Luke 20:9-18-The Parable of the Wicked Tenants–How The Rejected Savior’s Words Show Justice & Grace

The Parable of the Wicked Tenants – How The Rejected Savior’s Words Show the Justice & Grace of God Luke 20:9-18 Preached 10/11/26 Introduction: In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus, is portrayed as the sinless Son of Man. The intended audience was primarily to Believing Gentiles in Jesus Messiah. Now, before we turn to our text, we must keep Isaiah 5:1-7 in mind as well as the immediately preceding context in Luke 19:45-20:8.   A.    The Setting (Luke 20:9) a.     God and His people                                                     i.      The “man” who “planted a vineyard” represents God the Father.                                                  ii.      The “vine-growers” (LSB; or “tenants”, ESV) represent Israel.   B.    The Situation (Luke 20:10-15) a.     The “vine-growers” or “tenants” are wicked, murderous and bloodthirsty                                                     i.      The “slaves” (v. 10-12) represent the prophets that God sent to unbelieving Israel (Luke 20:6; Matthew 23:29-39; Genesis 37:20; 1 Kings 9:7-9; chs. 21 & 22; 2 Chronicles 24:17-21; 26:10; Psalm 1:3; Isaiah 3:14-15).                                                  ii.      The “beloved son” is none other than the Lord & Savior Jesus Christ Himself (v. 13; Acts 4:10-12; Psalm 118:22).   C.    The Solution (Luke 20:16-18) a.     The wicked “tenants” will be met with the Holy, Righteous, Judgment of God (v. 16-18; Luke 11:49-51; 13:34-35)! Jesus will see to it that those who rejected Him will be paid in full by being sent to everlasting, conscious torment in hell where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth (Luke 13:28; Matthew 23:33)!                                                     i.      Jesus’ quotation in v. 18 of Psalm 118:22 shows the impending eschatological judgment. Jesus will have the final say in His wrath (John 3:36; Revelation 19:11-16).   Conclusion: Jesus’ authoritative actions and words expose the sinful (& irrational) hearts of all men. His words to Israel show that He is truly their only Savior and that they needed to believe in Him & His authority over their lives in order to be saved. These words of Jesus from this parable also prophesy of His inevitable murder on the cross. Jesus was absolutely spotless in His words & actions in calling out Israel’s rejection & unbelief. There can be no ambiguity on His identity, words & actions. Everything He said and did prove that He is indeed the sinless Son of Man, the Promised Messiah and God in the flesh. Only those who are poor in spirit (humble), afflicted, brokenhearted, captive, and oppressed can receive Jesus’ words by faith and be saved (Matthew 5:3; Luke 6:20; Isaiah 61:1-2; John 8:31-38).   Personal Reflection Questions:   1)     What is your response to Jesus’ Words today? 2)    Is this the Jesus that you believe in? 3)    Are you offended by His authority over you? Do you think His words and actions are blasphemous? 4)   Are you duplicitous (deceptive in words or action) in your response? Are you double-minded in your response to Jesus’ clear words (James 1:8)? Are you lukewarm (Revelation 3:15-16)? 5)    Are you a wicked vine-grower (wicked tenant)? 6)   Do you see your sins as essentially murdering Jesus (The “beloved son”; Luke 20:13) or are you distancing yourself from Jesus like the Jewish assembly (See Acts 2:36; 1 Cor. 2:7-8)? 7)    For those of you who bow the knee to the Lord & Savior Jesus Christ, do you hang on every word that Jesus says (Luke 19:48)? Do you believe that His words are the words of eternal life (John 6:68)? 8)   The King (The Lord & Savior Jesus Christ) is coming. How will you respond to Him today before the day of Judgment? Are you receiving Him by Faith Alone? Or are you rejecting Him like some of the Israelites (& religious leaders) did? 9)   Is your trust in the true Lord & Savior Jesus Messiah (See John 1:11-13; Acts 2:37-42)? Come to Christ Alone in repentance and faith to be saved (Acts 4:10-12)!

Coalinga High School Baccalaureate: Truth for All-Time: Why God's Truth Matters (2 Peter 1:16-21)

