The Hidden Cost of Being “Good With People” (When You’re Actually an Introvert)

Send us Fan Mail People are often surprised when I tell them I'm an introvert. After all, I speak in front of audiences, facilitate workshops, support people through difficult experiences, and can carry on a conversation just fine. But being good with people is a skill. Being energized by people? That's wiring. In this episode, I explore the hidden cost that often exists behind competence, confidence, and connection. We dive into the differences between introversion and extroversion, the neuroscience behind how our brains process social interaction, and why some people leave a room feeling energized while others need a few hours (or a few days) to recover. Along the way, I share personal stories from my work, volunteering, and life experiences, including lessons I've learned about boundaries, energy management, and recognizing when my own battery is running low. This isn't an episode about introverts versus extroverts. It's about understanding ourselves better, understanding each other better, and learning how to create connection without unintentionally draining one another in the process. In This Episode: The difference between being socially skilled and being socially energized Why introversion isn't the same thing as being shy The neuroscience behind introversion and extroversion The invisible cost that often exists behind competence Why social interaction can feel draining even when it's meaningful The importance of recognizing your own limits and energy needs How introverts and extroverts can better understand and support one another Why connection doesn't need to be long to be meaningful Resources Mentioned: Free tools and resources: Bounce Back Blueprint Mindfulness Tools Self-Care Resources Stress-Management Strategies 🎁 Visit: https://transformativejourneys.ca/  ☕ Support the podcast: https://buymeacoffee.com/transformativejourneys    Threads of Life - If you or someone you know has been impacted by a workplace injury, occupational disease, or workplace fatality, please visit: https://www.threadsoflife.ca/  🎶 Music: “Back Roads” by Will Harrison, via Epidemic Sound. 🛑 Disclaimer: Johanna is not a therapist, just a human sharing lived experience. ✨ “I'm just Johanna – a fellow human being on my journey through this thing called life, and your guide on this transformative journey.”

High-Load Seasons: How to Carry a Lot Without Losing Yourself

Send us Fan Mail Some seasons of life feel like everything happens at once. Work gets busy. Responsibilities pile up. Unexpected challenges show up uninvited. Sleep gets compromised. Stress levels climb. And somehow, you're still expected to move through everyday life like things are normal. In this episode, Johanna shares her experience navigating a recent "high-load season" that included multiple volunteer presentations for Threads of Life, a demanding workload, podcast production deadlines, extensive travel, and the unexpected illness and loss of a beloved pet. But this isn't an episode about avoiding stress. Because sometimes stress isn't avoidable. Sometimes the commitments matter. Sometimes the responsibility matters. Sometimes the thing we're carrying is deeply meaningful to us. Instead, this episode explores how we can learn to carry those temporary heavy seasons differently so they don't take us down with them. Together, we'll explore: ✅ What a high-load season is (and what it isn't) ✅ The difference between temporary overload and chronic burnout ✅ Why meaning and purpose can change how we experience stress ✅ The role of Cognitive Appraisal Theory in how our brains interpret challenges ✅ How context-switching and "too many browser tabs" impact our capacity ✅ Practical strategies for navigating demanding seasons without burning out ✅ Decision management vs. time management ✅ Strategically lowering the bar without sacrificing what matters most ✅ Role containment and cognitive recovery ✅ Emotional containment versus emotional suppression ✅ "Rest in motion" and finding recovery in the middle of the chaos If life feels particularly heavy right now, this episode is a reminder that you don't have to navigate it perfectly. Sometimes the goal isn't to eliminate the load. Sometimes the goal is simply to figure out how to carry it without losing yourself. The Benefits of Boredom (And Why We’ve Come to Fear It)

Send us Fan Mail When was the last time you were actually bored… and didn’t immediately try to fix it? Not distracted bored. Not entertained in the background but bored. Not scrolling your phone while you wait for your coffee bored. Just… you and your thoughts. In this episode of Transformative Journeys, Johanna dives into something most of us think we understand - boredom - and completely reframes it. Because this isn’t really about boredom. It’s about what happens to our brain when we never give it space to think. After a very real (and slightly uncomfortable 😄) moment of realization in her shower, Johanna explores how modern habits - constant input, digital stimulation, and algorithm-driven content - are quietly reshaping how we think, feel, and process our lives. You’ll learn: Why boredom isn’t something to avoid - it’s something your brain actually needs What’s happening in your brain when you don’t give it quiet time How constant stimulation is impacting creativity, clarity, and emotional awareness The difference between active rest and passive numbing Why silence feels uncomfortable (and what that might actually mean) How dopamine-driven habits are keeping you stuck in shallow consumption Simple, realistic ways to reclaim space for deeper thinking This episode isn’t about cutting out technology or going off-grid. It’s about noticing how often we’re filling every empty moment - and what we might discover if we didn’t. Because boredom? It might just be the doorway to your most important insights. 💛 Resources & Links Free tools and resources: 👉 https://transformativejourneys.ca/ If you’d like to support the podcast: ☕ Buy Me a Coffee  👉 https://buymeacoffee.com/transformativejourneys 📲 Come Say Hi Follow me on Instagram: 👉 https://www.instagram.com/transformativejourneys.johanna/ 🎶 Music: “Back Roads” by Will Harrison, via Epidemic Sound. 🛑 Disclaimer: Johanna is not a therapist, just a human sharing lived experience.  ✨ “I’m just Johanna – a fellow human being on my journey through this thing called life, and your guide on this transformative journey.”

Mindfulness for People Who Don’t Have Time for Mindfulness

Send us Fan Mail (aka… Your Brain Already Knows How to Calm Down — You Just Don’t Use It Yet) Ever have one of those days where your brain feels like it’s on fire, your shoulders are somewhere near your earlobes, and someone suggests you should just “sit quietly and meditate for 30 minutes”? Yeah… same. 😄 In this episode, we’re breaking down one of the biggest myths around mindfulness - like that it requires time, silence, and a personality you don’t currently possess. Because the truth is… Your brain doesn’t need 30 minutes to start calming down. It needs a few seconds. Today, I’m diving into the neuroscience behind mindful micro-moments - the tiny, everyday pauses that can actually help regulate your nervous system, bring your brain back online, and build real resilience over time. No meditation cushion required. 🧠 What You’ll Learn in This Episode: Why mindfulness has a serious “branding problem” What’s actually happening in your brain when you feel overwhelmed The role of the amygdala (your guard dog) vs. your prefrontal cortex (your CEO) Why your brain thinks your inbox is a life-threatening event How just a few seconds of awareness can begin to calm your nervous system What the parasympathetic nervous system actually does (in plain English) How micro-moments help rewire your brain through neuroplasticity Why calm isn’t something you find - it’s something you practice 💭 Key Takeaway: You don’t need to escape your life to feel calmer. You need to learn how to meet it differently. 🔗 Resources & Links: 👉 Free tools & resources: https://transformativejourneys.ca/ (Bounce Back Blueprint, Mindfulness Tools, Stress Whisper Toolkit & more) ☕ Support the podcast: Buy Me a Coffee: https://buymeacoffee.com/transformativejourneys  ⚠️ Disclaimer: 🛑 Johanna is not a therapist, just a human sharing lived experience.  ✨ “I’m just Johanna – a fellow human being on my journey through this thing called life, and your guide on this transformative journey.” 🎶 Music: “Back Roads” by Will Harrison, via Epidemic Sound
