What Amendment 3 Could Mean for Fort Lauderdale

I took a break from the usual interview format for a special Saturday edition of Let’s Talk Lauderdale, because there was a lot happening around Broward that deserved more than a quick scroll-by. We start in Pembroke Pines with a leadership change at Children’s Harbor, where Teresa Kennedy steps in as president and CEO of the organization supporting teens, families, and young adults navigating foster care, trauma, and the road to independence. Then I dig into Florida’s proposed Amendment 3 and what it could really mean for homeowners in Fort Lauderdale and across Broward. Yes, the promise of a bigger homestead exemption sounds good, but there is another side of the conversation: what happens to city services, parks, emergency response, maintenance, and local budgets if municipalities lose a major piece of their property-tax revenue? I also run through some solid Labor Day weekend options, including the Fort Lauderdale Home Show, North Beach festivities near A1A, bacon and barbecue in Margate, a Dolly Parton tribute at Savor Cinema, and more. === Chapters 00:00 Special Saturday local news roundup01:36 Children’s Harbor names Teresa Kennedy as CEO04:07 Amendment 3 and Florida homestead tax changes08:31 What Amendment 3 could mean for Fort Lauderdale services11:06 Fort Lauderdale Home Show at the Convention Center12:58 Labor Day festival at North Beach near A1A14:30 Bacon, Beer, and Barbecue Festival in Margate15:44 Remembering Dolly at Savor Cinema17:04 September 11 Memorial Concert in Hollywood18:07 More Broward arts and culture events === People Mentioned Teresa Kennedy, Children’s Harbor President and CEO: https://www.linkedin.com/in/theresa-kennedy-858312151Tiffani Dhooge, Children’s Harbor former President and CEO: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tiffanidhoogeBen Sorensen, City of Fort Lauderdale Vice Mayor: https://www.fortlauderdale.gov/HomeMalcolm Flavell, James Malcolm Band: https://bio.to/jamesmalcolmbandSylvia Rose Aycock, Broward Women’s Chorus director: https://bwcchoralgroup.org/ === Local Businesses / Organizations / Nonprofits Children’s Harbor: https://childrensharbor.org/Kristi House: https://kristihouse.org/ChildNet: https://www.childnet.us/City of Fort Lauderdale: https://www.fortlauderdale.gov/HomeFort Lauderdale Parks and Recreation Department: https://www.fortlauderdale.gov/Explore-FTLSpotlight FTL: https://spotlightftl.com/My Family Matters Foundation: https://myfamilymattersfoundation.org/Broward Public Library Foundation: https://www.bplfoundation.org/South Florida Chamber Ensemble: https://www.sflcemusic.com/History Fort Lauderdale: https://historyfortlauderdale.org/Broward Women’s Chorus: https://bwcchoralgroup.org/ === Events / Attractions / Venues Fort Lauderdale Home Show: https://www.homeshows.com/Labor Day Festival: https://www.fortlauderdale.gov/Explore-FTL/Event-Calendar/Labor-Day-FestivalDoc Reno’s Bacon, Beer & BBQ Festival: https://docsbaconfest.com/Remembering Dolly at Savor Cinema: https://www.bplfoundation.org/remember-dolly-at-savor-cinemaSeptember 11 Memorial Concert: https://www.sflcemusic.com/Timeless Tropics: Florida’s Changing Landscape: https://historyfortlauderdale.org/archives/8009Tito Puente Jr. & His Orchestra: The Music of Tito Puente: https://www.miniacipac.com/events/detail/tito-puente-jr-2026Rose and Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center: https://www.miniacipac.com/ === Resources / Books / Podcasts / Apps Broward Public Library Foundation children’s book programs: https://www.bplfoundation.org/History Museum Fort Lauderdale: https://historyfortlauderdale.org/South Florida Chamber Ensemble events and programs: https://www.sflcemusic.com/ === MUSIC LICENSE CERTIFICATE Title: Happy Epic And Confident Corporate Background Piece To Suit Health Or DynamicItem ID: 195889930Publisher: Saowakhon BrownComposer: Saowakhon BrownLicense: Individual License, CommercialStock Media provided by TheSaoLady / Pond5

