How can fruit brands convince more consumers to buy?

With the help of Hannes Tauber of Vog – Home of Apples, The Fresh Ideas Show explores what it takes to build successful fruit brands, and whether the fresh produce business needs to change the way it talks to consumers. Apple shelves have become increasingly crowded with brands, but what are they actually there to achieve? And as more companies compete for shoppers’ attention, how can those brands grow consumption rather than simply take sales from one another? In this episode of The Fresh Ideas Show, the discussion turns to the difficult business of creating a genuine connection between fruit brands and consumers – from communicating flavour, health and provenance more effectively to understanding how much sustained investment a successful consumer brand really requires. There is also a broader challenge for fresh produce. Does the industry need to become better at explaining why people should buy its products in the first place? And what can it learn from brands, both inside and outside fresh produce, that have managed to make themselves meaningful to consumers? This episode is brought to you by Vog – Home of Apples. Is AI ready to fast-track your fruit shipments?

For fresh produce importers handling hundreds of containers a year, keeping track of packing lists, bills of lading, invoices, ETAs and countless emails can consume a huge amount of time. Trackberry founder Edouard Brière believes AI can take much of that work off their hands. In this episode of The Fresh Ideas Show, Brière explains how Trackberry reads shipping documents, extracts and cross-checks key information, follows containers in real time, then feeds the results back into an importer’s existing systems. He also tells Mike Knowles why advances in AI have suddenly made this kind of technology practical, how the system deals with messy and inconsistent documentation, and why its role is less about replacing logistics teams than allowing them to spend their time on more valuable work. Kikokà gears up for major yellow kiwifruit expansion

Kikokà is preparing for a major step up in supply after completing its first centrally managed commercial campaign, with European production forecast to more than double to around 11,000 tonnes next season. In this episode of The Fresh Ideas Show, CEO Fabio Zanesco explains how the yellow kiwifruit project is expanding its footprint across Italy, Greece, France and Spain, while laying the foundations for future counter-seasonal production in the Southern Hemisphere. He also tells Mike Knowles why Kikokà’s model goes further than a traditional fruit ‘club’, how consistency of quality and value underpin its premium positioning, and why he believes the wider kiwifruit category still has considerable room to grow. Bananas on the brink? Professor James Dale has other ideas…

Bananas might be the world’s most popular fruit, but disease, climate pressures, and a lack of genetic diversity mean that Cavendish – the variety most people buy in the shops – faces a serious threat to its future survival. In this episode of The Fresh Ideas Show, Mike Knowles speaks with Professor James Dale, one of the world’s leading banana researchers. He led the recent development of the world’s first genetically modified banana approved for commercial production, and is the author of a new book called The Future of Bananas. James explains why bananas are in fact unlikely to be heading for extinction, despite the alarming headlines. Plus he explores the genuine threats facing Cavendish, considers the potential for a more diverse range of bananas through new techniques like gene editing, and explains why regulators, not scientists, could play a key role in the industry's banana rescue mission. From tropical to typical: Jingold’s avocado advance

Cesena-based company Jingold is aiming to repeat its recent success with branded kiwifruit by introducing Italian consumers to homegrown avocados. So why has one of the world’s leading kiwifruit brands decided to start selling avocados as well? And how big a market share can it achieve as it looks to carve out its own market share alongside Europe’s traditional suppliers? These are among the big questions for Alessandro Fornari, general manager of Italian company Jingold, as he speaks exclusively to Fruitnet’s Mike Knowles ahead of the Fruitnet Tropicals Congress in Barcelona, where Fornari will offer more detail on the future of the avocado category in general.
