When In Romans Part 17, Pastor John Kupitz

This sermon explores what sin truly is at its core: not merely rule-breaking, but reality-breaking. Sin is living in opposition to the truth of how God created the universe to function. When we sin, we're essentially saying to reality, "I don't like you, and I'm going to live as if you don't exist." Through the story of Joseph's cellmates—the cupbearer and the baker—we see how God deals with sin: either it must be killed or banished through sacrifice. This foreshadows Christ, who became both the bread (His body) and the cup (His blood) to deal with our sin once and for all. As Christians under grace, we're not called to simply avoid sin (the bare minimum), but to actively pursue righteousness, going far beyond the Ten Commandments toward radical love, generosity, and truth-telling.

When In Romans Part 16, Pastor Chris Sherwood

This sermon explores Romans 6:15-23, focusing on the transformative reality of our new identity in Christ. We examine Paul's powerful slavery metaphor—how we've been freed from slavery to sin and have become slaves to righteousness. This isn't just theological theory; it has radical implications for our daily spiritual life. The central message is clear: sanctification requires both our intentional partnership and God's miraculous power. We cannot grow in holiness through human effort alone, yet God calls us to actively choose righteousness from the heart. This balance—100% our responsibility and 100% God's work—is essential for authentic Christian living.

When In Romans Part 15, Pastor Chris Sherwood

This exploration of Romans 6 reveals a profound truth about our spiritual identity: we are no longer slaves to sin. The message draws a striking parallel between financial debt and spiritual bondage, reminding us that just as debt makes us servants to lenders, sin once held us in captivity. But through union with Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection, that old enslaved self has been crucified. The sermon walks us through Paul's logical argument that our baptism into Christ isn't merely a symbolic ritual, but represents our complete immersion into Jesus - in heart, mind, spirit, and strength. We died with Him to sin, were buried with Him, and now live in resurrection power. This means sin no longer has mastery over us. The practical application is transformative: when temptation comes knocking like an unwanted solicitor with lies and justifications, we have the freedom to turn away. Instead of making preparations for sin, we can present ourselves to God as instruments of righteousness. The Holy Spirit convicts us in those 0.4-second moments when our minds begin planning how to indulge temptation, giving us the opportunity to choose connection with God over the empty promises of sin. Grace isn't a license to keep sinning - it's the power that breaks sin's hold and opens the door for righteous living.