The South Florida Fight Against Hate Starts Early

Roneet Edrich, Executive Director of InSIGHT Through Education, joins me to talk about the work happening in Broward and Palm Beach County schools to teach kindness, acceptance, respect, and the courage to speak up against hate. A former educator with nearly three decades in South Florida, Roneet shares why this mission is personal for her family and why education has to go beyond grades, college, and careers. We talked about InSIGHT’s upcoming traveling 38-foot World War II-era cattle car replica, which will bring local Holocaust survivor testimony, original documents, and a hard but necessary conversation about propaganda, misinformation, and hate online to area students. If you live, work, raise kids, or care about Greater Fort Lauderdale, this is one of those conversations that stays with you. === Chapters 00:17 Meet Roneet Edrich of InSIGHT Through Education01:44 From Special Education Teacher to Nonprofit Leader07:15 How InSIGHT Brings Holocaust Education to South Florida Schools09:19 Inside the Traveling Cattle Car Exhibit11:58 Propaganda, Social Media, AI, and Misinformation13:40 Teaching Students to Recognize and Respond to Hate17:12 Reaching 105,000 Students Across Broward and Palm Beach18:51 Funding the Mission and Expanding the Program23:38 Antisemitism in Florida and Why the Work Matters25:24 Roneet’s Personal Family Connection to the Holocaust27:44 Turning Bystanders Into Upstanders === Guest: Roneet Edrich, InSIGHT Through Education, Executive Director Website: https://www.insightthrougheducation.org/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/roneet-edrich === Local Businesses / Organizations / Nonprofits Junior Achievement of South Florida: https://jasouthflorida.org/Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County: https://jewishboca.org/Anti-Defamation League: https://www.adl.org/Broward County Public Schools: https://www.browardschools.com/School District of Palm Beach County: https://www.palmbeachschools.org/Monroe County School District: https://www.keysschools.com/ === Events / Attractions / Venues The Wharf Fort Lauderdale: https://wharfftl.com/Broward Center for the Performing Arts: https://www.browardcenter.org/Museum of Discovery and Science: https://mods.org/Sunday Jazz Brunch: https://www.parks.fortlauderdale.gov/special-events/special-events/jazz-brunch === Resources / Books / Podcasts / Apps Night, Elie Wiesel: https://amzn.to/4zMusTk === MUSIC LICENSE CERTIFICATE Title: Happy Epic And Confident Corporate Background Piece To Suit Health Or DynamicItem ID: 195889930Publisher: Saowakhon BrownComposer: Saowakhon BrownLicense: Individual License, CommercialStock Media provided by TheSaoLady / Pond5

