The Weak Capacitor That Kills Compressors in Oklahoma Heat

Give Use A Shout CO-HOST: Welcome back to Cool Talk. Dave, this one is a classic July service call. The homeowner says the outdoor unit hums, the fan may or may not start, the house is getting warmer, and somebody online says it is probably a capacitor. What is a capacitor doing in an air conditioner? DAVE: A capacitor is a small electrical part that helps a motor start and run correctly. In a typical outdoor unit, it supports the compressor and the fan motor. It is not exciting to look at. It is usually a meta I'm Dave Hartzell at Hartzell's Heat & Air in Kingfisher, Oklahoma. 45 years in the trade, Master HVAC license. Why Water Is in Your AC Drain Pan

Give Use A Shout CO-HOST: Welcome back to Cool Talk. I am sitting down with Dave Hartzell, owner of Hartzell's Heat and Air in Kingfisher, Oklahoma. Dave, it is the heat of the summer, the AC is running all day, and a homeowner walks in and sees water near the indoor unit. First question. Is water in the AC drain pan normal? DAVE: A little water moving through the drain system is normal. Water sitting in the emergency pan is not something I ignore. That pan is there to catch a problem before it becomes ceiling I'm Dave Hartzell at Hartzell's Heat & Air in Kingfisher, Oklahoma. 45 years in the trade, Master HVAC license. Why Is Your Water Heater Leaking

Give Use A Shout You walk into the garage and there is a puddle under your water heater, and your stomach drops. Here is the good news: not every leak means the tank is done. Where the water is coming from tells you almost everything. In this episode I walk you from the easy fixes, a loose connection up top or a dripping drain valve, through the T and P safety valve, down to the one that means it is time, a tank rusting through from the bottom. I also cover the simple maintenance that buys you years. Call 405-375-4822 or book at hartzellsheatair.com. Why Your Heat Pump Ices Up in Winter

Give Use A Shout Ever look outside on a cold morning and find your heat pump covered in frost or steaming away, and wonder if it is dying? In this Cool Talk I walk you through why the outdoor coil ices up in winter, what a normal defrost cycle looks and sounds like (a little steam, a whoosh, a few minutes of cooler air from the vents), and when it is nothing to worry about. Then I cover the real warning signs, a solid block of ice that never clears, ice on the fan, or a unit frozen for a day, and what a homeowner can safely check versus when to call a pro. Should You Cover Your Air Conditioner in Winter

Give Use A Shout Should you cover your outdoor AC unit for the winter? It feels responsible, but that condenser was built to live outside in all weather, and wrapping it up tight usually causes more trouble than it prevents. In this one I explain why a full cover traps moisture and invites rust, mold, and mice nesting in the warm dry space, plus the day somebody forgets and runs it while it is still wrapped. I cover the one reasonable option, a breathable top cover, and the big heat pump exception, since a heat pump runs all winter and must never be covered. Why Your Heater or AC Smells Like It's Burning

Give Use A Shout Why does my furnace or AC smell like burning? I walk you through the whole range, from harmless to urgent. That dusty smell the first time you run the heat in fall is usually just dust burning off the furnace, and it clears on its own. But a sharp electrical, hot plastic, fishy, or burning rubber smell is different, and any smoke means shut it off at the thermostat and breaker and call a pro. And a rotten egg gas smell is not a burning issue at all: get out and call the gas company or 911. Call 405-375-4822 or book at hartzellsheatair.com. Should You Close the Air Vents in Rooms You Don't Use

Give Use A Shout One of the most common money-saving tips you hear is to close the vents in rooms you do not use. It sounds obvious, but it is one of the biggest myths in my trade, and it can actually make your system work harder, run less efficiently, and even freeze up or wear out early. In this episode I explain how your HVAC is one balanced loop sized for the whole house, what closing vents really does to the pressure in your ducts, and the right way to control comfort room by room. Why Your Furnace Is Leaking Water

Give Use A Shout Found water under your furnace? Do not panic. A modern high-efficiency furnace makes water on purpose. It pulls so much heat out of the burn that the exhaust condenses, then drains out through a trap and a line. When you see water on the floor, that path is usually clogged, the condensate pump has quit, or a line came loose. And in summer, water at the furnace is often the AC coil sitting above it, not the furnace at all. An older standard furnace should not be making water, so that one is worth a call. I walk you through what you can safely check and when to bring in a pro. Call 405-375-4822 or book at hartzellsheatair.com.
