Legal Is a Growth Engine: Why the Smartest Founders Lawyer Up on Day One

Most founders treat legal as the paperwork you handle once a deal is on the table. Business and technology attorney Morvareed Salehpour makes the opposite case: legal architecture is part of building the product, and the founders who bring it in early are the ones who raise more and get acquired for more. She joins Maria Pienaar and Katie Whitcraft to unpack a copy-left near-miss that almost open-sourced a client's proprietary code, why online templates leave AI and SaaS (software as a service) founders exposed, and how to prioritize legal spend when the budget is tight. In this episode: The copy-left trap that can unintentionally open-source your proprietary code Why templates and online legal tools fall short for AI and SaaS founders Triaging legal risk on a limited budget, starting with your biggest exposure Data privacy and compliance across US states, consumer health laws, and global markets How the smartest founders use legal as a growth engine Chapters 0:00 Introduction 2:11 Open Source and the Copy-Left Trap 6:33 Legal From Day One: Templates, Triage, and Timing 20:30 Negotiation Strategy and the IP Sections That Sink Deals 33:57 AI, Vibe Coding, and Data Privacy Time Bombs 46:46 Insurance, Liability Chains, and Legal as a Growth Engine About the guestMorvareed Salehpour is the managing attorney of Salehpour Legal, a business and technology law practice serving software, SaaS, AI, digital health, biotech, and media-tech companies, along with the designers, developers, and IT providers who support them. You Can't Call a CEO's Baby Ugly: The Messaging Truth Founders Avoid

You Can't Call a CEO's Baby Ugly: The Messaging Truth Founders Avoid Most founders never hear the truth about their own messaging, because nobody wants to tell a CEO their website is bad. Greg Rosner built a business around telling them anyway. In this episode he sits down with Maria Pienaar and Katie Whitcraft to unpack truth extraction, the magnetic messaging framework, and why your website now has to make sense to ChatGPT and Claude as much as to a human buyer. Along the way: the incognito "naked test" for whether AI recommends you, the brand signal score, eleven AI employees with real job descriptions, and a rogue agent named Kira who ran up a $119 bill before anyone noticed. About Greg Rosner Greg Rosner is the CEO of PitchKitchen and author of the Road Warrior Survival Guide. After a long career in sales presentations, he left the corporate world to start PitchKitchen, which helps B2B companies turn bad presentations and confusing websites into clear, true stories that both buyers and LLMs can follow. He also runs an AI workforce training program for business owners and CEOs. It Doesn't Know What It Doesn't Know: Building the Context Layer Your AI Is Missing

He lost his events and production company to the pandemic. The internal tool he built to stop wasting his own time became the product strangers emailed him to pay for, four days after it launched. Ilai Szpiezak is a three-time founder, originally from Argentina and based in London, who came into tech "because of the pandemic" and stayed. With his co-founder Charlie Day he built Dolphin AI, won a UK government contract, and then noticed he was spending most of his day writing prompts. So he built something to fix that. That side tool, Pretty Prompt (a browser extension that improves any AI prompt in one click), launched on Product Hunt as the #2 product of the day, and within four days people were emailing to pay for it. The pivot wrote itself. In this Ops or Die conversation with Katie Whitcraft and Maria Pienaar, Ilai makes the case that the model is becoming a commodity and the context you bring to it is the real advantage. He explains why "it doesn't know what it doesn't know" sits underneath every AI interaction, why he treats a prompt as a task he hands off rather than a conversation, and the one thing that separates a mediocre output from a 10x one: focus. Along the way the three of them get into the "LLM (large language model) passport" idea, the security "shield" that flags when you are about to paste an API key into a chatbot, the AI slop showing up in cold sales email, the ethics of creative AI, and why the skill the next workforce gets hired for is critical thinking rather than prompting. If you have ever typed a lazy ask into ChatGPT, waited ten minutes, and gotten back something useless, this is the episode that explains why, and what to do about it. Key topics: startup operations, AI prompting, prompt engineering, agentic AI, context engineering, LLMs as a commodity, browser extensions, product-market fit, pivoting, building in public, AI governance and security, creative AI ethics, ops stack, fractional COO, SmartOps Guest: Ilai Szpiezak (Co-founder & CEO, Pretty Prompt) Website: https://pretty-prompt.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ilaiszp/ Hosts: Katie Whitcraft and Maria Pienaar Katie Whitcraft: https://www.linkedin.com/in/katiewhitcraft/ Maria Pienaar: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mariapienaar/ CONNECT WITH US Website: https://www.scalespark.ai For smarter business operations, visit ScaleSpark.AI

Find Your Swiss Army People - and Other Things Nobody Tells You About Scaling a Startup

She got FDA clearance for a transparent surgical mask in March 2020. Two months later, ClearMask was shipping worldwide — and her four co-founders still had day jobs. Elyse Heob is the founder behind two healthcare exits: a corporate wellness company acquired in 2016, and ClearMask, which she grew from zero to $45M without ever taking outside investment (19 million masks worldwide). Now she coaches early-stage founders on the parts of the job nobody puts on the highlight reel. In this Ops or Die conversation with Katie Whitcraft and Maria Pienaar, Elyse breaks down how founders keep underpricing time when they buy tools, why a regulated-industry mindset is what separates founders who cross $1M to $10M from ones who stall, and how "Swiss Army knife" hires kept ClearMask agile at a fraction of its peer headcount. She and the hosts also dig into founder blindness (why you cannot see your own product), business continuity during fundraising, and why titles should bend to fit the people you have. If you have been telling yourself you'll fix ops later, this is the episode that will change your mind. Key topics: startup operations, healthcare startups, FDA regulatory strategy, non-dilutive fundraising, accelerators, hiring for aptitude, business continuity, founder resilience, fractional COO, SmartOps Guest: Elyse Heob — Founder, ClearMask Hosts: Katie Whitcraft and Maria Pienaar Want smarter ops? The I Love Lucy Problem: When Orders Fly and Ops Falls Apart

This week on Ops or Die, Katie Whitcraft and Maria Pienaar sit down with Lenica Stephen, founder and CEO of IBOSS (Interactive Business Optimization Services), to talk about the thing most founders avoid until it’s expensive: operational debt. Lenica spent over fifteen years building and running PMOs inside corporate environments before she started doing the same work for founders directly. Her take is blunt: operational debt rarely starts as one bad decision. More often, it’s a slow pile-up of shortcuts, undocumented calls, and “we’ll fix it later” moments that build up while a business is busy growing. In this episode, Lenica breaks down her Five Pillars framework for finding where that debt is hiding Purpose ➣are your priorities and strategy actually written down anywhere, or do they just live in your head?Products➣ what is your business actually selling, and would your whole team give the same answer?Processes➣if you got hit by a bus tomorrow, could someone else pick up where you left off?People➣does your team, and your clients, know what’s expected of them?Performance➣ if you can’t measure it, are you sure it’s actually happening? Also covered: the I Love Lucy chocolate factory scene as the perfect metaphor for operations that can’t keep pace with growth, why pivoting a business is a lot like redirecting a cruise ship mid-voyage, how to find the one friction point (the “bleeding neck”) that’s costing you the most right now, and a candid conversation about AI in operations, including why garbage in, garbage out still applies no matter how good the model is. Lenica’s challenge to listeners: pick one piece of operational debt in your business and commit to fixing it, one quarter at a time.
