It started, as these things often do, with a post on the internet. A conversation about children, photographs, AI, privacy, and who gets to decide what happens to someone's image opened a much bigger rabbit hole: What do we actually control? Parents don't own their children—but they make decisions for them. Children have autonomy—but developing humans can't always give meaningful informed consent. We can protect privacy—but we can't guarantee it. We can establish boundaries—but boundaries don't determine other people's behavior. So where does stewardship end and ownership begin? What's the difference between protecting something and controlling it? And if we can't guarantee an outcome, does that make our choices meaningless? Autism. ADHD. Trauma. Attachment. Nervous-system dysregulation. Childhood. Culture. Personality types. Astrology. Whatever lens suddenly makes some previously confusing piece of ourselves click into place. And sometimes that lens is life-changing. But when does “this helps explain something about me” quietly become “this explains everything about me”? In Bonus Snack 114, Gin follows a rabbit hole that began with an adult autism narrative and quickly became something much bigger: our tendency to mistake recognition for diagnosis, correlation for causation, and one useful framework for sole authorship of an entire human life. But was another action merely possible, or was it meaningfully available? In this Table Talk, Gin pulls apart six concepts we routinely collapse into one another: causation, responsibility, agency, capacity, choice, and consequence—and asks what happens when families, schools, workplaces, healthcare systems, bureaucracies, and other institutions are built around an incomplete understanding of how human beings actually function. Because knowing better doesn’t automatically create the capacity to do better. Having agency doesn’t mean having absolute control. Accepting responsibility doesn’t mean accepting blame. And an option existing somewhere in the universe doesn’t necessarily mean a person meaningfully possesses that option. This isn’t an argument against accountability.
