Welcome to Tales from Turriff, an oral history project by 2F at Turriff Academy in North East Scotland. In this special series, pupils collaborate with the wonderful residents of Dawson Court sheltered housing to capture and share stories of life, work, and community in years gone by. Through conversation, curiosity, and care, young and old come together to celebrate local history and the power of listening.

    Episode 4 - David

    In this special episode, we hear from 99-year-old David Allan—though he cheekily insists otherwise—as he shares his vivid memories of life growing up on a croft. With warmth and humour, David paints a picture of farming in the past, from the hard graft to the deep satisfaction it brought him. In a touching twist, he’s joined by a pupil who is also a young farmer, making this conversation a heartfelt exchange between two generations connected by a shared love of the land. This is a celebration of tradition, community, and the enduring spirit of farming life.

    Episode 3 - Christina

    In this delightful episode, we meet Christina Smith, whose incredible memory brings the past vividly to life. She shares stories of growing up with her 12 siblings on a busy croft in Oldtown of Ord, where there was always something to do and someone to laugh with. Christina fondly recalls her love of Sunday school and speaks with warmth about the teachers who inspired her and shaped her childhood. Full of charm, humour, and heartfelt reflections, this episode is a celebration of family, faith, and friendship.
