    Biblical Citizenship Beyond Voting

    Voting matters, but biblical citizenship cannot be reduced to one decision every two years. Christians must understand their communities, evaluate candidates through a biblical worldview and hold elected leaders accountable after the election is over. Troy Miller, president and CEO of National Religious Broadcasters, joins me to discuss faith, politics and Christian responsibility in the public square. We examine the danger of allowing political loyalties to shape our reading of Scripture instead of allowing Scripture to correct our politics. We also discuss local elections, Christian media, pastoral courage and the contested language of Christian nationalism. Christians should neither idolize political power nor abandon the institutions that affect their neighbors.     Abortion and the Midterms

    Abortion could again shape the outcome of the midterm elections, but voters need more than political labels. They need to know what candidates believe, what limits they support and what laws they would attempt to enact. Kelsey Pritchard, communications director for SBA Pro-Life America, joins me to discuss the organization's election research and its argument that direct abortion messaging can move competitive races. We examine the Women's Health Protection Act, state laws governing abortion later in pregnancy and the importance of asking candidates specific questions. We also discuss medication abortion, federal born-alive legislation and why some Republican candidates retreat from the issue.     Building a Pro-Life Safety Net

    What happens after a woman chooses life but still faces the housing, financial, relational and child care problems that made abortion appear to be her only option? Autumn Christensen joins Peter Demos to explain how Her PLAN connects local organizations into a coordinated network of support for mothers and babies. Autumn is the executive director of Her PLAN, which works with pregnancy centers, churches, shelters, food pantries, counselors, businesses and other community organizations. The goal is not to make one ministry solve every problem. It is to help communities identify existing resources and fill the remaining gaps. Peter and Autumn also discuss sexual risk avoidance, the responsibilities of men and why churches must become places where pregnant women expect truth, forgiveness and practical help. Support may include housing, transportation, legal assistance, job preparation, mental health care or child care.     Letting Scripture Change You

    Reading the Bible is not the same as understanding it, and understanding biblical information is not the same as being transformed by God's truth. Author and Bible teacher Tim Mulgrew joins Peter Demos to discuss how Christians can move beyond passive reading and encounter Scripture as God's guide for daily life. Tim is the founder of Enjoy Scripture and the author of "The Book of Us: Discovering Ourselves in the Story of the Bible," "John: Reaching Through Time to Guide Us Today" and "Christian, A Contract with God: Understanding the Terms of True Salvation." Peter and Tim examine why Bible reading plans can become checklists, why difficult passages deserve patient attention and why context must govern personal application.     Arrested for Silent Prayer

    Can someone be treated as a criminal because her silent thoughts are directed toward God? Recorded in London, this episode features Isabel Vaughan-Spruce, a Christian pro-life advocate who was arrested after acknowledging that she might be praying internally inside an abortion clinic buffer zone. Isabel tells Peter about how her work outside abortion facilities began, why she continued after facing hostility and what happened when police questioned her about an internal prayer. She discusses her acquittal, a second investigation that ended without further action and the settlement she later received from police. The conversation also addresses Britain's national 150-meter safe access zones, the importance of physical presence in Christian witness and the difference between courage and certainty. Isabel argues that Christians should not wait until they feel fearless. They should trust God to provide the grace needed when obedience becomes costly. Since this interview, Isabel has pleaded not guilty to five charges under the national safe access zone law.     Trump and the Politics of Prayer

    Why did prominent Christian leaders support Donald Trump, and how did their theology influence that relationship? J. Derrick Lemons joins Peter Demos to examine Trump's faith advisory team, the policies that strengthened evangelical support and the spiritual framework through which some advisers interpreted political events. Derrick is a professor and head of the Department of Religion at the University of Georgia. He directs the Center for Theologically Engaged Anthropology and co-authored "Trump and the Politics of Prayer: Inside the Spiritual World of His Faith Advisory Team" with Amos Yong. This conversation does not attempt to determine Trump's personal standing before God. It examines how his religious advisers understood his leadership, why they valued his policy commitments and how comparisons with biblical rulers such as Cyrus and Jehu entered Christian political discussion. Peter and Derrick also discuss prophecy and truth after the 2020 election, the danger of treating a political leader as a messianic figure and the need to humanize political opponents.     How to Think Like Jesus With George Barna

    A biblical worldview is more than a collection of Christian beliefs. It is a way of understanding reality that governs our decisions, priorities and behavior. George Barna joins Peter Demos to explain the seven cornerstones that help Christians think and live like Jesus. George is the director of research and co-founder of the Cultural Research Center at Arizona Christian University.
