Luke 2:8-14 — Glory to God in the Highest

In this Christ-centered homily on Luke 2:8–14 given by Bro. Amal David, we are drawn into the quiet fields of Bethlehem where God chose to reveal His glory—not to kings or rulers, but to humble shepherds faithfully carrying out their daily work. This message challenges our common assumptions about work, worship, and devotion, reminding us that ordinary callings are not obstacles to God’s presence but often the very places where His glory is made known. Engaging with the rich theological insights of the Reformed confessions—the Belgic Confession, Heidelberg Catechism, Canons of Dort, and Westminster Confession—this homily explores the profound meaning of the angelic proclamation: “Glory to God in the highest.” What is the glory of God? Can it be increased or diminished? And what does Christ’s incarnation reveal about God’s eternal, unchanging majesty? From the manger to the cross, we see how the fullness of God’s glory is most vividly revealed in Jesus Christ—the radiance of the Father’s glory, veiled in humility, yet complete in His divine essence. This message also points us to the glory of salvation: the glory Christ secures for His people through redemption, resurrection, and restored communion with God. A reflective and pastoral call marks the close of this homily, urging believers to embrace a quiet, faithful Christian life—especially during the noise and distraction of Christmas—and to glorify God in ordinary obedience, heartfelt worship, and grateful awe for the salvation given to us in Christ Jesus our Lord. “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men.”
