    Every pastor knows ministry costs you something. Dr. Helen Roseveare’s story takes that cost to a level most of us can barely imagine. Helen was a brilliant British doctor who left a comfortable life to build hospitals in the Congo. But in 1964, civil war turned her mission into a nightmare. Rebel forces seized her hospital, and for five agonizing months she was held captive, beaten, and brutally assaulted. When she finally escaped to England, the trauma was overwhelming. She did not just ask God, “Why?” She asked the question many wounded leaders ask: “Was it worth it?” And in the silence of recovery, she sensed God asking her a piercing question: “Can you thank me for trusting you with this experience, even if I never tell you why?” Most people would have stepped away from ministry right there. But in 1966, Helen returned to the Congo to help rebuild what had been destroyed. She came to see that her trauma actually deepened her compassion for a deeply wounded people.     Zachary Abblitt was eighteen years old, and his life was wide open. He was a runner, a surfer, a swimmer, a musician. Then one dive into shallow water changed everything. He hit his head. In an instant, he was paralyzed. His C5 and C6 vertebrae were fractured. He had no feeling below his neck. By every human measure, this was the kind of moment that should have crushed his hope. But one week later, from a hospital bed, Zachary said something no one expected: “I’m really excited to see where the Lord is going to take me.” Zachary later said his paralysis did not feel like a trial — because to him, a trial was a circumstance with no hope.
