Ep. 68 - Hitmen, History, and the Movies We Preserve

What do assassin movies reveal about violence, morality, and the societies that create them? In this episode of Couch Critics, Josh and Dave take a wide-ranging look at hitman cinema, from the minimalist cool of Le Samouraï to the chaotic momentum of Bullet Train and the grim intensity of The Yellow Sea. The conversation explores how assassin films have evolved across different eras, the storytelling techniques that make them compelling, and the uneasy cultural questions hiding beneath the action. They also discuss recent trailers, independent films, streaming’s impact on movie availability, and the importance of seeing classic cinema in a theater whenever possible. Along the way, Josh and Dave share personal updates, talk about directors including Robert Wise and Akira Kurosawa, revisit favorite films, and celebrate the rare experience of watching silent movies accompanied by a live orchestra. They also consider film preservation, lost movies, and why access to cinematic history matters. Ep. 67 - From Hitchcock to CGI

What do classic noir, spy thrillers, Jackie Chan, Jared Hess, and digital effects have in common? They’re all part of this wide-ranging Couch Critics conversation about how movies are made, how genres evolve, and why certain films stick with us. Along the way, we dig into the filmmaking choices behind Napoleon Dynamite, Iron Eagle, Cannonball Run, Rad, and Rogue One, including the challenges of dubbing, action choreography, digital resurrection, and the much-debated effects of MTV-style editing. We also revisit classic cinema with Scarlet Street, explore the Wachowskis’ debut Bound, and talk about how editing, pacing, and storytelling shape the movies we love. It’s a lively mix of spy-movie history, cult favorites, filmmaking craft, and personal recommendations.
