    The Weight Behind The Badge

Gabe spent nearly a decade on patrol, seven years on SWAT, and five years as a sniper with Reno PD before retiring this year. He was trained to stay composed under extreme pressure. What that training didn't prepare him for was what all of it would eventually cost him. In this episode, Gabe shares the story behind the badge: the immense personal struggles he faced in the years following his military service, and the sixteen years of sobriety he's built since. He talks candidly about what recovery actually required, why the culture around asking for help in law enforcement and military life is so slow to change, and how he found his way back to purpose through helping others carry what he once carried alone. Today Gabe runs Precision Resilience, a fitness and firearms training business, and the Resilient Lives Foundation, a nonprofit supporting first responders and veterans through group workouts built around trauma and moral injury. In this episode, he and Jolyn also talk through firearms training and preparedness in a way that's accessible whether or not you've ever considered owning a gun. If you've ever wondered what happens to the people trained to hold everything together for the rest of us, this conversation is for you.   Show Notes: Website: precision-resilience.com Nonprofit: https://www.resilientlivesfoundation.org/ Socials: IG: https://www.instagram.com/precision_resilience TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@precision.resilience

The Long Goodbye: A Real Guide to Loving Someone Through Dementia

Dementia touches more families than almost any other condition — and yet most of us don't know what to do until we're already in the middle of it. In this episode, Jolyn sits down with Kathy Ovenstone of Help at Home Senior Care for an honest, deeply practical conversation about caring for someone you love through cognitive decline. Kathy's work in senior care began when she was a teenager helping care for her grandmother with Alzheimer's, and decades later — after a career in healthcare operations — she now spends her days walking families through exactly the moments most of us are quietly dreading. Together, Jolyn and Kathy talk about the conversations families keep avoiding, why hiding cognitive decline costs more than acknowledging it, when it's time to take the keys away, and the surprising reframes — like "therapeutic lying" and "meeting them where they are" — that make this season more bearable for everyone. If you've ever watched a loved one start to slip, or quietly wondered whether someone you care about is showing early signs, this conversation is for you.
