Episode 47: Faithful Movement | John Olson on Loss, Reinvention & Changing Your Story

What does resilience look like when life changes before you’re old enough to understand why? In Episode 47 of Resilient Now Podcast, Liliana Brown sits down with hypnotherapist and longtime entertainment professional John Olson, CHt, for a conversation about loss, storytelling, personal reinvention, and what it means to keep moving forward. John lost his father to lung cancer when he was just 10 years old. Growing up without his father during some of the most formative years of his life forced him to become independent early, learn to take care of himself, and begin figuring out who he wanted to become. For John, resilience can be summed up in two words: “faithful movement.” It means having faith that circumstances can change — and then taking whatever small action is available to move toward something better. Sometimes, he explains, that movement can be as simple as taking a breath and finding the next step. His early love of movies and storytelling eventually took him to Hollywood, where he spent roughly 20 years working in entertainment. But over time, John realized he wanted to do more than help people tell their stories — he wanted to help people change the stories they tell themselves. That realization led him to a new career in hypnotherapy. John and Liliana also explore what hypnosis is, the ways we naturally move through highly focused or relaxed states during everyday life, and how John uses hypnotherapy to help clients work toward personal change. And the conversation comes full circle when John shares what he is most grateful for today: simply waking up each morning. Now 45 — the same age his father was when he died — John sees every new day as an opportunity to make his life meaningful, loving, and impactful. This episode is about grief, growing up, changing direction, and remembering that resilience doesn’t always require one giant leap forward. Sometimes it begins with the next small movement. 🎧 Listen to the full episode at resilientnowpodcast.com and on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and YouTube. #ResilientNowPodcast #Resilience #JohnOlson #Hypnotherapy #PersonalGrowth #Grief #Loss #Reinvention #Storytelling #Mindset #Healing #FaithfulMovement #KeepMovingForward Welcome to the Resilient Now Podcast with Liliana Brown Hi, I’m Liliana Brown—host of Resilient Now. Episode 46: When Resilience Stops Serving You | Isabella Johnson on Escaping a Cult & Starting Over

What happens when the very qualities that make you resilient — loyalty, determination, endurance, and the ability to keep going — begin working against you? In Episode 46 of Resilient Now Podcast, Liliana Brown sits down with Bella Johnson, founder of The Cheer Theory, for a powerful conversation about starting over, recognizing when resilience is no longer serving you, and learning how to redirect your strength toward a healthier life. Bella had spent years building what she thought her future would look like. She was engaged, pursuing a doctoral degree in physical therapy, and moving forward with a clear plan for her life. Then everything changed. Her engagement ended, complications from surgery disrupted her path, and she eventually withdrew from her doctoral program. Looking for purpose and a way forward, Bella entered a fundraising role connected to a nonprofit organization. What initially felt meaningful gradually became something very different. Bella describes an increasingly controlling, cult-like environment where she worked extraordinarily long hours, felt pressure to constantly produce more, became isolated from family, and says she was discouraged from stepping away, practicing her faith, or questioning the system around her. And this is where Bella’s story takes on a deeper meaning. Resilience is not always about staying. Sometimes resilience means recognizing when your strength is being used to keep you in a harmful situation — and choosing to redirect that strength toward a life that serves you, elevates you, and allows you to grow. Bella eventually made the difficult decision to leave. She sold possessions, took side jobs, moved into a friend’s spare bedroom, and began rebuilding her life from the ground up. But something unexpected happened during that rebuilding process. The more Bella encouraged other people, the more she began rediscovering hope in herself. That realization eventually led to The Cheer Theory, built around a simple but powerful idea: sometimes another person believing in us can help us begin believing in ourselves again. In this conversation, Bella and Liliana explore the difference between resilience that helps us grow and resilience that simply teaches us to endure. They also talk about boundaries, identity, starting over, learning when to walk away, and refusing to let the past determine the rest of your story. Because resilience is not just about surviving what happened. It is also about deciding where your strength goes next. And as Bella reminds us, your current reality does not have to become the final version of your story.

Episode 45: The Age of Intelligence | Hugo Melgarejo & Coco Vilchis Resilience, Humanity & AI

Episode 45: The Age of Intelligence | Hugo Melgarejo & Coco Vilchis on Resilience, Humanity & AI What if intelligence isn't just about what you know—but how you respond to life? In Episode 45 of Resilient Now Podcast, Liliana Brown sits down with authors Hugo Melgarejo and Coco Vilchis their book, The Age of Intelligence, and why our uniquely human forms of intelligence may matter more than ever in the age of artificial intelligence. Hugo and Coco explore emotional, spiritual, social, creative and other forms of intelligence—and how strengthening them can help us navigate change, make better decisions, connect with others and become more resilient. Their goal isn't to reject AI, but to use it as a tool while continuing to develop the human qualities technology cannot replace. Pasted text Hugo also shares a deeply personal story about his family and someone close to them who has been battling stage-four cancer. That experience helped shape his definition of resilience: Resilience isn't necessarily becoming the person you were before. Sometimes life changes you permanently. It's about moving forward and becoming the person you need to be next. Pasted text The conversation also explores self-awareness, identifying our strengths and weaknesses, getting off "automatic pilot," using our time intentionally, and learning to use AI as a thought partner rather than something to fear. Pasted text Pasted text The Age of Intelligence is available in English and Spanish. Pasted text Until next time, stay resilient.

