    The Story of Cheryl Grimmer

*WARNING* This episode covers the abduction and murder of a child, extra care must be taken prior to listening. It was the 1970's when The Grimmer family decided to spend a hot Australian's summer day on Fairy Meadow beach but what started with sandcastles and splashing in the sea, ended with he disappearance of the a three year old girl. The Grimmer family had not long moved to Australia from the UK due to dad, Vince, being in the army. Mum, Carole and her four children, Ricky, Stephen, Paul and Cheryl had decided to spend the hot day on the beach, when the weather suddenly took a dramatic turn, Carole started to tidy up their belongings whilst the children when the shower block to clean up, but when cheeky three year old Cheryl refused to come out of the woman's showers, older brother Ricky went to fetch Carole, when they returned to the changing rooms - Cheryl was gone. Being the 70's police only had witness statements to go on, until 18 months later when a 17 year old boy voluntarily went to police with information on Cheryl's disappearance - but it wasn't just information he had...he also had a confession. This week, I cover why 55 years after that confession there still hasn't been any charges brought against anyone in connection with Cheryl's abduction and murder. 60 Minutes Australia If you have a story in mind that you would like featured, please email sslpod.kd@gmail.com, you can also find me on instagram and TikTok If you would like to sponsor the podcast, you can do so via buymeacoffee Hosted on Acast. The Unsolved Ciphers of Ricky McCormick

On the 30th June 1999, a badly decomposed body was found in a corn field in Missouri, through finger prints police were able to confirm it was the body of 41 year old Ricky McCormick, although there was a small suspicion that he had been murdered, due to the decomposition and the wobbly timeline around his date of death, the case fell cold. To start with, Ricky's case wasn't well known, it got a small mention in a local newspaper - his family were told that no clues had been found in connection to his death, but behind the scenes police had found something, two handwritten notes that appeared to be in code or a cipher. They handed them to the FBI who spent 12 years trying to crack the cipher in hopes it would give the answers around Ricky's potential murder, when they failed to crack they code, they made the notes public in March 2011 and suddenly, Ricky's death was thrown into the spotlight, amateur codebreakers around the world took the chance to beat the FBI to cracking the notes left - but to this day they have never been solved. But, were they ever meant to be solved? Are they even a cipher at all? To view copies of the notes left, head over to my instagram. The autopsy that followed found that Ellen had 20 stabs wounds to her body, including 10 to back of her head and neck, with the final blow appearing to be to her heart, the first autopsy confirmed homicide as the cause of death - medical professionals over the years have stated that the areas stabbed to her neck would've left her incapacitated however, despite this, her cause of death was later ruled as suicide. Nearly 15 years later, and with multiple reviews of the case - the cause of death has remained the same, but with police failings meaning that the apartment was search following crime scene clean up, and failing to obtain statements, could Ellen's death really be murder? This weeks episode tells the initial story Ellen's truly harrowing tale, and the covers what has been learnt in the 15 years that followed.
