A Night in Medieval England: Relaxing History for Sleep

What was a night like in medieval England? Settle into a slow, quiet journey from dusk to dawn, through curfew bells, candlelight, straw bedding and the watchmen's rounds. Visit a village house, a walled town, a monastery and a lord's hall, listening as the medieval night unfolds. Explore medieval daily life after dark: how people lit their homes, kept warm, prepared for bed and found comfort through prayers, neighbours and stories. The narration also considers the much-discussed idea of a first sleep and a second sleep, explaining what the evidence suggests and why some historians disagree. Evidence spans many centuries and is often patchy. Throughout this gentle history for sleep, the narration distinguishes what is well supported from what remains uncertain. Nothing is graphic or hurried, and you do not need to stay awake. The night will still be here whenever you drift off. 00:00:00: Chapter 1: Dusk | 1.1 Sunset00:02:38: 1.2 The last chores00:04:05: 1.3 Banking the fire00:05:34: 1.4 The last meal00:07:04: 1.5 Shutting the shutters00:08:30: 1.6 Animals brought in00:10:06: 1.7 The sky going dark00:11:36: Chapter 2: The curfew bell | 2.1 The tradition of William00:13:08: 2.2 Fire in a timber town00:14:35: 2.3 Covering the fire00:16:04: 2.4 Rules and tradition00:17:36: 2.5 The word curfew00:18:53: 2.6 A sound across a town00:20:13: 2.7 How far the rule reached00:21:35: Chapter 3: Light | 3.1 The hearth00:23:00: 3.2 Tallow candles00:24:37: 3.3 Beeswax for the rich00:25:54: 3.4 Rushlights00:27:29: 3.5 Light and cost00:28:47: 3.6 Moonlight00:30:13: 3.7 Why people went to bed early00:31:27: Chapter 4: The bed | 4.1 Straw and bedding00:32:51: 4.2 Sharing beds00:34:12: 4.3 Winter cold00:35:34: 4.4 Curtained beds00:36:57: 4.5 Chests and linen00:38:18: 4.6 A pillow and a bolster00:39:36: 4.7 The sound of a sleeping house00:40:56: Chapter 5: The watch | 5.1 The statute of 128500:42:22: 5.2 Sunset to sunrise00:43:44: 5.3 The gates00:45:08: 5.4 Challenging strangers00:46:29: 5.5 Neighbours on watch00:47:52: 5.6 The constable00:49:14: 5.7 A quiet round00:50:42: Chapter 6: The monastery wakes | 6.1 The Rule's night office00:52:05: 6.2 The eighth hour00:53:28: 6.3 Rising from bed00:54:48: 6.4 Psalms in the dark00:56:09: 6.5 Winter and summer00:57:30: 6.6 Candles in choir00:58:51: 6.7 Back to bed, or on to dawn01:00:06: Chapter 7: Between sleeps | 7.1 The historian's idea01:01:40: 7.2 The phrase first sleep01:03:08: 7.3 Prayers for the night01:04:38: 7.4 What the evidence is01:06:10: 7.5 Why some historians disagree01:07:52: 7.6 What we can say01:09:16: 7.7 A pause that is real or not01:10:33: Chapter 8: The sounds and skies | 8.1 Stars without lights01:11:52: 8.2 The moon's calendar01:13:13: 8.3 Animal sounds01:14:39: 8.4 Weather on the roof01:16:07: 8.5 Night work01:17:25: 8.6 A midwife called out01:18:58: 8.7 Someone ill01:20:20: Chapter 9: Fears and comforts | 9.1 Prayers01:21:54: 9.2 Charms and customs01:23:25: 9.3 A night-time saint01:24:48: 9.4 A hymn for the end of the day01:26:16: 9.5 Fire as comfort01:27:41: 9.6 Neighbours01:29:15: 9.7 Telling stories01:30:38: Chapter 10: Before dawn | 10.1 The first cockerel01:32:06: 10.2 The hearth rekindled01:33:31: 10.3 The church bell01:34:57: 10.4 Water and bread01:36:20: 10.5 Workers rising01:37:38: 10.6 The light returns01:39:05: 10.7 Back to tonight #medievalEngland #medievalhistory #historyforsleep #relaxinghistory #bedtimelistening #medievaldailylife #medievalnight #curfewbells #medievallighting #tallowcandles #rushlights #medievalbedding #nightwatchmen #monasticlife #nightprayers #mediev... Conspiracies That Sound Fake But Are Real

Seventy true stories of things people were told could not be real, until a document, a court ruling, or an official admission showed they were. This is a second night of them: balloons with cameras, a ship that raised a submarine, a fuel additive, a light bulb pact, an office that hunted for psychics, and the quiet moment each secret finally came out. The rule is strict. A claim is included only if a primary record confirms the core of it, and for every story, the narration says plainly what was confirmed and what is still disputed or was never proven. Nothing here is graphic and nothing is about today's politics. These are mostly quiet stories made of paper. You do not need to follow every detail. If you drift off somewhere in the middle, they will still be here in the morning. Chapter 1: Secrets brought to the surface Chapter 2: Tests on ordinary cities Chapter 3: Agreements behind closed doors Chapter 4: What companies knew Chapter 5: Numbers that were never true Chapter 6: Operations abroad, acknowledged later Chapter 7: Spycraft that was real Chapter 8: Stories told to cover the truth Chapter 9: Plans that stayed on paper Chapter 10: The government looks at itself This video is for relaxation and general interest, not medical, legal, or personal advice. Sources are primary records: declassified documents, committee reports, court rulings, and official admissions. #conspiracies #realstories #declassifieddocuments #spycraft #submarine #lightbulbpact #secrets #courtrulings See show notes: https://inlet.fm/absolute-sleep/episodes/6ad6da1e294953c22ee36580 Learn more about your ad choices.
