Dreams as a Practice in Art: How Dreams and Art Both Awaken Your Soul to Jesus

Send us Fan Mail AI can already outsmart us on the Bible, on exegesis, on historical and archaeological findings, on nearly every methodology you could name. But there is one thing it cannot do, and it may be the thing that matters most. AI cannot dream. Today, in the final episode of the season, we talk about why that matters and what to do about it. This is week ten of our ten-week series on the dreaming life, and it closes the arc somewhere I did not expect to land. About a year ago I was studying Carl Jung's mandalas when the Lord told me to stop writing my dreams down and start illustrating them instead. I was not thrilled. I share the objections I had, which are probably the same ones you have, and what I discovered underneath all of them: that writing a dream down is already translating it out of the language it arrived in, and translation always loses something. We look at why God chooses symbols in Scripture, in parables, and in dreams, precisely because symbols are not fixed and cannot be reduced to a single meaning. We look at Carl Jung, who worked in watercolor, oil, calligraphy, stone, and architecture, and who never considered himself an artist, only someone who needed art to understand his soul. We visit Bollingen, the tower on Lake Zurich where Jung started building a castle out of materials on the ground and found meaning surfacing in places he never expected. And we talk about why play matters for anyone trying to disconnect from the rational world long enough to hear God. If you have been following this series, thank you for walking the whole ten weeks. Becoming God's Clay: Interpreting Dreams as a Way for God to Shape your Soul

Send us Fan Mail I once had a dream that took fifteen years to interpret and twenty years to come true. I knew the moment I woke that it mattered. I took it to every trusted counselor I had, and not one interpretation ever rang true. Today, on episode 19 of the season, we finally arrive at interpretation. This episode is week nine of our ten-week series on the dreaming life, and it explains something you may have noticed: I built the entire foundation of dream interpretation before I ever taught interpretation itself. That was deliberate. After 25 years of teaching this, I've learned that interpretation is the last step of the process, because at its most basic level it is not something you do. It is something the Holy Spirit does with you, building on the foundation you've laid. I tell the story of the dream I couldn't crack, the semi-truck crashing in the road in front of me, and how it finally opened only when the events of the world caught up to it. We look at John 14:26 and how the Holy Spirit partners with us in remembering and illuminating, at Habakkuk 2 and the revelation that awaits an appointed time, and at the four passages where Scripture calls us clay and God the potter: Isaiah 64:8, Jeremiah 18, Isaiah 45:9, and Job 10:9. We also look at Carl Jung's Psychology and Religion, where he used the dreams of atheist patients at Yale in 1937 to show that even they were being formed at night. If you've been carrying a dream you've never been able to interpret, this episode may reframe the whole experience for you. Post-Dream Formation: Continuing the Conversation From a Dream

Send us Fan Mail What do you actually do after a dream ends? Most of us write it in a journal, or worse, let it float away with our morning coffee. Today we talk about what happens next, the three-step sequence that turns a single dream image into months of real spiritual formation. This episode continues our ten-week series on the dreaming life by walking through nepsis, the Desert Fathers' practice of paying attention, synchronicity, Carl Jung's term for meaningful coincidence developed alongside physicist Wolfgang Pauli, and active imagination, modeled by the prophet Habakkuk stationing himself on the ramparts to hear what God would say. I tell the story of a giraffe that followed me everywhere, in decor, in the news, in random conversations, for weeks, until I finally stopped and asked God what it meant, and the season of leadership formation that followed. We talk about why this matters even if you rarely dream, since nepsis works just as well on your waking life. We look at Biblical examples of active imagination in Abraham, Ezekiel, and Jeremiah, and we close with a prayer from the twelfth-century mystic Richard of St. Victor and a practical way to start noticing what God has already been saying to you. If you've ever had a dream, a number, or a symbol that kept following you and you didn't know what to do with it, this episode gives you an actual sequence to work with. The Nightmare or the Dark Dream: Does the Soul Send What Frightens You?

Send us Fan Mail Is every nightmare an attack from the enemy? Or could God actually be the one speaking through the dream that terrifies you? Today we tackle one of the hardest and most misunderstood categories in the dreaming life: the nightmare. This episode continues our ten-week series on the dreaming life by looking honestly at where nightmares come from and how to tell the difference. I share my own story of night terrors starting at age three, twenty years of fear at night, and the deliverance prayer that finally broke the pattern. I also share a nightmare I had ten years later, one that terrified me into thinking I'd lost my deliverance, and what it actually took me a full five-year season to understand it had been warning me about all along. We look at Scripture's own scary dreams, Daniel's vision that made him sick for three days, and Job's testimony that God scared him with dreams and terrified him with visions. We talk about the discernment test that actually matters, not how afraid a dream makes you, but what fruit it leaves in your soul. And we close with a prayer from St. Augustine and a practical next step for any dream you're not sure how to hold. If you've ever been afraid of sleep, or you're carrying a nightmare you've never told anyone about, this episode gives you a way to bring it to God instead of just trying to forget it. When Dreams or Symbols Reappear: Dreams as a Pattern of Soul Work

