The world is our home and it is up to us to explore it as we wish to, even though it meaning we will be away from family and friends for some time, and more often, extended periods of time. Loneliness can creep in like a close friend, and we find ourselves lost in the middle of the unfamiliar. This is a safe space to build community and bring people from different places together with a common goal, connection and belonging.

Jaeda Khalilifar– “I see a bright future for the world.”

Meet Jaeda, her beautiful smile and high energy caught my attention since the first time we met! She is a first generation Canadian, being half Persian half Filipino! With a background in literature and languages combined with her adventurous personality, the idea of having a teaching job abroad expanded in her mind, even though she never wanted to have a career as a teacher. Her first international job was in Thailand, where she stayed for about six months in a very rural area, not the best first international teaching experience to be honest! So in 2024 she came to China, specifically Shenzhen and everything seemed to fit in perfectly, she even found love during her first semester already! We chat the thrill of leaving home for the first time, the excitement of solo traveling and everything that comes into becoming independent as a human in the world. We also get into some cultural values she admire in this country as well as some she does not relate to as much, specially in the education system. We also get into some of the things she most enjoy about living here, starting by the price of stuff and all the amazing online shopping apps! Jaeda’s warm and outgoing personality surely has transposed into this conversation. This was a great chat about the ups and downs of living abroad and how having an opened mind and positive mindset will guide you in the right direction.   Please share this episode with a friend, and if you haven't done so yet, please subscribe to the podcast on Spotify or Apple Podcast   Follow me:  Instagram: @inbetweenwithvzv LinkedIn: Veronika Z.V.   Guest Media: Instagram: @jaeda.k

Anabela Milakov - “Your mindset changes when you go out”

Meet Anabela, the third Serbian I know after Stevan and Novak Djockovic! Haha She captivated me right away with her positive energy and beautiful smile. Coming from a small town in Serbia, China has definitely been quite the adventure for Anabela. Her first idea of China was when her older sister came to China to work as an Au Pair a few years ago, which gave her the opportunity to come visit the country a few times, opening her eyes to what other possibilities were out there. But it wasn’t until after a phone call with her sister that everything really changed for her. During a rough period in her life, Anabela is presented with the opportunity of coming to China while also attending University online, which was a very clever choice. That allowed her to have new experiences while finishing her studies. She shares her first thoughts about China, how scary that idea was and how it changed over the time being here. Very quickly she realized she needed to step out of her comfort zone and “become one of them” in order to thrive living here! China allowed her to find another version of herself, a stronger and more resilient version that maybe she would have never find out if she didn’t come here. With a great sense of humor and opened heart, Bela tells us about her ongoing love story, how it is taking care of little children in a strange country, and how she really feels about her journey here. Anabela has really grown as a person from this experience and realized that we don’t need to have everything figured out in life to make the best out of it!   Please share this episode with a friend, and if you haven't done so yet, please subscribe to the podcast on Spotify or Apple Podcast     Follow me:  Instagram: @inbetweenwithvzv LinkedIn: Veronika Z.V.   Guest Media: Instagram: @milakova9

Rich Newman– “If you want to change your reality, change your environment.”

Meet Rich, a funny and free spirit guy with one of the most unique and interesting backgrounds I’ve heard. Being born in Guam, a small island that belongs to the United States, his formative years were spent in different places and learning that the world is free for anyone courageous enough to see it. His first international travel was Germany with a German friend he made in school and that opened his vision of possibilities, after that, nothing could stop him. He ended up living in different countries and having lifetime experiences with all kinds of people in all kinds of environments, which all led him to come to China eventually, where he has been for a few months now.   Rich goes on telling me about the epiphany he’s had on his desk job and how that propelled him to go out in the world and explore all it has to offer! We chat different cultures, pandemic crazy stories, beautiful sights and how each place comes with a different color package (you just need to figure out which one it is) ! With good humor and a story telling talent, Rich reminds us that life is more than a job and things will be tough no matter where you are, so we should buy a one way ticket trip, have a positive mindset and figure it out! Maria Margo – “A good morning girl.”

Meet Maria, with an energetic and loving spirit; her chat with me brightened up my day! It was her love for dancing that brought her to China for the first time, but it was her ability to persevere through challenges and trust in herself that kept her here! From dance teacher to English teacher, in the words of Maria “life happens!” Even though she struggled deeply with Mandarin from the start, she did not give up on building a life here. Now after having lived in a few different cities in China, she fell in love with Shenzhen. We chat her current position as a kindergarten teacher, highs and lows of relationships, giving birth in China during pandemic times, and her positive experiences and opinions about the health system in the country for foreigners. Maria also shares about her social media account on “小红书”, the main Chinese social media, and why her simple and yet much needed message was able to attract over 12k followers already! We go ahead on discussing the impacts of social media in different countries and societal expectations, especially on women. This was a very insightful and deep conversation on many important matters, related not only to the life of an expat, but also as a member of society.
