Vayera: Table, Encounter, Altar — How to Be Empty and Fully Alive

In this episode of Underneath the Underneath, Yocheved traces three stations of sacrifice woven through Parshat Vayera — the table, the encounter, and the altar — as a map for how we meet ourselves, our lives, and the divine. At the table, Avraham is fully himself. Chesed unadulterated, milk and not wine, running toward his guests at ninety-nine. The korban that doesn't feel like one. In the encounter, something else is asked. At Sodom, he fights — relentlessly, fiercely, all the way to the edge of what advocacy can do — and then opens his hand. With Hagar, he goes silent. The same man who argued for strangers, wordless for his own son. Two faces of wrestling. Two kinds of sacrifice. And then the altar. The Akeidah. Where there is no more self to amplify or suppress. Where, as the Zohar says, water is included in fire and fire in water. Where bittul metzius — the dissolution of being itself — becomes the only offering left. Avraham came back down the mountain. We always do. But we never come back the same. Drawing on the Shelah HaKadosh, Rabbeinu Bachya, and Chassidic teachings on bittul — and woven through with the question that lives in every life right now — this episode asks: where are you? And what does it mean to be empty and fully alive? Lech Lecha: Bread of Shame, Tardemah, and What Your Soul Came Down to Earn

In this episode of Underneath the Underneath, Yocheved opens Parshat Lech Lecha through an unexpected door: the soul's dignity instinct. Before the command to go, before the covenant, before the stars — there is a soul basking in divine light it didn't earn. And the shame of that unearned receiving is exactly why it descends. Drawing on the Meor Einayim, Rashi, Bereshit Rabbah, and Philo of Alexandria — and weaving in Gendlin's concept of the murky — this episode traces the full arc of Lech Lecha: from נהמא דכיסופא (bread of shame), through the descent into earthliness and the accumulation of small unknowns, into the תרדמה — the deep prophetic sleep that falls on Avram at the moment the brit is sealed. The darkness and the dread are not interrupting the covenant. They are the condition for it. What does it mean that God doesn't give Avram something — but enters into something with him? What shifts when the question moves from have I earned this to are we in this together? And what does the tardemah have to teach us about the kind of emptying that makes prophecy — and co-creation — possible? This one is for anyone who has ever felt unworthy of the light they're receiving. Your soul didn't come down to bask. It came down to earn. And the earning doesn't look like achievement. Sometimes it looks like the deepest sleep. Noach: Babel — The Tower, the Tongue, and the Heart

In this episode of Underneath the Underneath, Yocheved enters Parshat Noach through an unexpected door: the Tower of Babel. A generation survives the flood and rebuilds. They are unified, sophisticated, capable — one language, one speech. And yet something is hollow at the center. The Torah says safa echat, one lip — not lashon echat, one tongue. The Mei Hashiloach asks why, and his answer opens something deep: the holy tongue isn't defined by the language you speak. It's defined by whether your speech emerges from the root of life in your heart. Without that root, even sacred language becomes bird chirping. Drawing on the Mei Hashiloach, the Kli Yakar, and the Baal Shem Tov — and weaving in the trauma of collective rebuilding and the question of what we are building now — this episode traces the long road from the lip to the heart. From Babel to Sinai. From coordination without interiority to k'ish echad b'lev echad — one people, one heart. And the Baal Shem Tov's instruction to his students: pray even for the chirping bird. Even disconnected speech has letters inside it. The root is never gone — only buried. Bereshit: What Life Is Showing Me — The Garden, the Exile, and the Call That Never Stops

In this episode of Underneath the Underneath, Yocheved opens a new Torah cycle with a question that has been echoing since the beginning: Ayeka. Where are you? Drawing on Eicha Rabbah, the Tzror HaMor, and Rebbe Nachman — and weaving in a personal thread from a recent silent retreat — this episode traces the arc of the divine-human relationship from the garden to exile to the call that never stops. What is the sin of hiding? Where does the distance between us and the divine actually come from? And what does it mean that our hiding doesn't silence the call — it intensifies it? We're also sitting on the eve of October 7th. Three years in. Still in the process. What is life showing you right now? Can you receive it? Sukkot: Walking After You in the Wilderness — On Uncertainty, Faith, and Joy

In this episode of Underneath the Underneath, Yocheved steps into Sukkot still carrying the warmth of Yom Kippur — and finds in the humble, temporary structure of the sukkah a map for one of the deepest questions of human life: how do we walk through uncertainty? Drawing on the Zohar's teaching that the sukkah is the shade of faith, the Izhbitzer on the schach as divine covering, and Rebbe Nachman's radical teaching that God created the world for people who can find faith through the confusion — this episode traces a trifecta alive in every sukkah: uncertainty, faith, and joy. Not joy as the overriding of difficulty. Joy as deep attunement with the rightness of life as it is. The joy that emerges when we can hold our uncertainty in faith. The joy of following the divine into the wilderness — not because we have it figured out, but because we're in love. We walked after You in the wilderness. That's the pillow talk of God and the Jewish people. And it's the invitation of Sukkot. Shabbat Shuva and Yom Kippur: What the Year Left in You

In this episode of Underneath the Underneath, Yocheved enters Shabbat Shuva — the Shabbat suspended between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur — and finds inside the opening verses of Ha'azinu a teaching that reframes the entire season. Drawing on the Meor Einayim of Reb Menachem Nachum of Chernobyl, this episode traces the movement of the life-force through a person — how it rushes in, returns to its source, and leaves behind a reshima: an impression, a recognition, a trace. And it is precisely this recognition — already written on your face, already carried in your body — that draws the life-force back, with more. Yom Kippur is not about manufacturing the right feeling or producing the perfect confession. It's about reading what's already there. The year already wrote it. The impression is already on your face. What did this year leave in you? That's the question to carry into Kol Nidrei. Ki Tavo and Elul: Hasket — The Word That Holds Two Medicines

In this episode of Underneath the Underneath, Yocheved enters Parshat Ki Tavo and orients to a single word that carries layers of spiritual technology. Hasket. Usually translated as “hearken” or “take heed” — a doubling of the command to listen. But the Midrash reads it differently. Has: become silent. Katu: shatter. Two medicines hidden in one word. The path to becoming a people, to truly hearing the words of Torah, to entering the land — it begins here. Drawing on the Midrash, the story of Rabbi Akiva, and the medicine of Elul, Yocheved traces two kinds of silence — the has that arises from within, and the shtok that comes from beyond — and what each one prepares us for. The shofar as amniotic fluid. The shattering as birth. The month of Elul as the space where silence and shattering learn to live together. Has. Then katu. Silence first. Then something breaks. And from the breaking — an am. A people. A self that can finally hear. Ki Tetzei and Elul: The God of the Breast — Eil Sha-dai and the Field of Return

In this episode of Underneath the Underneath, Yocheved arrives at Parshat Ki Tetzei with a chidush that stops everything: the Hebrew root of sadeh — field — is the same as Shadai. Eil Shadai. The God of the breast. The king in the field, the classic Elul teaching, turns out to be more than a metaphor for accessibility. The field is the place of the nurturing God — the divine who feeds, who sustains, who knows exactly when you are full and says die*, enough. Not abandonment. Deep attunement.* Drawing on the thirteen attributes of mercy, four mitzvot from Ki Tetzei, and the arc from Elul into Rosh Hashana, Yocheved traces what it means to be held by Eil Shadai before standing before Havayah. The womb before the throne. The mother before the king. The milk is already flowing. The field is already receiving. The practice is not feeling it — it’s turning toward what already is.