Shooter’s Waterfront Fire & Lola’s on the Water

I start with one of those stories that gets people’s attention fast: a fire at Shooter’s Waterfront. When smoke is coming out of a place that has been a go-to spot for boaters, brunches, happy hour, sunset drinks, and visiting family, Fort Lauderdale notices. The good news is that the kitchen fire was contained quickly and no one was hurt, but it changed our family dinner plans. I share where we landed instead, Lola’s on the Water in Pompano Beach, and why it might be a solid casual waterfront option when you want food, a drink, and a view without making a whole production out of it. Then I get into the stories with bigger consequences for Broward. A dredging project north of Port Everglades is paused after questions about sediment spreading near staghorn coral and queen conch. The New River water advisory has been lifted after a sewer overflow, but that does not make the bigger infrastructure issue disappear. I also have details on Dine Out Lauderdale, Broward’s 4.6% unemployment rate, an airport job fair with about 300 openings, a pair of theater productions worth knowing about, and a Pre-Labor Day Block Party that gives us one more reason to get out and support local. === Chapters 00:12 Welcome to Lauderdale01:07 Shooter’s Waterfront Fire02:25 Lola’s on the Water05:06 Port Everglades Dredging Pause07:39 New River Advisory Lifted08:54 Dine Out Lauderdale10:34 Broward Jobs Report13:15 FLL Airport Job Fair15:10 Pompano Beach Theater Premiere16:42 Wilton Manors’ *Forbidden!*18:40 Pre-Labor Day Block Party === Resources / Companies / Books / Podcasts Shooter’s Waterfront: https://www.shooterswaterfront.com/[shooterswaterfront]Lola’s on the Water: https://www.lolasonthewater.com/[lolasonthewater]Dine Out Lauderdale: https://www.visitlauderdale.com/dineout/[visitlauderdale]Visit Lauderdale: https://www.visitlauderdale.com/Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance:Waterway Advisory: https://www.fortlauderdale.gov/Residents/City-News/Precautionary-Waterway-Advisory-Lifted-for-the-South-Fork-New-River-and-Crevalle-CanalBroward County Reports 4.6% Unemployment: https://www.gflalliance.org/news/2026/08/24/press-releases/broward-county-reports-a-4.6-unemployment-rate-in-july-2026/Broward County Aviation Department: https://www.broward.org/AirportFort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport Job Fair: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/fort-lauderdale-hollywood-international-fll-airport-job-fair-tickets-1991989421984[eventbrite]Miami Waterkeeper: https://miamiwaterkeeper.org/[linkedin]National Marine Fisheries Service: https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/Pompano Beach Cultural Center: https://www.pompanobeacharts.org/HIVE Black Box Theatre: https://www.pompanobeacharts.org/Brévo Theatre: https://www.brevotheatre.org/School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play: https://www.pompanobeacharts.org/events/school-girls-or-the-african-mean-girls-playPlays of Wilton: https://www.playsofwilton.com/Forbidden!: https://www.tickettailor.com/events/ronnielarsenpresents/2323185Ronnie Larsen Presents: https://www.ronnielarsen.com/Port Everglades: https://www.porteverglades.net/ === MUSIC LICENSE CERTIFICATE Title: Happy Epic And Confident Corporate Background Piece To Suit Health Or DynamicItem ID: 195889930Publisher: Saowakhon BrownComposer: Saowakhon BrownLicense: Individual License, CommercialStock Media provided by TheSaoLady / Pond5

Fort Lauderdale School Cameras Go Live

This week, I start with a homeownership lesson from my own Fort Lauderdale water-meter mess. After the smart meter replacement, debris found its way into faucets, shower heads, and toilet lines, and one little shutoff valve turned into a much bigger headache. I share what I learned, why I decided not to push my luck with an aging valve, and why John the Plumber earned a genuine local recommendation after getting everything flowing again. Then I get into the local changes that may affect your plans this week. Fort Lauderdale City Commission meetings are moving to the new Police Department headquarters, king tides could complicate travel in low-lying areas, and speed cameras are starting around nine local schools. I also talk about possible e-bike rules, Common Room’s arrival in downtown Hollywood, and several Broward events worth adding to your calendar. === Chapters 00:23 Smart Water Meter Fixes04:13 City Hall Changes05:52 Tides And School Cameras08:45 E-Bike Rules Loom10:09 Hollywood’s New Dinner Spot11:41 Weekend Events Roundup14:29 Guinness Records Science Event === Local Businesses / Organizations / Nonprofits John the Plumber: https://johntheplumberfl.com/City Commission meetings are moving to the new police headquarters: https://www.fortlauderdale.gov/Residents/City-News/New-City-Commission-Meeting-LocationFixIt FTL: https://www.fortlauderdale.gov/Government/Departments/Strategic-Communications/FixIt-FTLFort Lauderdale School Zone Safety Program: https://www.fortlauderdale.gov/Government/Departments/Transportation-and-Mobility/Transportation-Division/Programs-Policies-and-Initiatives/School-Zone-Safety-ProgramCommon Room: https://commonroomfl.com/Sunny Stroll Market: https://www.goriverwalk.com/greater-fort-lauderdale-events/sunny-stroll-marketJoseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat: https://www.browardcenter.org/events/detail/after-work-players-2026After Work Players: https://www.browardcenter.org/events/detail/after-work-players-2026Old School Saturdays @ Backyard: https://www.universe.com/events/old-school-saturdays-backyard-tickets-H3ZXC0Backyard Fort Lauderdale: https://www.backyardftl.com/Summer Jamz: https://www.goriverwalk.com/greater-fort-lauderdale-events/summer-jamz-5The Science of Guinness World Records: https://mods.org/exhibit/the-science-of-guinness-world-records/Fort Lauderdale Beach Sweep: https://www.goriverwalk.com/events/greater-fort-lauderdale-event-calendar/page/248?long_events === MUSIC LICENSE CERTIFICATE Title: Happy Epic And Confident Corporate Background Piece To Suit Health Or DynamicItem ID: 195889930Publisher: Saowakhon BrownComposer: Saowakhon BrownLicense: Individual License, CommercialStock Media provided by TheSaoLady / Pond5 This week, I start with a homeownership lesson from my own Fort Lauderdale water-meter mess. Broward’s Housing Decisions Need You

