Israel and Germany, Reconciliation and Memory

Prof. Roni Stauber, Director of the Goldstein-Goren Diaspora Research Center, Director of the Diploma Program in Archival and Information Science Our guest in this new episode is Prof. Roni Stauber. He is an Israeli historian of moden Jewish history, an associate professor in the Department of Jewish History at Tel Aviv University, a member of the Yad Vashem Scientific Committee, head of the Goldstein-Goren Center for Diaspora Studies, and head of the Certificate Program in Archival and Information Studies. Stauber’s main field is the study of collective memory. He deals with the interplay between politics and diplomacy, and collective memory and historiography with a focus on the formation of Holocaust consciousness in Israel and around the world. In the past decade, his research has focused primarily on relations between Israel and West Germany in the 1950s and 1960s. His book 'The Lesson for a Generation' analyzed the positions that took shape in public thought in Israel in the 1950s regarding the issue of the "Jewish response" to the Holocaust. The book, which won the "Mordechai Ish-Shalom Prize in the History of the Land of Israel" in 2002, discusses the connection between the general worldview of figures and movements who took part in public discourse in Israel in the early years of the state, and their attitude to the ways in which the Jewish public responded during the Holocaust. An English version of the book was published after changes and adjustments under the title: The Holocaust in Israeli Public Debate in the 1950s, Ideology and Memory. One of the central issues discussed in these books is the complex attitude of the political establishment in Israel to the memory of the Holocaust. On the one hand, the state emphasized the connection between the Holocaust and the revival; on the other hand, the power of the traumatic memory, which affected both society and the political establishment, clashed with the ideology of "statehood" and the desire to establish a "normal" society concerned with security, creativity, and construction. The validity of the claim regarding the complex attitude of the Israeli establishment to the memory of the Holocaust Stauber examined in his research on Israeli-German relations in the years 1953–1965. His latest book, Diplomacy in the Shadow of Memory: Israel and West Germany, 1953–1965, was published in 2023 and an English edition is forthcoming. A series of articles by him, discussing various aspects of these relations, were published in Hebrew, English and German journals. His research is based on extensive archival material, some of which has only been uncovered in recent years in archives in Israel, Germany, the United States and the United Kingdom. Building Cultural Bridges to the Iranian People

Hanna Jahanforooz, Alliance Center for Iranian Studies, Tel Aviv University Our guest is the Tehran-born analyst, researcher, and musician Hanna Jahanforooz. She describes herself as ‘an Iranian cultural researcher, lecturer, and world music singer.’ She immigrated to Israel at the age of 12 following the Islamic Revolution. She holds a Master's degree in Middle Eastern and African Studies from Tel Aviv University, and frequently appears in the media and on various stages to analyze society, culture, and the status of women in Iran. Her life's mission is to separate the brutal regime from the people and the glorious culture in the Israeli mind. ‘Iran is a 2,500-year-old cultural treasure. My goal in music and research is to be a bridge,’ she says. In her research, she reveals the painful sides of Iran that the media doesn't show: such as street children who help support their families by working on the streets, and the wrestlers, the folk cultural heroes, who came out against the regime." How Can AI Help us Better Understand our History?

Our guest is Nachum Dershowitz, an American-born Israeli scholar and Professor Emeritus of Computer Science and AI at TAU. He is internationally renowned for foundational contributions to theoretical computer science, including the Dershowitz–Manna ordering and the recursive path ordering—both widely used to prove that computational processes eventually terminate rather than run indefinitely. His research spans a wide range of fields, including logic, artificial intelligence, natural language understanding, calendar algorithms, and the application of computational methods to medicine, archeology, and the humanities. In recent years, Dershowitz has been made major contributions to the digitization and study of Hebrew manuscripts, including the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Cairo Genizah (a vast repository of discarded medieval Hebrew texts). By applying AI-driven methods to manuscript images, his work helps decipher texts, reconstruct fragmented documents, and recover forgotten histories and cultural treasures. Unlocking the Immune System

Our guest in this new episode is an academic super star: Prof. Carmit Levy who is the Chair of the Department of Human Molecular Genetics & Biochemistry at the Gray Faculty of Medicine. Levy is a renowned researcher in the area of skin cancer. Prof. Levy and her team recently made a groundbreaking discovery involving a protein called Ly6a, which acts as a “brake” on the immune system. This protein, expressed both after UV exposure and in tumors, prevents immune cells from attacking cancer effectively. In experimental studies, the team showed that blocking Ly6a with a specific antibody reactivated the immune response, causing tumors to shrink—even in cases resistant to existing immunotherapies. This research, published in Nature Communications, not only advances our understanding of the immune system but also points toward entirely new treatment possibilities. Join us as we explore with Prof. Levy how this discovery was made, its future potential, and what it means for the fight against cancer. __________________ Tel Aviv 360, Israel's largest and most diverse podcast about research and innovation • Tel Aviv 360 official website ◄ https://360tau.com • Tel Aviv 360 in Instagram ◄ https://360tau.com/Instagram • Tel Aviv 360 in Facebook ◄ https://360tau.com/Facebook • Tel Aviv 360 in WhatsApp (Silent group) ◄ https://360tau.com/WhatsApp • Tel Aviv 360 in Spotify ◄ https://360tau.com/Spotify
