“Slavery Was Too Long Ago?” Let’s Talk Reparations, Jim Crow & Redlining | Beyond Nrml Ep. 51

“Slavery was too long ago.” That's one of the first arguments we hear whenever reparations for Black Americans are discussed. So in Episode 51 of **Beyond Nrml w/ Mya Lamis**, I decided to ask a different question: **What if we took slavery out of the conversation for a moment?** What happens when we look at what happened AFTER slavery? Jim Crow. Legal segregation. Black Codes and vagrancy laws. Convict leasing. Voting discrimination. Redlining and housing discrimination. Employment discrimination. Unequal schools. Racial violence and intimidation. And policies that affected Black Americans' ability to own property, vote, receive an equal education, obtain certain jobs, build businesses and accumulate wealth. The Civil Rights Act wasn't signed until 1964. The Voting Rights Act came in 1965. The Fair Housing Act came in 1968. That means there are Americans alive today who were born into a country where many forms of racial discrimination and segregation were still legally permitted or enforced. So when someone says, “That happened so long ago,” I think we have to ask: **How long ago is long enough?** In this episode, we're talking about: • The reparations debate beyond slavery • What happened after emancipation • Black Codes and vagrancy laws • Convict leasing • Jim Crow and legal segregation • Voting discrimination • Redlining and discriminatory housing policies • How homeownership affects generational wealth • Employment and educational discrimination • The difference between individual responsibility and government responsibility • Why “I didn't do it” doesn't answer every question surrounding government policy • What people actually mean when they discuss reparations • Arguments for and against reparations • Questions surrounding eligibility, cost and implementation • Why this history still matters when discussing Black wealth today This isn't about pretending there aren't difficult questions surrounding reparations. There are. Who qualifies? What would reparations look like? Who would pay? Would compensation be individual, community-based, or both? How would the amount be determined? Those questions deserve serious discussion. But asking **how repair should happen** is different from pretending there was **nothing to repair.** Whether you support reparations, oppose them, or don't know where you stand, I want this episode to encourage you to learn the history first. Then make your own decision. 💬 JOIN THE CONVERSATION: **If slavery were completely removed from the argument, do Jim Crow, segregation, redlining and other discriminatory government policies change how you think about reparations?** Keep the conversation respectful in the comments. 🎙️ Subscribe to **Beyond Nrml w/ Mya Lamis** for conversations about history, society, Black wealth, healing, entrepreneurship, current events and becoming the best version of ourselves. 👕 Shop Beyond Nrml: BeyondNRML.com 📚 eBooks, coaching & resources: stan.store/MyaLamis #Reparations #BlackHistory #BeyondNrml #MyaLamis #JimCrow #Redlining #Segregation #BlackWealth #CivilRights #BlackEconomics #GenerationalWealth #AfricanAmericanHistory #BlackPodcasters #HistoryPodcast #SocialCommentary

50 Episodes Later: Why You HAVE to Bet on Yourself | Confidence, Growth & Purpose | Ep. 50

50 EPISODES. 🎙️💚 When I recorded Episode 1 of Beyond Nrml, I couldn't see Episode 50. I didn't know exactly where this journey would take me—I just kept showing up. And that's exactly what Episode 50 is about. BETTING ON YOURSELF. In this milestone episode of Beyond Nrml w/ Mya Lamis, I'm reflecting on what 50 episodes have taught me about confidence, consistency, failure, rejection, comparison, purpose, success, and having enough faith in yourself to START before you feel ready. Because here's something I've learned: You don't always become confident and THEN take the leap. Sometimes you take the leap scared—and the confidence comes afterward. 🎙️ IN THIS EPISODE: • Who I was when I started vs. who I am today • Why waiting until you feel “ready” can keep you stuck • How taking action builds confidence • The uncomfortable side of betting on yourself • Dealing with rejection and failure • Why consistency matters more than perfection • Comparing your journey to other people's success • Learning to trust yourself • Why everybody doesn't need to understand your vision • Redefining what success means to YOU • Taking action on the dream you've been sitting on • What I want the next 50 episodes of Beyond Nrml to look like Maybe I'm celebrating Episode 50 while you're still sitting on your Episode 1. Your Episode 1 might be the podcast. The business. The book. The degree. The audition. The YouTube channel. The career change. The dream you've been talking yourself out of. You don't have to know exactly how it's going to work. You don't need everybody's approval. You don't even have to stop being scared. You just have to be willing to take the next step. So ask yourself: What would you attempt if you weren't afraid of being embarrassed? What if you stopped asking, “What if I fail?” and started asking… WHAT IF IT ACTUALLY WORKS? Here's to the first 50 episodes of Beyond Nrml—and whatever comes next. 💚 👇🏾 COMMENT BELOW: What's YOUR “Episode 1”? Black Spending Power vs. Black Wealth: What If We Built Our Own? | Beyond Nrml Ep. 49

