    Why most BESS projects underperform | Stephan Rohr

His path into batteries started with mechanical engineering at TUM, a short stint in management consulting on two early battery projects in 2012 and 2013, and then a PhD at the Institute of Automotive Technology from 2014 to 2018, where he built a 200 kWh grid storage system module by module and designed its cooling system himself. Back then a kilowatt hour cost 1,200 to 1,500 euros and the battery hall at Intersolar was empty. Today TWAICE monitors around 130 utility scale BESS projects and more than 20 GWh across Europe, the US, Chile and Australia, including a recently connected 2.7 GWh site in the US. In this episode of "BESSt of BESS" we talk about why almost everything the industry believes about battery degradation is pointing at the wrong problem. Stephan walks us through the EPRI incident data his team worked with, where only 10 percent of storage incidents originate in the cell while 45 percent come from controls and another 45 percent from balance of plant, and explains why systems that look perfectly available often deliver just 92 percent of their usable energy, which is hundreds of thousands of euros per year on a merchant asset and an asymmetric penalty risk under a tolling agreement. We cover what independent analytics actually does during commissioning and site acceptance, how continuous warranty tracking holds integrators accountable when every LTSA looks different, why insurers are starting to treat an independent analytics layer as a risk mitigation measure, what the Powin bankruptcy did to owners with stranded assets in the US, and what sodium ion cells and their flat open circuit voltage curve will change for state of charge estimation. At the end Stephan places his bet on how much utility scale storage Germany will actually have online on 31 December 2030, and his number sits well above what the registered project pipeline suggests today.
