How AI is Helping Workers Write Their Way into New Careers

Two million. That's how many immigrants in the U.S. have a college degree — and are unemployed or underemployed anyway. Not because they lack talent. Because they lack the English skills to prove it. Dr. Katie Brown found that gap almost by accident. Thirty years ago, she signed up to volunteer teaching English to Mexican migrant workers and quickly realized she had no idea what she was doing — and neither did the system around her. Later, while teaching ESL at a community college, she sat across from a dentist from Mauritania who'd been told he needed six semesters of English before he could even think about practicing medicine here. That moment stuck with her. It became EnGen — an organization that helps multilingual workers get the specific English skills they need to move into real careers, not just memorize the alphabet. In this episode, Katie and Lorraine talk about what "English upskilling" actually means, why treating language access as an investment (not an expense) can save employers real money, how AI is quietly transforming how people learn to write a cover letter or ask their boss for time off, and why multilingualism should be seen as a superpower instead of a barrier. It's a conversation about talent hiding in plain sight — and what happens when we finally stop overlooking it. Whether you're an employer, a job seeker, a young professional building your first career, or someone who just believes people deserve a shot at using the skills they already have — this episode will change how you see the workforce around you. 🎧 New episode of the iBuild America Podcast— building workforce success, one story at a time.

100% Placement: How One HBI Pilot Program Gave Homeless Veterans a Second Shot

Mario Gonzalez didn't apply for his job at the Home Builders Institute. He isn't entirely sure how his resume even got there. After 21 years in the Army and a plan for civilian life that "didn't really go to plan," Mario found himself working an entry-level job at a tire plant, wondering what was next — until a leaflet fell out of his military transition paperwork. On it, in his own handwriting, were five things he wanted in his next job. Every one of them matched what HBI was offering. He calls it a sign. We call it the beginning of a story worth hearing. Today, Mario is the Vice President of Workforce and Employment Training at HBI, where he leads programs serving justice-involved adults and youth, transitioning military members, and other underserved populations across the country. In this episode, host Lorraine Lane talks with Mario about HBI's recent recognition from the U.S. House of Representatives after a pilot program placed 100% of its formerly homeless veteran graduates into jobs before they even walked the stage. They dig into the skilled labor shortage ("all of them," Mario says, when asked which trade needs workers most), why only a small fraction of construction workers ever go through an apprenticeship, and what it will really take to convince the next generation — and their parents — that a trade can be just as powerful a path as college. Mario also opens up about the instructors behind the scenes: the people who take a former framer or electrician and turn them into a mentor for young people who, in many cases, have never had someone pour into them before. And we talk about AI — not as a threat to the trades, but as an unexpected on-ramp for career pivoters looking for work that actually means something. This is a conversation about second chances, patience in an instant-gratification world, and the quiet power of someone believing in you before you believe in yourself. Preparing Kids for Jobs That Don't Exist Yet

Everyone's got an opinion about Gen Z. Liza Ochsendorf has receipts instead — and she's using them to build one of the most creative workforce development programs in New York. As Director of Workforce Development for Warren County, Liza has turned the traditional school job fair into something teenagers actually want to attend — DJ included, businesses competing for votes, and prizes on the line. In this episode, she talks with host Lorraine Lane about her unlikely path from a DC boarding school to Upstate New York's workforce crisis, why she refuses to call communication and teamwork "soft skills," how AI is reshaping (not replacing) entry-level work, and why she'd put "gritty" on a t-shirt before she'd ever bet against the next generation. Whether you're 22 and job hunting, 35 and hiring, or somewhere in between, trying to figure out what work even looks like anymore — this conversation will change how you think about the people entering the workforce next. In this episode: • Why job fairs need a DJ (seriously) • The real reason apprenticeships stall out before they start • What "portrait of a graduate" means for jobs that don't exist yet • Why Gen Z's refusal to settle might be their biggest strength • 10,000 Boomers Retire a Day — here's who's supposed to replace them • One word Liza uses to describe the future workforce — and why it's not "resilient" 🎧 Subscribe, share, and join us for more real conversations building America's workforce, one story at a time.

From Gang Member to Center Director: Corey Davis on Changing the Trajectory of Young Lives

What does it take to go from the streets to the front office? For Corey Davis, Center Director at the Gadsden Job Corps Center in Gadsden, Alabama, the answer is equal parts hustle, humility, and an unshakeable belief that every young person deserves a shot. Corey didn’t grow up on a clear path. He was a former gang member, made mistakes, stayed in trouble — his words, not ours. But a praying mama, a chance encounter with Job Corps, and eighteen years of grinding through every level of the program transformed him into one of the most passionate, authentic leaders in workforce development today. In this episode of the iBuild America Podcast, host Lorraine Lane sits down with Corey to talk about what’s really happening at the Gadsden Job Corps Center — a unique program located on the campus of Gadsden State Community College, an HBCU, creating a one-of-a-kind partnership that’s opening doors for young people ages 16 to 24. He shares how Gadsden is pioneering pre-apprenticeship programs in culinary arts and material handling — not just the hard trades people typically think of — and how every student is tracked and supported for a full year after leaving the program. He talks about AI training hitting Job Corps before most adults even knew to ask for it, leisure-time jobs that double as career pipelines, and why he believes “comfortability is a beautiful place to visit, but nothing grows there.” And then there’s Zach — a student who came to Job Corps, wasn’t ready the first time, left, came back, pushed through, and last week signed a $16,000 signing bonus with the Army. That’s the kind of story that keeps Corey going. And it’s the kind of story that’ll keep you listening. Key Takeaways from This Episode: • How Corey went from touring with a rap group to running one of Alabama’s most impactful Job Corps centers • Why culinary arts is the next frontier in pre-apprenticeship training — and what that means for students • The power of wraparound services: being a mentor, counselor, and uncle all at once • How Gadsden is already integrating AI training — and why the students are ahead of the adults • The real secret to workforce retention: following students for a full year after they leave • Why employers need to stop sleeping on Job Corps graduates — and give them the chance • What it means to turn a leisure-time job into a full career pathway Whether you’re a young person looking for your next move, an employer wanting to tap into an underrated talent pipeline, or a workforce professional who lives for this work, this episode is for you.
