How Your Money and Voice Influence Political Campaigns: An Elected Official's Perspective with Delia Garza

She is a  firefighter turned lawyer turned elected official. When running for county attorney she left nothing on the table. She resigned from her job to campaign, lived off early withdrawals from her fire pension, and found out she was pregnant with no health insurance. She won anyway. In this episode: What it costs a candidate personally to run for office on the local levelHow campaign fundraising actually works, including the call lists and contribution limitsWhy a $10 donation is worth more than $10How a strong fundraising number can scare opponents out of a race before they fileWhat candidates actually spend campaign money onHow to navigate your donation strategy How to support the people you elected once they're in officeThis is Part 2 of 3 in our Money, Power, and Policy series: Part 1 — A lobbyist's perspective Part 3 — A donor and community organizer's perspective About Delia Garza Delia Garza comes from a civically engaged family who inspired her to dedicate her career to public service. Following in her father's footsteps, she became one of the first Mexican-American women firefighters in the Austin Fire Department. As a member of Austin Firefighters Association Local 975, she represented firefighters during contract negotiations, was elected to the Local's executive board, and was the first woman appointed to chair its political action committee. She left the fire department in 2007 to pursue a law degree and later served as an Assistant Attorney General in the Child Support Division of the Office of the Attorney General. Garza was elected to the Austin City Council in 2014 and reelected in 2016, serving as Mayor Pro Tem until the end of her term in 2020. She was elected Travis County Attorney in 2020 on a platform of addressing systemic challenges in the criminal justice system, focusing on fact-based public safety reforms, ending the costly criminalization of mental illness and poverty, and addressing racial disparities in the Travis County justice system. She holds a bachelor's degree from Texas A&M University and a law degree from Gonzaga University School of Law. 🌐 https://www.traviscountytx.gov/county-attorney 📱 https://www.instagram.com/countyattorneygarza/ Talk Rich to Me is a production of Huntress Wealth. Understanding the Ambition Penalty with Stefanie O'Connell

Women are more educated and more ambitious than ever — and yet earnings growth for women stalls in their mid-30s while men's climbs for another decade. So what's actually going on? In this episode, Stephanie sits down with Stefanie O'Connell, author of The Ambition Penalty, to dig into the data-backed truth behind gender inequality at work. They dismantle some of the most pervasive myths women have been sold,  from "women don't negotiate" to imposter syndrome as a personal failing, and explore what's actually driving the gap and what evidence shows can close it. This conversation covers: Why women who negotiate are penalized more and rewarded less than men who do the sameHow the myth that women don't ask actually worsens gender bias and undermines pay transparency policiesThe "paradox of meritocracy" — why the most self-described fair organizations are often the most biasedWhat transparency and accountability policies actually workWhy collective thinking (not self-optimization) is the path forwardWhether you're navigating salary negotiations, building wealth, or trying to make sense of why the system feels stacked against you, this episode gives you the language, data, and framework to stop blaming yourself and start seeing the bigger picture. The Ambition Penalty is available now. About Stefanie O'Connell:  Stefanie O’Connell is an award-winning writer covering ambition, money and power with bylines in Slate, Bloomberg, CNBC, Glamour UK, Newsweek, USA Today and Business Insider.
