Scaleable, cost-effective, offering energy security and addressing the 10 million premature deaths resultant from fossil fuel combustion … and offering a positive return to commercial financiers: some of the key benefits identified by Roope Marttila, as he draws attention to civil nuclear in energy generation. From floating nuclear power plants to ship propulsion, this Seatom founder (https://www.seatomtech.com/) has made his bet. The ambition? SpaceX level with a bigger market! Could this the next trillion-dollar company? Reflecting on the IAEA’s ATLAS (https://www.iaea.org/services/key-programmes/atlas-initiative ) inaugural meeting in August? This was the event someone who had been working on maritime nuclear had been dreaming of! Having that signal that governments are supportive was a delight … even the dissenting voices were fascinated by the technology and facts on show. Funded partially by NATO and venture capital, the expectation is that there is commercial funding interest to make the ambitions of this nuclear reactor technology bankable. Ready to Sail Date? Bankable! GenZ for Civil Nuclear

Civil Nuclear: “we want it because …” So summarizes the Master’s thesis by 23-year-old, Max Fairfull, whose research documents the conditional but changing public sentiment in the UK and Japan resulting from concerns over energy security, economic and climate repercussions from reliance on fossil fuel, and the exponential energy demand by data centers. From being the least preferred energy source in the UK in 2000 to second in 2026, just below solar, and from significant anti-nuclear protests after the 2011 Fukushima tragedy to 2026’s restarting of the 1.35GW unit 6 fission reactor in Japan’s Niigata Prefecture, both nations now signal an environment of acceptance that nuclear power is needed to complement — not substitute — renewable energy. Why? To create continuous, low-carbon electricity generation, and rely less on imported energy. Lesson for the so-called grown-ups? Generation Z is ambitious, insightful, and eager to contribute to grid stability through decarbonized solutions. This cohort entering the labor market has never known a world without AI, and is stepping into a workforce shaped by accelerating energy demand and intensifying competition for reliable power. This conversation also busts the negative rhetoric: GenZ is able to express itself and speak up. Making the effort to contact his ‘seniors,’ Max notes, “Don’t be afraid to talk to everyone. All the seniors have been in your position: you lose nothing by sending that request to have a chat.” Message to entry-level candidates: your skills are bankable! Message to the energy infrastructure supply chain: the human intelligence of our youth — technology and AI proficient — is a remunerative investment. Bankable! Nuclear for Maritime Industry

“These will be the safest ships ever built,” suggests Jan Emblemsvåg, on nuclear energy-propelled cargo vessels: a potential to decarbonize and eliminate toxic spills in the maritime industry.  As nuclear energy broke the maritime media waves with the meeting of 30 nations, assembled by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for its inaugural Atomic Technologies Licensed for Applications at Sea (ATLAS) meeting, a knowledge-gaining chat with a professor with extensive commercial experience seems timely.  Not only do we get a glimpse into the room at that D.C.-based meeting, but insight into the two demonstration vessels expected to demonstrate critical operations with Gen VI reactors by the early 2030s and why nuclear is a bankable energy source!  What’s the problem? The International Maritime Organization (IMO) forecasts, “Without aggressive mitigation, emissions from the sector could surge by up to 50% to 130% of 2008 levels by 2050 as global trade expands, with maritime industry currently responsible for 3% of global emissions.” https://www.imo.org/en/ourwork/environment/pages/decarbonization%20of%20shipping.aspx Why nuclear instead of, say, green ammonia? This Norwegian University of Science and Technology professor — amongst his other roles — purports that decarbonizing commercial shipping with NH3 needs all energy sources currently fueling all OECD nations to generate the 10,000 Terrawatts of electricity. Or, OECD+China if the aim is to additionally decarbonize aircraft fuel!  Alongside a center for research-based Innovation, SAINT (Sustainable Applied and Industrialized Nuclear Technology https://www.ntnu.edu/saint), a multi disciplinary member consortium, the ambition is to harness TRISO fuel in a way which is economically viable.  How and When? No fewer than two demonstration vessels powered by Gen IV reactors, expected to reach critical operations by the early 2030s: new technology, far different from the pilot vessels designed in the 1960s! Why is nuclear fuel a plausible alternative energy source? It’s incredibly energy dense. 1kg of uranium offers 3.5 million — yes, three-and-a-half million — million times more energy than the weight-equivalent in coal! We learn that “a couple of thousand tons of nuclear fuel can power the ENTIRE maritime industry v. 400 million tons of coal.  And what do you do with the nuclear waste? Reuse it, we learn! What’s the difference between Uranium 235 v. U-238 v. HALEU v. TRISO pebbles? Listen to learn.  Safety & Safeguards? TRISO fuel’s properties; Owners clearly identified and responsible. Vessel crashed against the rocks? Minimal environment risks: TRISO reportedly withstands 10,000 years’ exposure to seawater or survives up to 1 million year in 4,000 meters sea depth. So we hear. Insurable? Yes, with higher payouts than nuclear incidents on land. Reasonable CAPM? Yes!  Bankable? Well, if fuel is safe, vessels are insurable and it make financial sense. “Yes to all,” is the suggestion. So, financiers: here’s an opportunity for investment return: from providing leases to investing in the ships and reactors.  Where can the ships sail if there isn’t global agreement? Corridors between nations. After all, we have bespoke air traffic flight paths. Electricity interconnected between nations equates to energy security, access to low-carbon energy and potential remuneration. A key benefit of nuclear energy is not just to decarbonize but power AI’s exponential demand.  This episode’s guest, Tim Yeo, is himself the interconnector of experience across financial services, the UK’s House of Commons, thought leadership with the New Nuclear Watch Institute, and the ardent fervor for energy transition away from fossil fuels.  In this conversation, we discuss a one-meter wide copper cable running between England and France which allows for remunerative electricity trading and matching the nations’ excess demand and oversupply. More so, the credibility and safety of civil nuclear as the baseload to complement renewable energy, including why small modular reactors will have a role in the energy mix … if we're serious about energy security, that is. A must-listen as societies grapple with the demand curve reshaping the energy grid.
