The Science of Numbing: Understanding Addiction and the Human Need to Cope

Send us a text! Let us know your thoughts, feedback, questions! We won’t know who you are unless you tell us!! Thanks for listening :) We’re back and we’re diving straight into the hard stuff. Addiction. Not just to substances, but to anything we use to numb the ache…scrolling, relationships, achievement, busyness, control. In this episode, we explore the science and soul of addiction, how it forms, what it’s protecting us from, and what healing really looks like. Drawing on the work of some of our favorite thinkers, we unpack the link between trauma, disconnection, and the desperateu search for relief. This isn’t an episode about shame — it’s an episode about understanding. About compassion. About the truth that every coping mechanism started as an attempt to survive. We all struggle, we all experience pain and sometimes we go to extremes to escape that pain.  Thanks to Euphony Productions for the recording and editing!!  Recommended Reading: In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction - Dr. Gabor Maté The Point on Audible - written by N. Put the Lithium in the Water w/The Whiskey Bros

Send us a text! Let us know your thoughts, feedback, questions! We won’t know who you are unless you tell us!! Thanks for listening :) WELCOME TO OUR 20TH EPISODE!!!!!!! Put the Lithium in the Water!!!!! I said what I said… I’m excited and terrified to tune in…Megan Golden and I loved our collaboration with the Whiskey Bros: Around the Table and plan to join them again! Buckle up for a wild ride of honesty and hilarity. Their description is epic:  Drink of the evening: Cabresto Canyon Agave Spirit by ‪@redriverbrewingcompany9970‬  Shout out: Wendell Wiggins for the Awesome shirts! Our Unprofessionals love us! The WhiskeyBros roll into this one already half-fixed and fully feral, welcoming the “Meggins”—Nichols and Golden (aka Ponyboy)—to the table. Between fertility jokes, shoutouts to fan-made shirts, and a crash course on how not to Google “donkey punch,” the crew stumbles into the weirdly wholesome origin of Ponyboy’s name, the messy brilliance of ‪@TheEdgeofOkayPodcast‬  podcast, and why external validation is a hell of a drug. Shots of tequila and moonshine keep the honesty flowing: we get tales of dream jobs hawking luggage on QVC, picking up women in farm trucks, testosterone pellets in asses (and why that clip alone belongs on social media), and a very graphic crash course in “gentleman vs. mama’s boy alpha male.” By the time they’re debating whether chivalry is dead, the bros are half-convinced that being a “f-ckable Ms. Frizzle” might actually be a viable brand strategy. Somewhere between finance hacks, parenting wisdom, and suicidal Shania Twain karaoke flashbacks, the WhiskeyBros prove—once again—that nothing is off limits when whiskey, women, and wild honesty are on the table. https://youtu.be/yqbGlX_qJeo Follow The Whiskey Bros on Instagram @whiskeybrosatt Support the show Thank you Euphony Productions for the brilliant audio and video!
