    Behind Enemy Lines - October 04, 2026

What does it look like to faithfully follow Christ when you feel like you're in the minority? In 1 Kings 18, we meet three men with three very different allegiances: Elijah is following the Lord, Obadiah is fearing the Lord, and Ahab is forsaking the Lord. Elijah boldly steps into a hostile environment, while Obadiah faithfully serves God from within Ahab's household. Their callings look different, but both demonstrate what it means to remain faithful when surrounded by compromise. Like Obadiah, you may find yourself working, studying, or living among people who don't share your faith or convictions. God may have placed you there for a reason. Faithfulness doesn't always look the same for everyone, but wherever God has placed us, we're called to serve with courage, integrity, and obedience. There's a sense in which every follower of Jesus lives “behind enemy lines.” But the people around us are not the enemy—they're our mission field. The church has been sent into the world on a rescue mission with the good news of Jesus Christ. And we don't carry out that mission in our own strength. Jesus was perfectly faithful in a world that rejected Him, went to the cross for sinners, rose again, and now gives us the security and strength to serve others selflessly, speak truth graciously and boldly, and obey God even when obedience is costly. Wherever God has placed you—that's your mission field. Facing the Unforeseen - September 27, 2026

What do you do when life throws something at you that you never saw coming? Elijah had already watched God provide at the brook of Kerith and miraculously sustain the widow at Zarephath. But then tragedy came out of nowhere: the widow’s son died. Sometimes the greatest tests of our faith are the ones we never anticipated—the moments that leave us asking questions and struggling to understand what God is doing.    In this passage, we see a situation that seems hopeless, a servant who feels helpless, and a Savior whose power is limitless. Elijah didn’t have an explanation for the widow’s pain. Instead, he took what he could not understand and could not fix to the One who could—and he prayed.      Prayer isn't powerful because of the greatness of the person praying. Prayer is powerful because of the greatness of the God who hears it. When Elijah had reached the limits of what he could do, he trusted the limitless power of God.      The unforeseen will come. We won't always understand why. But what is unforeseen to us is never unforeseen to God. We don't live on the basis of explanations; we live on the basis of His promises. And the ultimate proof of His faithfulness is the empty tomb of Jesus Christ.      Whatever unexpected circumstance you're facing, remember: when the situation seems hopeless and you feel helpless, trust the Savior whose power is limitless.     If you’re ready to respond to the Savior who came for you, visit https://whatasavior.com/journey to learn what it means to follow Jesus and take your next step in faith. #53 - Just Enough - The Sunday Rewind

What happens when God doesn’t give you an abundance—but gives you exactly what you need for today? In this episode of The Sunday Rewind, Pastor Brandon and Joel continue through Elijah’s story in 1 Kings 17 and the widow of Zarephath. God sends Elijah into enemy territory and chooses an unlikely person—a widow who is herself nearly out of food—to provide for him. It’s another reminder that God’s provision doesn’t always come from the places or people we expect. The conversation gets especially practical around the widow’s flour and oil. God could have filled her storehouse, but instead, there was just enough each day. Why? Because sometimes abundance can tempt us to trust the provision rather than the Provider. Daily dependence keeps bringing us back to the source of everything we have. They also discuss how the difficult circumstances we desperately want God to remove may sometimes be the very circumstances He uses to shape our character and deepen our dependence on Him. We may not always see or understand what God is doing, but we can trust Him in the middle of it. Ultimately, the story points beyond flour and oil to Jesus Christ—the sufficient provision for those who trust in Him, regardless of their circumstances. A Scoop Away From Empty - September 20, 2026

What happens when you reach the end of what you have? In 1 Kings 17, Elijah meets a widow who is literally one scoop away from empty. With only a handful of flour and a little oil remaining, she has no reserves, no backup plan, and no hope for tomorrow. Yet at the bottom of her barrel, she discovers the faithfulness and sufficiency of God. Her story teaches us three truths about God's provision: the means is often strange, the measure is always sufficient, and the miracle is never suspect. What looks inadequate in our hands is never inadequate in the hands of God. Day after day, the widow returned to a barrel that should have been empty—and day after day, there was enough. The barrel didn't necessarily overflow, but it never ran dry. God was teaching her to trust Him for today. Maybe you know what it feels like to be a scoop away from empty—financially, emotionally, relationally, physically, or spiritually. The promise isn't that your barrel will always be full. It's that God will always be faithful. When we reach the end of our resources, we discover that we will never reach the end of His. And God's greatest provision isn't found in a barrel of flour or a jar of oil. It's found in Jesus Christ, who gives forgiveness, righteousness, hope, and eternal life to everyone who trusts in Him. #52 - When the Brook Dries Up - The Sunday Rewind