This week, I ask a straightforward local question: when a new development receives public incentives, what should the public expect in return? I look at The Cove project on North Federal Highway, which is bringing hundreds of apartments and workforce units to the area, along with the Bayview Drive project near the Galleria. Both stories show how changes in ownership, approvals, density, commercial space, and parking can directly affect the neighborhoods around them. I also share why Broward Animal Care’s crowded kennels are a community issue, not simply an adoption issue, and why the Broward Housing Council meeting is an opportunity for residents to weigh in before priorities are locked in. Then I shift to some of the good stuff: Dine Out Lauderdale, local music, culture, food, and events that make this place special. Whether you live here, work here, own a business here, or just love Lauderdale, I hope this episode gives you a few reasons to pay attention and get involved. === Chapters 00:23 Host Update and Local Weather02:39 Housing Development and Incentives06:52 Animal Shelter Capacity Crisis08:14 Broward Housing Hearing10:13 Dine Out Lauderdale Events === Local Businesses / Organizations / Nonprofits Affiliated Development: https://affiliateddevelopment.com/The Cove: https://affiliateddevelopment.com/thedune-comingsoon-1Procacci Development Corporation: http://procacci.us/Willow Bridge Property Company: https://www.willowbridgepc.com/Broward County Animal Care: https://www.broward.org/Animal/Pages/default.aspxBroward County Housing Finance Division: https://www.broward.org/Housing/Pages/Default.aspxBroward Housing Council: https://www.broward.org/Housing/Pages/Default.aspx === Events / Attractions / Venues Dine Out Lauderdale: https://www.visitlauderdale.com/dineout/First Fridays at YOLO: https://yolorestaurant.com/Starlight Musicals: https://www.parks.fortlauderdale.gov/special-events/special-events/starlight-musicalsShane Duncan Band: https://shaneduncanband.com/Remake Yourself: Tribute to Incubus and Jane’s Affliction: Tribute to Jane’s Addictionhttps://www.jointherevolution.net/concerts/remake-yourself-tribute-to-incubus-janes-affliction/Association of Indians in America: India Independence Day: https://www.browardcenter.org/events/detail/india-independence-day-2026 === Resources / Books / Podcasts / Apps Florida Live Local Act: https://www.flsenate.gov/Session/Bill/2023/102Broward County Consolidated Plan: https://www.broward.org/Housing/Pages/PlansReports.aspxCommunity Development Block Grant: https://www.hud.gov/program_offices/comm_planning/cdbgHOME Investment Partnerships Program: https://www.hud.gov/program_offices/comm_planning/home === MUSIC LICENSE CERTIFICATE Title: Happy Epic And Confident Corporate Background Piece To Suit Health Or DynamicItem ID: 195889930Publisher: Saowakhon BrownComposer: Saowakhon BrownLicense: Individual License, CommercialStock Media provided by TheSaoLady / Pond5 Website: https://www.letstalklauderdale.com/ Let’s Talk Lauderdale is hosted by Marvin Bee & Jen Stewart. Smart Water Meters In Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale just wrapped a wild World Cup run, even without hosting a single match, and the ripple effects were huge for Broward’s hotels, bars, and neighborhoods. Inter Miami’s Florida Blue Training Center quietly became one of the busiest national team bases on the planet, while watch parties from Sunrise to Hollywood packed arenas and downtown streets with fans repping Colombia, Scotland, and more. If you live or work in Greater Fort Lauderdale, this summer was a preview of how global events can pump millions into local businesses, hospitality, and tourism. We also get closer to home with the smart water meter rollout, because those surprise bills and pressure issues are hitting actual neighbors, not just headlines. I share what happened at my own house, why communication broke down, and the phone numbers you need if your meter swap goes sideways. From a neighborhood bagel stop like Bagels & Co to the stalled 901 North redevelopment in Flagler Village, this conversation stitches together how big plans, small places, and city decisions shape everyday life in Fort Lauderdale. If you care about where Broward is headed, this is the kind of local update that helps you ask better questions, support local spots, and stay plugged in. === Chapters 00:16 Welcome Back to Let's Talk Lauderdale02:07 World Cup Windfall06:03 Smart Meter Growing Pains11:08 Bagels and Local Favorites13:22 Sears Site Redevelopment17:23 Upcoming Events Rundown === Local Businesses / Organizations / Nonprofits Fort Lauderdale Smart Water Meter Program: https://spotlightftl.com/smart-water-meter-programBagels & Co: https://bagelsandco.com/locations/fort-lauderdale-7th-streetOld Searstown (901 North): https://www.rwerealestate.com/2026/04/24/the-redevelopment-of-901-north-federal-highway-_-the-old-sears-town/ === Events / Attractions / Venues NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale Neighbor Day: https://nsuartmuseum.orgYOLO First Fridays: https://yolorestaurant.com/happy-hour-menu/The Chili Poppoers with American Idiots: https://www.jointherevolution.net/concerts/the-chili-poppers-with-american-idiots/Lionel Richie with Earth, Wind & Fire: https://casino.hardrock.com/hollywood/events/lionel-richie-and-earth-wind-and-fireAdam Ray Stand-Up at The Parker: https://www.parkerplayhouse.com/events/detail/adam-ray-2026Visit Lauderdale Events Calendar: https://www.visitlauderdale.com/events === MUSIC LICENSE CERTIFICATE Title: Happy Epic And Confident Corporate Background Piece To Suit Health Or DynamicItem ID: 195889930Publisher: Saowakhon BrownComposer: Saowakhon BrownLicense: Individual License, CommercialStock Media provided by TheSaoLady / Pond5 Website: https://www.letstalklauderdale.com/ Let’s Talk Lauderdale is hosted by Marvin Bee & Jen Stewart. Why Fort Lauderdale Is Booming in 2026

