    The Patriarchs — Striving (Genesis 27)

    This week's sermon focuses on the life of Jacob, the "flawed and failing patriarch" known as a schemer and deceiver. Hanging on the four "D's"—Dysfunction, Deceit, Declaration, and Despair—the message traces Jacob's journey from a family rife with favouritism and manipulation, where he and his mother Rebekah colluded to steal the blessing from Isaac and Esau, to his eventual encounter with God. Despite sowing deceit and reaping it in his own life (notably through Laban), Jacob is pursued by the faithful God of the covenant, who meets him in his despair. The turning point arrives at the Jabbok River (Genesis 32), where a terrified Jacob wrestles with God, is wounded to be humbled, and receives a new name, Israel. Ultimately, God does not move us into tomorrow's blessing until He helps us deal with yesterday's failings.

    Continuing the series on the Patriarchs, this sermon explores the life of Isaac in Genesis 26, examining the tension between biological inheritance and spiritual identity. Just as a child physically resembles their parents, Isaac echoed Abraham’s narrative—facing famine and revealing the same root fears—illustrating that "flesh gives birth to flesh" and we cannot escape our inherited nature by simply changing our circumstances. However, a parallel narrative of grace runs alongside this dysfunction: "Spirit gives birth to Spirit." Using the imagery of a seed, we see that while the outward "husk" of human failure persists and eventually falls away, God faithfully preserves the "seed" of His promise within us. Ultimately, our true identity is not defined by the repeating patterns of our past or outward appearances, but by the living word of God that claims us as His children, securing a hope that outlasts our fears.

The core message emphasises that God's promises are not cooperative endeavours but are entirely on Him to accomplish, often in impossible circumstances, leading to a miraculous and uncontainable joy—a "laughter" that triumphs over decades of unfulfilled desires and even death itself. Ultimately, listeners are encouraged to find strength and an "inexpressible and glorious joy" in God's promises through Christ, recognising that true resolution and an eternal inheritance are found solely in Him, despite current trials.