What do you do when you’ve followed God faithfully—and the very thing He provided suddenly begins to disappear? In this episode of The Sunday Rewind, Pastor Brandon and Joel continue through the life of Elijah and his time at the Brook Kerith. What may have looked like Elijah being sidelined was actually a season of preparation. God was doing important work beneath the surface, teaching Elijah that hidden seasons are not wasted seasons. They also unpack the danger of placing our confidence in God’s provision instead of the Provider. Jobs change. Relationships struggle. Plans fall apart. Brooks dry up. But changing circumstances don't mean God has changed or abandoned us. Sometimes God uses the loss of something we depended on to redirect our dependence back to Him. Ultimately, God is often more interested in who we are becoming than what we are accomplishing. Our weakness isn't necessarily a disadvantage; when dependence on God is the goal, weakness can actually become an advantage. And the gospel reminds us that our hope has never rested in our own sufficiency, but in the complete sufficiency of Jesus Christ. Lessons by the Brook - September 13, 2026

Sometimes God does His deepest work in the places where no one else can see. After Elijah boldly stood before King Ahab, God did something unexpected—He sent him away to hide beside the Brook Kerith. What may have looked like a season of inactivity was actually a season of preparation. Before God would use Elijah publicly on Mount Carmel, He first needed to shape him privately by the brook. What God does in us is often more important than what He does through us. Elijah's time at Kerith teaches us three important lessons: God's hidden seasons are not wasted seasons. God often prepares us in private for what He plans to accomplish through us in public. God's provision is always sufficient for our situation. Day by day, God provided exactly what Elijah needed, teaching him to depend on the Source rather than himself. God's direction doesn't have to make sense for it to be right. Even though Elijah was exactly where God told him to be, the brook still dried up. A difficult road isn't always the wrong road, and disruption doesn't mean God has deserted us. Whatever season you're walking through, Elijah's story reminds us to obey God's instruction, trust God's provision, and follow God's direction—even when we can't see what He's doing. Our confidence isn't in the brook; it's in the God who provides it. #51 - Faith in the Ups and Downs - The Sunday Rewind

Life isn’t made up of a few isolated highs and lows—the ups and downs are often the rhythm of life itself. In this episode of The Sunday Rewind, Pastor Brandon, Joel, and Hopewell counselor Scott talk through the opening of the Ups & Downs series and the life of Elijah. They unpack what it means that Elijah was “a man like us,” why Christians shouldn’t treat biblical figures like spiritual superheroes, and how God continues to work through ordinary, imperfect people. The conversation also goes deeper into burnout, depression, compassion fatigue, unrealistic expectations, and the importance of community. They discuss the difference between feeling discouraged and clinical depression, why rest matters, and why struggling emotionally does not mean your faith has failed. Most importantly, Elijah’s story reminds us that our confidence cannot rest in outcomes, performance, or our own strength. God remains faithful through both the mountaintops and the valleys—and we were never meant to walk through either one alone. Elijah: A Man Like Us - September 06, 2026

When we think of Elijah, we often picture the bold prophet who stood before kings, called down fire from heaven, and confronted the prophets of Baal. But Scripture reminds us that Elijah was a man like us. He experienced courage and fear, victory and disappointment, provision and deprivation, mountaintops and valleys. Elijah lived during dark days of compromise and idolatry, yet God raised up an ordinary man willing to stand for extraordinary truth. His story reminds us that “the story of Elijah is not the story of a great man, but of a great God working through a very human man.” As we begin our Ups & Downs series, Elijah's life gives us two important challenges: In a world of compromise, stand up for truth and stand out from the crowd. And through life's ordinary ups and downs, learn to trust an extraordinary Savior. Our circumstances change. Our emotions fluctuate. Our strength sometimes fails. But our hope isn't ultimately found in our ability to hold everything together—it's found in Jesus Christ, who is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Ordinary people. An extraordinary God.
