I Spent My Whole Life Achieving the Wrong Goal

What happens when you've done everything right and the successful life you built still feels empty? In this episode of UnCultured, Lifestyle Design Coach and Corporate Culture Consultant Shauna K. Henson tells the story of becoming an electrical engineer, graduating with honors, receiving multiple job offers, building a prestigious career—and eventually walking away from it without knowing what she would do next.Long before quitting, Shauna had learned to overachieve. She slept inside the engineering building during finals. She pushed through stress-related health problems. She fell asleep behind the wheel after staying awake studying. She became president of organizations, earned scholarships, entered engineering honor societies, and trained herself to believe that extraordinary sacrifice was simply part of extraordinary achievement. Then she carried that same achievement framework into corporate America.Until she finally reached the career she had spent years building and realized:It felt empty. She didn't immediately know her purpose. She didn't have another career waiting. She didn't have entrepreneurial examples around her.She simply knew the life she was sitting inside could not be the end of her story.Nearly twenty years later, that decision has led to entrepreneurship, writing, television appearances, speaking, corporate consulting, personal branding, lifestyle design, international living, faith, and the body of work that eventually became UnCultured. And Shauna's experience reflects a much larger conversation happening around work in 2026.The State of Career Change Report found that among more than 11,500 active career changers, 73% said work negatively affected their overall life satisfaction, 48% rarely or never felt fulfilled by their work, and 40% identified values or purpose misalignment as a reason for wanting change. Being Good at Your Job Might Be Keeping You Stuck

You are good at your job.Probably exceptionally good. You're the person your boss trusts, your team depends on, and your company makes exceptions to keep. You've been promoted, recognized, relied upon, and repeatedly proven that you can handle difficult things. So when was the last time you were actually challenged? In this episode of UnCultured, Lifestyle Design Coach and Corporate Culture Consultant Shauna K. Henson explores the critical difference between doing work that is hard and pursuing something that genuinely challenges you.Because they are not the same experience.Hard work can require enormous effort while leaving you depleted, unsupported, and exactly where you started.A challenge stretches your capacity. It asks you to speak up, use your gifts more fully, pursue an idea, ask for resources, build something new, develop your voice, or move closer to the person you know you are capable of becoming. And this distinction matters right now.Gallup's 2026 workplace data shows only 31% of employees in the U.S. and Canada are engaged at work, while 50% report significant daily stress. Globally, only 20% of employees are engaged. (Gallup.com)Being stressed at work is not evidence that you're growing.Being overwhelmed isn't professional development.Being the person who can somehow make an under-resourced project work isn't necessarily a compliment.Sometimes your greatest career challenge is admitting:I've already mastered what this environment is asking from me.In this episode:Hard work versus challenging workWhy high performers become professionally stuckBeing indispensable at workCareer stagnation after years of successOutgrowing your jobStrengths and your zone of geniusCorporate culture and employee engagementWhy lack of resources creates unnecessary difficultyAsking for support at workSpeaking up when you're under-challengedOutsourcing weaknesses instead of obsessively fixing themPersonal branding and professional identityFinding work that uses your fullest capacityCareer transitions after 10–20 yearsAuthenticity in the workplaceBuilding work around your strengthsKnowing when your job has become too small for youIf you have spent years proving that you can handle hard things, this episode will challenge you to ask a different question:What would happen if you stopped proving how much difficulty you can tolerate and started choosing experiences that actually help you grow? Please visit my website for more information: https://www.shaunahenson.com▶️Learn more about the show: https://www.shaunahenson.com/show
