weather and unimaginable destruction, but also of survival, rescue, resilience, and communities coming together in the face of disaster. THE COMMUNITY THAT REFUSED TO DIE What did local artisan, author & ébéniste Steve Shiflett do when his bridge was washed out, his neighbors were killed and countless more lost their property and livelihoods?