What if the issue isn't that Black America doesn't have money—but what happens to our money after we spend it? In Episode 49 of Beyond Nrml w/ Mya Lamis, we're talking about Black wealth, Black spending power, ownership, collective economics, community support, and what could happen if we intentionally started building together. And I'm officially introducing my listeners to UWI and the idea behind the power of just $1. This conversation isn't simply about becoming rich. It's about creating ownership, building businesses, sharing resources and skills, supporting our communities, protecting future generations, and leaving something behind. In this episode, we discuss: • The difference between income, spending power, and actual wealth • Why earning more doesn't automatically create generational wealth • Black spending power and where our dollars go • Supporting Black-owned and local businesses • Why we have to stop expecting discounts and freebies from small businesses • Ownership vs. consumption • Learning and teaching valuable skills within our communities • The power of collective economics • Why trust, transparency, and accountability matter • What we could accomplish when large numbers of people contribute small amounts • The vision behind UWI • How $1 can become powerful when it's multiplied by a community • Building opportunities instead of waiting for someone else to create them • What we can start doing TODAY to create a different future The power isn't necessarily in one person's dollar. The power is in participation. This episode asks us to imagine what's possible if we stop looking only at what we don't have and start organizing what we DO have. What if we supported each other's businesses? What if we shared knowledge? What if we taught each other skills? What if we created opportunities? What if we intentionally built something our children could inherit? And most importantly... What if it actually worked? 💚 Learn more about UWI: 1dolla.com 👕 Shop Beyond Nrml + Dope Healer: beyondnrml.com 📚 eBooks, resources & more: stan.store/MyaLamis 🎙️ Subscribe to Beyond Nrml w/ Mya Lamis for conversations about wealth, healing, growth, entrepreneurship, current events, community and living beyond what's considered normal. Stop Caring What People Think | Confidence, Self-Worth & Being YOU | Beyond Nrml Ep. 48

In Episode 48 of Beyond Nrml w/ Mya Lamis, I’m answering a question I get asked often: How did I become so confident? The truth? Confidence didn't magically appear one day. I built it. In this episode, I open up about my own confidence journey, the insecurities I've experienced, learning to stop allowing other people's opinions to control my decisions, and why confidence doesn't mean you never doubt yourself. We get into confidence vs. arrogance, comparison culture, self-worth, authenticity, limiting beliefs, and learning to trust yourself. I also share practical ways you can start building confidence right now. We talk about: Why you shouldn't wait until you “feel confident” to start How taking action actually builds confidence Why comparison can destroy your self-esteem Becoming comfortable with being different Knowing who you are outside of other people's expectations Why everybody doesn't deserve a vote on your life Building self-trust by keeping promises to yourself Being confident even when people don't like or understand you Learning to take up space without apologizing A 7-Day Confidence Challenge Powerful confidence affirmations One of the biggest lessons I've learned is this: Confidence isn't the absence of insecurity. It's deciding that your insecurities don't get to make your decisions. So here's my question for you: What would the confident version of YOU do next? Whatever answer came to mind… maybe it's time to do it. 💚 🎧 Listen to Beyond Nrml w/ Mya Lamis on your favorite podcast platform. 👕 Shop Beyond Nrml + Dope Healer: BeyondNrml.com 📚 eBooks, planners, coaching & more: Mya's Stan Store 🔗 Everything Mya Lamis: Mya's Linktree #BeyondNrml #MyaLamis #Confidence #BuildConfidence #SelfConfidence #SelfWorth #BelieveInYourself #Authenticity #PersonalGrowth #GrowthMindset #StopComparing #MotivationPodcast #BlackPodcasters