Send us Fan Mail You keep having the same dream. Or the same number keeps showing up on your clock. Or the same street sign keeps appearing in three different places in one week. It's not an angel number, and it's not there to freak you out. Today we talk about why God repeats Himself, patiently, until we finally say yes to the conversation He's trying to have with us. This episode continues our ten-week series on the dreaming life by looking at repeating patterns, both in our dream life and our waking life. I share a dream I still have after 25 years, an exam I never studied for, and the real, somatic anxiety it gives me every single time. We look at why the exam dream is one of the most common recurring dreams in human experience, what Carl Jung discovered about reoccurring dreams in his own clinical work, and how King Nebuchadnezzar's dream in Daniel 2 shows the same pattern playing out three thousand years earlier. We talk about why these dreams give us a real bodily response, and why that response is not something to dismiss but something to take as seriously as a physical symptom. The dream is the hospital of your soul. We anchor the whole conversation in Psalm 77:6 and a prayer from the Celtic saint Columba, and we close with a practical next step you can use starting tonight. The Cast of Your Dream on the Stage of Your Life: How Your Dreams Can Teach You To Pray Effectively

Send us Fan Mail A frightening figure in your dream is not what you think it is. Neither is the stranger you can't place, the ex from twenty years ago, or the beautiful radiant stranger. Today we discover that only about one percent of the time does a figure in a dream actually represent themselves. The rest of the time, they're carrying something else entirely. This episode continues our ten-week series on the dreaming life by looking at the cast of people who show up in our dreams and what they're actually there to tell us. We talk about Carl Jung's concept of projection, the way dream figures become containers for feelings, seasons, and soul wounds we haven't fully faced, and we walk through Jacob's all-night wrestling match at the Jabbok in Genesis 32, where he refused to let go until he received a blessing. I share a story I don't often tell publicly: nearly two decades of recurring dreams about an ex-boyfriend, well into the first years of my happy marriage, and what I finally understood those dreams were actually about once I stopped praying generic prayers and started asking God to do soul-level work. We walk through a simple three-word practice for working with your own recurring dream figures, anchored in Proverbs 3:5 and 1 John 4:18. If a certain person keeps showing up in your dreams and you don't know why, this episode gives you a way to actually find out, and a way to pray about it that might finally get to the root. The Vocabulary of Dreams: Signs and Symbols as God's First Language

Send us Fan Mail If God speaks through dreams, what language is He actually speaking? Not English, not just Hebrew. Signs and symbols, the same language the prophets received, chosen on purpose because it bypasses the intellect we have learned to lean on far too heavily. This episode continues our ten-week series on the dreaming life by looking at why God's first language in Scripture has always been image rather than statement. We talk about what we've lost by trading the numinous for the explainable, what theologian Rudolf Otto called the mysterium tremendum et fascinans, and what Carl Jung called numinosity when he borrowed the term to describe the psyche's own religious function. I share a dream I don't often talk about publicly: walking a moonlit dock, watching an eye larger than a whale's rise out of the water, and realizing in the last second before it submerged that I was looking at the Ancient of Days. We look at Jung's distinction between sign and symbol, how Daniel and Ezekiel used symbol rather than statement to describe God, and why apophatic theology and Psalm 139 both name the same holy limit: some knowledge is too wonderful, too lofty to attain by intellect alone. If you've ever had a dream you couldn't explain and didn't know what to do with, this episode makes the case that the not-knowing might be the point. The Sleeping Self: Why God Speaks When You Are Unconscious

Send us Fan Mail Why does God speak through dreams specifically? What is it about the unconscious state that makes it a particular channel of divine communication? In Week 2 of The Christian Jung's Dreams Arc, Angela Meer explores the theology of the sleeping self. Drawing on Job 33:14-16 ('when deep sleep falls on men, he opens the ears'), Psalm 127:2, and Jung's concept of the compensatory dream, this episode argues that the sleeping state is not a spiritual vacancy -- it is one of the soul's most open moments. Angela shares a deeply personal story: the season she was building ministry hot and fast, with all the visible metrics of success pointing upward, and the dream she calls The Dream that stopped everything. The Dream named what her waking self had been successfully filtering out: the difference between impact and transformation, between transformation and fruit -- and the uncomfortable truth that she was building a ministry at the altar of her ego. She didn't want to receive it. She went to counselors trying to find a way out. Until the dream kept replaying and she finally had to admit what it was saying. This episode covers: -- The filter: how the managing, performing conscious self decides what to let in and what to keep out -- Job 33 and the structure of God's speech through the sleeping state -- Jung's compensatory function: the dream responds specifically to what the waking life has excluded -- Why the sleeping self is, in some ways, the more honest self -- How to begin recognizing the compensatory pattern in your own dream life Scripture covered: Job 33:14-16, Psalm 127:2, Psalm 4:4 Find the full written article and the Inner Room companion on Substack.
