They Don't Understand What This Means For The Lakers

Brooklyn declined a team option worth $6.25 million, and a 24-year-old former top-ten pick hit the market for anybody willing to take a swing. The Lakers got Ziaire Williams on one year at three million, and my Pelicans pushed hard and lost him to a hometown zip code, so we can add that to the pile. I go through how a 10th pick out of Stanford ended up here, what Memphis was actually betting on, and why the Cam Reddish comparison is fair even if I think the swing was right both times. Then the defensive numbers, where B-Ball Index has him graded as a genuine passing-lane menace among wing stoppers while the rim protection sits at the bottom of the scale, which is exactly what Walker Kessler is for. The bigger thing is what the roster is turning into. Kessler, Quentin Grimes, Collin Sexton, Williams, Cam Carr, Adou Thiero, and a front office still chasing Jonathan Kuminga and Matisse Thybulle after everybody assumed the Williams deal closed those doors. A team that ranked 22nd in pace last season is now built to run, and it is running without the guy who led the league in fast-break scoring. The Lakers Can't Keep Getting Away With Stuff Like This

The Lakers sat at 25, the Knicks were willing to move 24 for cash, and Los Angeles refused to gamble on Cameron Carr lasting one more pick. I get into why that was the right call, why a Western Conference scout told Brett Siegel the whole thing made no sense, and how a guard who walked out on a number one Tennessee team in the middle of December turned into a first-rounder eighteen months later. Carr led Baylor at nearly 19 a night while shooting 37 percent from three on six attempts a game, and at the combine he measured 6'4.5" barefoot with a wingspan just past 7'0.75" and a 42.5" max vertical that ranked second in the entire class. The tape backs it up, the Summer League reads are already there, and the defensive tools might be what keeps him on the floor for JJ Redick. Then there is the other side of it. Pelinka's last five draft additions before this one were Thiero, Bronny, Knecht, Maxwell Lewis, and Jalen Hood-Schifino, and a team without a tradable first for seven years cannot afford to keep whiffing. The Lakers Have No Idea What They've Done

The Lakers finally got Luka his center, and the bill came due the same day. Two unprotected firsts in 2031 and 2033, swaps in 2028 and 2030, and a four-year, $130 million contract made Walker Kessler the anchor of Los Angeles's next era, and the fallout left the franchise without a tradable first for seven years and roughly $475 million committed to three players. Danny Ainge cashed in on Utah's leverage again, LeBron James walked out the door while the front office chased a big man, and Anthony Davis sat back and laughed at every post about it. I get into why the fit next to Luka is as clean as it looks, what Kessler was doing in Utah on scraps from a young backcourt, and why the debt still makes this whole thing scary. LeBron James Wasn't Messing Around

Austin Reaves agreed to four years and 185 million dollars, the richest deal an undrafted player has ever signed, and the guy it might've cost the most has four rings. The Miami Heat Already Have A Huge Problem

Pat Riley spent four years attached to every star on the market without landing one, and then he landed the biggest one of all. Giannis Antetokounmpo is a member of the Miami Heat. We walk through what it cost: Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakučionis, the No. 13 pick, unprotected firsts in 2031 and 2033, a 2030 swap, and a 2033 second.