Coalinga High School Baccalaureate Address Preached June 1, in the year of our Lord 2026 Truth for All-Time: Why God’s Truth Matters 2 Peter 1:16-21 Introduction: We are living in perilous times. This isn’t an understatement. We also live in an age of mass information. In the past, people would have to travel large distances in order to obtain information. Now, we simply receive a notification, or a news article or social media post in an instant. No delay. Instantaneous in real-time. Moreover, we are living in what some have described as “The Fourth Industrial Revolution”. We are living in the age of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.). I want you to know that despite having access to mass information, you will still need to base your decisions upon something. Hear what New York Times reporters Cade Metz and Karen Weise have to say regarding A.I.: “Today’s A.I. bots are based on complex mathematical systems that learn their skills by analyzing enormous amounts of digital data. They do not - and cannot – decide what is true and what is false. Sometimes, they just make stuff up, a phenomenon some A.I. researchers calls hallucinations. On one test, the hallucination rates of newer A.I. systems were as high as 79 percent.” My question to you tonight is: Where can you turn to in order to know The Truth? I invite you to turn to, and consider, the words of Peter in 2 Peter 1:16-21. A. The Necessity for Truth (Introduction) a. When you are faced with decisions, challenges, & trials that come into your life, on what foundation will you base your responses? i. Questions like: Whom should I marry? What job should I pursue? How shall I live? B. The Supremacy of God’s Truth (2 Peter 1:16-21) a. Peter is not following “cleverly devised myths”, but was an eyewitness of the power & glory of The Lord Jesus Christ. b. God’s testimony regarding His Son changed History for all-time. All of History, and time, centers around the birth, life, death and Resurrection of The Lord Jesus Christ. c. The Apostle Peter is saying that God’s “prophetic Word” (Holy Scripture) is “more sure”, because the origin of Scripture comes from the Triune God revealing Himself (2 Peter 1:20-21). C. The Freedom that God’s Truth Provides (John 8:31-32) a. Only God’s Truth can liberate you from the bondage of sin! i. You will face challenges, hardships and trials in your life! b. Are your life decisions based upon: i. Your feelings (Subjectivism or Relativism)? ii. What will advance your career and/or what’s in it for you alone (selfism; selfish desires)? c. Are your life decisions based upon the unchanging Truth of God’s Word? Conclusion: Make no mistake! The world will fight to tell you how to view reality (Truth = “Truth is that which corresponds to reality as perceived by God.” -R.C. Sproul). The world will tell you to view reality through a philosophy or -ism; e.g. Nihilism, Darwinism, Communism, Socialism, subjectivism, relativism, selfism, etc.) The only way that you can know the Truth for life is through the Person & Work of The Lord Jesus Christ as found in the Holy Scriptures. I pray that you come to know Him (The Truth incarnate: John 14:6).

Luke 6:27-36 - The Mark of a True Believer: Selfless, Sacrificial Love - Pastor Joshua Perez

Guest speaker at Chapel Grace Coalinga, California on May 18, 2025 The Mark of a True Believer: Selfless, Sacrificial Love Luke 6:27-36 Introduction: It is imperative that we keep Luke 6:17-18; 27 in mind as well as the immediate preceding context in Luke 6:12-26. Identifying the audience is vital to properly interpreting and applying the Sermon on the Plain (which is one and the same as the Sermon on the Mount found in the parallel account found in Matthew chapters 5-7). The primarily Jewish audience is crucial to understanding the text as it has eschatological implications as well. What is the Kingdom? The Kingdom of God (in the Messiah Jesus) is the rule and reign of God in His disciples in the here and now. His Sovereignty in our hearts to be one day extended out. Jesus was inaugurating His Kingdom on earth here in this passage. However, because of the Jewish rejection of their Messiah (The Lord Jesus; see John 1:11-13), the Kingdom was simply postponed. It was inaugurated at Jesus’ first coming, but one day will be consummated (see Acts 1:6; Romans chapters 9-11, especially 11:26; Revelation 20). Moreover, in God’s perfect Providence, the Messiah had to suffer and atone for our sins according to the Scriptures (1 Peter 1:11; Isaiah 52:13-53:12; Zechariah 12:10; 1 Corinthians 15:3-8).What is Love? Love is a selfless, sacrificial act of the will, accompanied by emotion, which leads to action on behalf of its object.A. The Divine Commands (To Love, do good, bless and pray) (Luke 6:27-28)1. V. 27: “To you who hear” (referring to the Jewish audience; Luke 6:17)B. The Divine Commands Fleshed Out (Luke 6:29-30)1. V. 29: See Romans 12:9-13 & Romans 12:14-21 also C. The Divine Commands Summarized (Luke 6:31)1. This is the clear golden rule D. The Warnings to Misinterpreting and Misapplying the Divine Commands (Luke 6:32-34)1. V. 32: Everyone loves people who love them! We are commanded by our Lord Jesus Christ to love our “enemies” (any hostile or estranged person (like a Gentile)). We are commanded to love everyone and not just people of our own ethnicity!2. V. 33: It’s easy to “do good” to those who “do good” to us. The test is when we do that to people who don’t “do good” to us!3. V. 34: Do you give to those who only give back to you?! Soul, are you sure that you aren’t enslaved to your “money god?” See Matthew 6:21. Soul! Are you characterized by your gracious, selfless, sacrificial giving (which is biblical love expressed and fleshed out)? Or are you characterized by your selfish, self-righteous money enslaved heart? Are you like the Pharisees of Luke 16:14?! My response to you is that of Jesus in Luke 6:24-26! For those who are rich, we also need to be humble and aware of what 1 Timothy 6:17-19 says.E. The Divine Commands Restated and Rewarded (Luke 6:35-36)1. These are the blessed rewards for those whom lives are characterized by this. Conclusion: Are you sure you are a true disciple (Christian; 2 Corinthians 13:5)? For those who profess to be Christians, read Luke 6:46-49. For those who are saved, I encourage you with Luke 6:35-36.