Fort Lauderdale is not the same sleepy beach town you remember, and this week we unpack why it suddenly feels like the city hit fast forward. I walk you through everything from the Florida Air and Sea Show roaring over the coastline to the Great American Beach Party on Las Olas, plus the big economic headline about a Fortune 500 logistics company eyeing a headquarters move to our backyard with 150 high-paying jobs on the table. We get into the nuts and bolts of the projects that will actually change how you move through the city: a controversial new city hall price tag, a fifth terminal at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, and Broward County’s multi-billion-dollar Primo transit network connecting downtown to Miami, the airport, Port Everglades, and more. If you care about traffic, commuting, or where the next business hubs will pop up, this is your roadmap. Then we zoom into the neighborhoods, from the half-billion-dollar Fat Village redevelopment in Flagler Village to luxury living along the Riverwalk with projects like Six and Rio and Astor Park. I round things out with your summer game plan: Caribbean American Heritage Month celebrations, concerts at the War Memorial and Hard Rock, recurring jazz brunches, waterfront markets, trivia nights, art museum evenings, and events in Pompano and beyond that keep the region feeling like one big community. How Children’s Harbor Helps Broward Teens

I had a powerful conversation with Children’s Harbor Chief Development Officer, and Fort Lauderdale local, Vanessa Seltzer about what foster care really looks like in Broward County, far from the postcard beaches most of us picture when we think about South Florida. We talked about the thousands of kids in Florida’s foster care system, the teens who have bounced through 20 different placements before landing at Children’s Harbor’s eight‑acre, family‑style campus in Pembroke Pines and what it means for them to “age out” at 18 with no safety net. Vanessa walked me through how Children’s Harbor runs two campuses, including Browns Harbor’s affordable apartments for 18 to 23 year olds who still get life coaching, mental health support and a boutique where they can pick out furniture and clothes for their first real place. We dug into their family strengthening program that steps into real Broward homes after loss, job changes or trauma to keep kids out of foster care, and we talked about simple ways you and your business can help, from monthly gift card drives and mock interviews to hosting workshops on LinkedIn, taxes, credit and entrepreneurship. We also highlighted the Harbor Social at Palm Garden in East Broward, a June 25 event where your ticket turns directly into mission support so Children’s Harbor can keep kids safe, stable and seen as more than just a statistic.
