In this uplifting episode of Nourished with Dr. Anikó, Dr. Anikó reflects on a joyful family trip and explores something many adults unintentionally lose along the way, the ability to prioritize fun. 43. When Your Nervous System Resists Calm, Breathwork Practices for Regulation

In this episode of Nourished with Dr. Anikó, Dr. Anikó explores one of the simplest and most powerful tools we have for supporting our wellbeing: the breath. Continuing the conversation on mind-body medicine and integrative approaches to health, she shares how small, consistent breathing practices can help regulate the nervous system for both adults and children. These practices are not just helpful during stressful moments, they are most effective when they are practiced regularly during calm moments so the body learns to associate them with safety and regulation rather than crisis. Dr. Anikó explains how breathwork can shift the body from a sympathetic “fight or flight” state into the parasympathetic system, where restoration and regulation occur. When practiced daily, especially in the morning and before sleep, these simple techniques can help create a calmer nervous system baseline for the entire family. Throughout the episode, she offers practical, accessible breathwork exercises that parents and children can practice together, including the 4-7-8 breathing method, candle breathing, and finger tracing breath. She also reflects on the powerful role parents play in modeling emotional regulation for their children, reminding us that children often learn more from our actions and energy than from our words. This conversation is a gentle reminder that even the smallest daily practices can create meaningful change. Breath by breath, we can build resilience, restore calm, and create healthier emotional patterns for ourselves and our families. Episode Highlights; 02:00 The 4-7-8 breathing technique and how it helps calm the nervous system 04:00 Practicing breathwork before stressful moments so the body learns regulation instead of associating breathing with crisis 07:00 Simple breathing exercises for children, including candle breathing, bubbles, and playful visual tools 10:00 Modeling emotional regulation for children and creating a calmer nervous system baseline for the whole family  Tune in and and start your own breathwork practice to calm your nervous system. 40. Reimagining Sleep: Rest, Ritual, and the Forgotten Magic of Night

In this episode of Nourished with Dr. Anikó, Dr. Anikó begins a new conversation about sleep, one that moves beyond tips and hacks and into a deeper reimagining of what sleep actually is. Building on last week’s discussion about engagement, agency, and nervous system regulation, Dr. Anikó explores a powerful observation: people who are consciously engaging with the world, rather than avoiding it, often sleep better. From there, she invites listeners to question a deeply ingrained cultural belief: that sleep only matters because it makes us more productive when we’re awake. Instead, this episode reframes sleep as something inherently valuable. Not a means to an end, but a rich, restorative experience in its own right, one that connects us to natural rhythms, creativity, memory, and even the mysterious worlds of dreaming. Blending clinical insight, evolutionary context, and personal reflection, Dr. Anikó discusses how modern life has disrupted our relationship with night, darkness, and rest. She offers a compassionate invitation to reclaim sleep as a place we enter, rather than something we resist or rush through. In This Episode, You’ll Hear: Why people who engage with the world often sleep better than those who avoid itHow modern productivity culture has distorted our relationship with sleepWhy sleep deserves to be valued for itself—not just for better daytime performanceThe evolutionary roots of our need for darkness, cold, and rhythmHow reframing sleep as an experience (not a shutdown) can reduce resistance and anxietyPractical sleep hygiene basics that actually support deep, restorative restWhy caffeine, light exposure, and bed associations matter more than we realizeHow dreaming and sleep connect us to creativity, memory, and emotional integrationA compassionate approach to sleepless nights without panic or self-blameEpisode Highlights: 02:00 Why conscious engagement with life supports better sleep 04:00 How productivity culture teaches us to undervalue rest 06:30 Sleep as an experience, not just fuel for wakefulness 09:00 Reconnecting with natural rhythms of light, darkness, and night 13:30 Preserving the bed as a place for rest and sleep 17:00 Temperature, darkness, and melatonin: supporting the body’s biology 19:30 Caffeine, stimulants, and why afternoon intake matters 23:00 What to do when you can’t sleep, without spiraling into anxiety 26:00 Reframing sleep as restoration, connection, and nightly renewal This conversation is the first of many on sleep, offering a gentle but profound shift: what if sleep isn’t the end of life for the day but another world we get to visit, every single night? 39. The Elephant in the Room: Why Avoidance Is Fueling Our Exhaustion

In this episode of Nourished with Dr. Anikó, Dr. Anikó addresses the emotional exhaustion so many people are carrying right now—and names what’s often left unspoken: the cost of avoidance. As violence, injustice, and political instability continue to unfold, many of us feel overwhelmed, depleted, and unsure how to stay engaged without burning out. Dr. Anikó challenges the idea that disengaging from the world is a form of self-care, and instead offers a grounded, compassionate reframe: avoiding what hurts doesn’t protect us—it quietly dominates our lives. Through personal reflection, clinical insight, and cultural context, this episode explores why consciously engaging with grief, fear, and anger can actually reduce stress, improve well-being, and restore a sense of agency. Dr. Anikó also reframes self-care as something deeper than individual soothing, inviting listeners to consider how collective care and meaningful action support both personal and communal health. This conversation is an invitation to stop expending energy denying the “elephant in the room” and instead use that emotional energy to create connection, movement, and change. In This Episode, You’ll Hear: Why political and collective exhaustion is often driven by avoidanceHow suppressing grief, anger, and fear increases stress and inflammationThe difference between conscious engagement and trauma spiralingWhy action and community involvement support emotional resilienceA reframing of self-care beyond bubble baths and personal escapeHow engaging with what matters restores agency and meaningWhy joy, play, and celebration are not distractions—but fuel for the fightEpisode Highlights: 01:00 Naming the collective exhaustion and emotional overwhelm of this moment 03:30 Why avoiding the news and hard truths doesn’t actually protect us 05:30 How conscious engagement reduces fear, stress, and emotional domination 08:30 Why bubble-bath self-care can’t solve systemic anxiety and burnout 16:00 “Fight for the dance”: grief, joy, and why feeling can keep us from exhaustion Episodes Referenced:  38.