Episode 44: When Survival Stops Serving You | Author Joseph Okoroji on Resilience & Growth

What happens when the habits that helped you survive a difficult chapter no longer serve the life you’re living today? In Episode 44 of Resilient Now Podcast, host Liliana Brown sits down with author Joseph Okoroji for a conversation about resilience, survival, personal growth, and learning when it’s time to change. Joseph, author of A Mark in the Sand, shares why resilience can sometimes look like stubbornness—the willingness to keep moving forward despite the obstacles in front of you. But resilience, he explains, also requires something else: the willingness to learn, adapt, and become a different version of yourself. One of the most powerful ideas in the conversation is that survival can create habits that are necessary during difficult times but may work against us once our circumstances change. A scarcity mindset, emotional armor, or simply staying in survival mode can become our default long after the original struggle has passed. Joseph puts it simply: “Your past is your teacher, not your leader.” Liliana and Joseph also talk about bringing resilience into everyday life through small, intentional actions—from putting your sneakers by the door when you want to exercise to deliberately making time for the people and goals that matter. Because moving forward doesn’t require perfection. Sometimes, it simply requires doing something. And when Liliana asks Joseph what he is most grateful for right now, his answer brings the conversation back to something beautifully simple: being able to wake up in the morning. 🎙️ Resilient Now Podcast shares real stories and conversations to remind you that whatever you’re facing, you don’t have to feel alone. Until next time, stay resilient.

Episode 43: Meet Matt | A Mother’s Journey Through Loss with Rebecca Adams

In this deeply honest episode of Resilient Now, mom and author Rebecca Adams opens her heart and shares the story of her son, Matt—a spirited, empathetic teenager who loved football, cared deeply about others, and struggled with depression. At just 16 years old, Matt died by suicide, forever changing Rebecca and her family’s lives. Rebecca takes us inside the reality of grief: the moments when getting through the next minute is enough, the importance of asking for help, allowing yourself to feel the sadness, and finding a way to keep moving forward while carrying the love and memory of the person you lost. She also shares how she found purpose within an unimaginable tragedy. Rather than allowing Matt’s death to be the end of his story, Rebecca has carried his spirit forward by helping others—through the Matt Hallsfeld Memorial Fund, suicide-prevention programs for young people, her book Matt Was Here, and her work supporting other bereaved parents. This is not simply a conversation about loss. It is about love, survival, purpose, and finding a way to create something meaningful from even the most painful chapters of our lives. Moving forward doesn’t mean leaving the person you love behind. If you are grieving, supporting someone who is, or simply trying to find your way through something that has changed your life, Rebecca’s honest words may remind you that you don’t have to do it alone—and sometimes resilience means taking life one minute at a time.

Episode 42: Dr. David Cerling | You Can Do Hard Things: Resilience, Service & Second Chances

What does it mean to keep serving others when you no longer have to? In this episode of Resilient Now, Liliana Brown sits down with Dr. David Cerling, a retired clinical psychologist with approximately 40 years of experience who continues to dedicate his time to working with incarcerated men. After years of conducting forensic evaluations and witnessing firsthand the mental health challenges within the criminal justice system, Dr. Cerling began volunteering in a correctional facility. Today, he continues teaching classes—including a course on building resilience—and offering his experience, compassion, and time to people working to change their lives. Dr. Cerling shares an important message about resilience: “You can do hard things.” He discusses the role that childhood trauma can play in people's lives, the additional trauma that can occur during incarceration, and why understanding someone's past doesn't mean ignoring their actions—it can help us better understand the human being behind them. He also shares why his faith calls him to serve, the transformation he has witnessed in some of the men he's worked with, and how this work has changed him in return. This conversation is a reminder that our hardest chapters don't necessarily have to be our last—and that resilience, compassion, purpose, and service can create a ripple effect far beyond ourselves. 🎧 Listen to Episode 42 of Resilient Now and remember: You can do hard things.

Episode 41: Meet Becky Cerling Powers | Resilience Comes From Reliance-Faith & Homeschooling

In Episode 41 of Resilient Now, Liliana Brown sits down with author, journalist, mother, grandmother, and homeschooling pioneer Becky Cerling Powers for a conversation about faith, family, caregiving, and finding strength during overwhelming seasons of life. What happens when life asks you to carry more than you ever expected? Meet Becky Cerling Powers, and you’ll discover an amazing story of resilience on so many levels. Becky is a phenomenal example of what it looks like to take one resilient action after another—especially when life doesn’t go as planned. Becky shares what happened after her family moved to the El Paso area in the 1980s and took a 40% cut in income. At the same time, she was homeschooling three children, helping care for her father-in-law as his Alzheimer’s disease progressed, supporting her mother-in-law—who, yes, lived to be 102 years old—and navigating stretches when her husband’s work took him away from home. And then there was homeschooling. Becky takes us inside the early days of homeschooling in Texas, when families like hers faced tremendous uncertainty and became part of a larger legal fight over the right to educate their children at home. Years later, Becky can look back and see what came from those difficult seasons. Her children grew up, pursued higher education, and built careers of their own. Meanwhile, Becky’s experiences as a mother and homeschooler became part of her own work as a journalist and writer. Becky also shares the remarkable story behind her book, A Forbidden Orphanage Outside the Forbidden City, and how researching the life of her relative Laura Richards—who cared for children in China through war, famine, and upheaval—deepened Becky’s own understanding of resilience. Through it all, Becky returns to one simple and powerful idea: “Resilience comes from reliance.” For Becky, that reliance is rooted in her faith in God. This is an episode about homeschooling, caregiving, family, faith, and what happens when life doesn’t go according to plan. Most of all, it’s a reminder that resilience doesn’t always mean carrying everything by yourself. Sometimes resilience means knowing what—and who—you can rely on. Stay resilient now.
