the cost of looking the other way

Louis argues that “becoming a villain” often starts not with overtly malicious intent, but with willful ignorance. He gives an example from his own business, where a bad payment setup was double-billing customers. He notes that a business can either ignore the problem, exploit it by quietly refunding only complainants more than they paid while continuing to overcharge others, or investigate and fix it properly. He says the ethical choice is to inspect systems when something seems off, even if doing so costs time, money, or short-term reputation. The video then shifts to the recent controversy over UnitedHealthcare’s AI-driven claim denials. He argues that whether or not the specific “90% denial” figure is exact, the larger pattern is clear: denial rates have risen, appeals are rarely filed, and when they are filed, many are successful. He suggests that executives cannot simply claim ignorance if they had obvious reasons to investigate rising profits alongside rising denials and worsening customer outcomes. In his view, choosing not to connect those dots is itself culpable. Rossmann concludes by saying that society needs clear standards and accountability, because vigilante judgments are subjective. The practical lesson is simple: inspect what you expect. If something seems too good to be true, or if profits rise while customers are being harmed, you should investigate rather than look away. He frames this as both a moral duty and a long-term safeguard against becoming the kind of person or company that harms others through neglect.
